You mentioned the red doors on the church and this is what I found...symbolizes the sacrificial blood of Christ that saves those who come to him. Red is also a reminder of the Passover and a sign of the Holy Spirit. Church doors began to be painted red as a way of remembering the ultimate sacrifice that others had made for their faith. the sacrificial blood of Christ that saves those who come to him. Rural retreat is just abouu as good as it gets! Vacationed there and will again. Great story about the photographer OW Link and that lutheran church AND A TRAIN ON CHRISTMAS EVE! Look it up!!!
The Dr. Pepper and Rural Retreat myth is just that. Whomever made it up certainly didn't apply any facts to the story. Dr. Charles Pepper had nothing to do with it, or the men who invented it. "Dr. Pepper" was invented by a druggist in Waco, Texas, who happened to be an employee of pharmacy owner Wade Morrison. Since the concoction was a product of his drug company, Morrison had the honor of naming the drink. Morrison was originally from Christiansburg, VA, and had clerked in a drugstore there as a youth. Morrison's mentor there would have been Dr. William Alexander Reed Pepper (older brother of Dr. Charles Pepper), and practiced in Montgomery County his entire adult life. Young Morrison had 'kept company' with Dr. WAR Pepper's daughter, Millie, until Morrison's family moved to Texas in 1872. Dr. Charles Pepper began his practice of medicine in 1858, first in Pulaski County, then Giles and Washington Counties, and did a stint as a Surgeon in the Confederate Army, then around 1872, he moved to Rural Retreat. Dr. Charles didn't even open up his Rural Retreat store until 2 years after Morrison had left the state, so Morrison definitely never worked for him. Dr. Charles Pepper's only daughter wasn't born until 1874, 2 years after Morrison left the state, so Morrison certainly never dated her.
My daddys people were from Troutdale. Daddy bought a place in Sugar Grove. An Aunt & Uncle lived out the street across from the Marathon. Grandaddy & daddy always said Dr. Pepper was created in Rural Retreat, then the Pharmacist moved to TX.
Thanking you for sharing your trip to Rural Retreat . Very interesting and you both picked the perfect sunny day for your trip . I have just ordered your book on Amazon which i am looking forward to reading soon . Greetings to everyone from Derbyshire, England.

Mother looking especially gorgeous in this video 👀✨️.. and this video is so cozy. I always felt like virginia is more open with mountains while WV is more claustrophobic with their mountains and trees.. (at least for me)
Congratulations on your book! How do I go about getting a signed copy through you? Thanks for sharing this little town and Dr Pepper history. Dr Pepper is my favorite drink.
There are two books by Roger Klutz, on the history of Wythe County. I seem to remember him covering in some detail the history of Dr. Pepper, and the beverage.
It's always a pleasure learning about new places with you. Congratulations on the new book! I look forward to getting it soon. Have an awesome and blessed week. 💜
I guess I'll have to get your book now to hear your story about Dr. Pepper. I remember the old drug store in Rural Retreat that had the "home of Dr. Pepper" sign on it. I was told it burned down many years ago. My knowledge of the story was the pharmacist, Dr. Pepper worked (or perhaps owned) the local drug store and the drink (not developed in VA) was named after him because of a family connection or something like that.

Those are Canada Geese. They won’t move off-they are not too scared of anything. Up in Canada we lovingly call them a ‘cobra goose’😅
...you missed the best part: 'Thrill Hill'...
Your book is 58pp. That is poetic, since it is about SW Va. US Rte 58. 😉
Will you publish your book signing schedule?

Fun fact.
Dr Pepper is spelled that way because the abbreviation "Dr." could not be trademarked.or copywrited.
Just drove past there yesterday on my way back from Dante. Beautiful place.
Drying clothes on the line takes a little bit more effort but the way they smell can't be beat

DrPepper first started at a pharmacy in Waco TX by an actual doctor.
That’s one theory! Like we said, there’s some dispute there and the full story is in our book! - Melody
Dr Charles T Pepper is buried in our local Cemetery and the drink started here.
I'm so glad y'all made a video of this beautiful town! My stepfather was born and raised here and they are some of the sweetest folks you could meet ❤

Well to be fair, Texicans think they did it all. We all know that is just bias thinking. ;-)
Klockner pentaplast! My dad serviced the alarms at Klockner. Haven't heard that company for nigh on 20 years now since my dad passed.
