Kraftwerk is pretty much a text book example of how to make minimalist music. Autobahn has about 8 lines of lyrics, and rarely gets more than two-notes' worth of polyphony, and yet it remains interesting for 22 minutes, through excellent variety in its limitations, and masterful usage of soundscapes, all of that making it a landmark in musical simplicity. To make a long story short, it's simple, but it's also varied and know how to switch it up.
The thing about HAA is that the repetitiveness evolves and changes in your head, more than anything. Human After All, Emotion and Make Love are definitely three of their best tracks. These 3 long loop tracks do it more for you than songs like Digital Love, Too Long or Within? IMO picking the 3 worst tracks from DP is easier to do than picking the 3 best. You may have picked 2 of worst as your best.
@@gregtufaro8166 I didn't say these tracks were top three DP songs, I said that those three tracks were among the best in their discography (around the top 25 or so). Human After All is one of my personally favorite albums by Daft Punk. From beginning to end. I know that it's not the BEST, but it is incredible. The disco and pop mix was there, added with the punk rock makes the album feel more realistic. When I listen to it I feel that I'm actually listening to it live. Alive 2007 added SO MUCH to Human After all, yet the original album is so great. The fact that they took almost little time makes it feel even more like how they originally intended (from what I have seen) the album's theme to feel like: artificial. As you said, this album shows the darker side of Technology and it replicates that perfectly with a huge mess of repeating nonsense and noise. It adds to the creepiness, the robotic feel Daft Punk has as a whole, and the artificial vibe I get from listening to the album, it is perfectly created in every way. And just one more thing, On/Off is the perfect song for transition. Plus it adds on the album a "OoOoOhHhHhH sPoOkY rObOt TaKe OvEr" and I just find it amazing.
I actually think that this album is somewhat revolutionary just by judging the effectiveness of the sound. IMO I think it inspired sebastiAn and Justice heavy.
Human After All is one of my favorite daft punk albums. It’s very sonically heavy and the songs almost engulf you with their sound. It’s very reminiscent of heavy/doom/stoner metal. Like the ending of Brainwasher and H.A.A. I really liked this album. I’m 3:47 seconds into this video and learning that they basically came up with it in 2 weeks makes me like it even more :) thanks for the video
As for some metal references check out: Dopesmoker by Sleep, Funeralopolis by Electric Wizard and some of their other stuff I guess haha. You can hear the heavy chords and slow progression vibes.
This is by far my favourite daft punk album. I can't listen to one song without listening to whole album. I got an original vinyl copy of the album and I'm so happy with it. I love this album so much
I personally love this album. Yes I do agree that it is simple and sometimes blatantly lazy, but it’s strange, unique sound is what makes me come back time and time again. It also includes some literal bangers like HAA and Prime Time Of Your Life.
I was about to turn 16 when Human After All came out although I don't consider it their best work it is my favorite album of theirs, Thomas Bangalter once said about the album it was made to make you feel unsettled and I loved that, Daft Punk's aesthetic back then, the music, the videos, the mystery it was so captivating to me. I remember playing this at a DJ gig for a friend's birthday and everyone hated it. My favorite Daft Punk memories come from that era. One thing to note is that at the time of the album's recording both French men were going through some difficult stuff in their lives.
My issue with Human After All is that, for the first time, Daft Punk was not ahead of the game. All of their previous albums were gauntlets of the future, with a level of passion and expertise that would electrify the minds of music lovers around the world, showing us the potential of what music can and should be. Human is the opposite of this. The album comes across as inherently lazy and uninspirational. It does not sound like music of the future, rather, something you'd expect from 2005. Gone are the intricacies and techniques that set DP music apart from the rest, instead revealing the cheap, repetitive beats the band is built from that they don't want you to see. Homework and Discovery mask the repetition, while Human embraces it in the wrong way. But, then again, that was the point. When asked about the shocking minimalist nature of HAA, Thomas replied, "The album speaks for itself". It was intentional that their music be uncomfortable and unremarkable. Daft Punk certainly had the capabilities to make a smash-hit album, but chose not too. After listening to Human After All Remixes and Alive 2007, I realized it's not the specific sound of Human that's to blame. Two of their best albums were directly inspired by Human, but the difference is that they took that harsh, dystopian, technorock sound and ran with it. HAAR keeps the nitty gritty tone of HAA, while applying the level of effort we expect from DP. It was truly the album we should have gotten in the first place - an album that amazingly combines the feeling of distrust and the urge to dance in a hypnotic, juxtaposing way - an album I'd say is better than all but the Alive concerts. If Daft Club is the gold standard for a remix album, then Human After All Remixes is the platinum bar that manages for every track to sound so distinct yet so identical at the same time. It's practically mesmerizing. Alive 2007 integrated Human's harsh rock vibes into their previous catalogue, giving their older songs the necessary oomph a live concert of that magnitude required. Going back to the original Human; is it a bad album? No it's not. By normal musician standards, HAA is a great album, but by Daft Punk standards it is certainly lacking. I actually listen to HAA more often than Discovery, as I find its simple yet earworm qualities to be perfect for studying. I love a lot of the tracks on it, with Brainwasher taking the cake. Nonetheless, Human After All is still a polarizing album and always will be. It is not for your average, faint-of-mind music listener. It requires a more refined taste than something like Discovery, but that is not a bad thing at all. In my opinion, Human is the bridge between old Daft Punk and new Daft Punk. It was a necessary step in their music evolution that defined their connection to technology and isolation. It was them stretching their signature sound as far as it could reach, and seeing just how far their audience was willing to meet them halfway. Afterwards, the duo still stuck to their unconventional and unpredictable means, making the music they wanted to, but now with the understanding that it might not be universally beloved or understood.
Great video as always! When Robot Rock was first debuted I was initially like WTF! But was quickly on board for this sound and really enjoyed HAA on release (growing up I was more into industrial and darker music, and I was actually excited that it wasn't Discovery Part II because I like when artists don't get comfortable, for better or for worse). But I appreciate that for the bangers on there it's not a super palatable album experience - I definitely have to be in the mood to listen to it from start to finish. It's like this head-crushing (brain-washing?), incessant metallic fog of a sound (Make Love is like breaking the surface for a brief breath of fresh air). Maybe I'm weird, but man I just love this album! When I heard of their break-up announcement the first song I played was Emotion. 🤖💓 (I also really love Electroma, I've seen it several times, and once in a cinema in an art gallery! Was super awesome on the big screen.)
Thats awesome. Yeah it definitely takes a bit to grow on you, and it won't hit with everyone. But if it hits you, you'll know. Cool to see you love it so much. And that art gallery viewing sounds dope as fuck.
I still remember having nightmares after seeing the music video of “prime time of your life” when I was 7 when i was just flicking channels until I stumbled this godamn music video on MTV. I’ve been trying to find that music video since until i found it again in 2013 when the Random Access Memories was released. All that nightmarish fever dream was real after all.
Finding out that all the bass sounds on this record were a real bass guitar through a Digitech Synth Wah really changed the way I thought about it. It’s a jam record. It’s them bringing the Darlin’ back into Daft Punk.
lol my first exposure of daft punk was back in '05, i lived next door a baseball park and when HAA dropped, they played robot rock and television rules the nation on repeat during those breaks in the game or whatever they call it (lol). to this day those tracks really remind me of baseball, and since '05 ive been chasin that daft punk sound, which in turn basically got me into music in general. HAA always got that special part in my music tastes, even tho it aint my fav daft punk album (homework) also im enjoyin these daft punk vids mane keep em up!
I don't know, there's something so alluring about this album. It exudes an aura of mystery; even the album cover feels like a siren song. I can stare at it for hours, trying to peer past the static and delve into its depths, only to find myself confronting the void, gazing into the reflection of a nonexistent TV. It feels like it's rotting my brain, brainwashing me, leaving me standing alone in the dark for hours, staring back at my own reflection. The synths are so RAW, they are screaming in agony, as if demons are howling in tongues while being skinned alive. Scratches and whispers emanate from unknown sources, adding to the eerie atmosphere. The singles' covers evoke the same unsettling feeling, reminiscent of the back rooms - familiar yet unnerving. There's something just... *off.* I think that's the essence of the album - it is what it is. That's all you get, and you can do whatever you want to with it. And they did it in "Alive 2007"; they flipped the songs, turning them with a PUNK ROCK energy.
Seriously this guy is so great, I really hope popularity takes you places, you deserve it. I found you through your first daft punk, now I've seen all your stuff. Always excited for what's next
11:36 I absolutely disagree... This album literally created the "electro clash/trash" era by leading the way for the likes of Justice, Digitalism, Boys Noize, Crystal Castles, MSTRKRFT and sooooo many more...!
Discovery might be the one closest to my heart but HAA is the only I find myself coming back to the most. It’s just so visceral and uncanny. People say it’s too repetitive and unpleasant sounding but doesn’t Homework also have super repetitive songs that are hard on the ears (Rock N’ Roll, Rollin’ and Scratchin’)? It’s a tough album to appreciate but once it clicks, it really shines
I know it's biased by the fact it's the first daft punk album i've listened to, but I find it absolutely great ! The bass lines are all incredible, I just love this robotic and creepy atmosphere, it's an album I like to listen to because it's almost an "extreme" in its style. And as you say, the xay they reused these tracks in alive is even better
Wow. I feel like given the quality of this content/art this should be a bigger channel. I'm always surprised to see how few views and likes these videos get... I thoroughly enjoy these videos, and the commentary you provide!
For me, songs from this album give me a "wtf is this song" feeling for the first 20 seconds or so, but then I immerse myself in the songs and enjoy them. Also, I don't think you should skip over covering the Tron Legacy soundtrack by Daft Punk. It's basically a whole separate album by them, considering the fact that it's really enjoyable to listen to both with and without the movie
Honestly, I think Daft Punk are masters at keeping you held onto a particular groove if the listener is open to it. It’s the grooves and the aesthetic that carry the album, but I think the directions the grooves go in for the majority of tracks is pretty good; obviously not as good as the other albums but still for standout tracks, it’s really good and provides enough variation to keep it progressing; like Human After All, The Prime Time Of Your Life, Steam Machine, The Brainwasher, Technologic and (controversially) Emotion. And I LOVE the aesthetic and especially appreciate how they can sound so distinct while making major shifts in their sound from each album. This aesthetic they achieved on HAA is soooo fascinating to me
I love your videos, how you capture the elements of the music, the era in which it was created in, its cultural impact, and how it sounds, regardless of nostalgia or what has been done to those tunes after their release. I discovered DP around '06, with the 1993-2005 CD-DVD collection, and later that year with all three studio albums, plus Alive '97 and the bootleg from their gig at Coachella, so I was pumped for the clips, for the music alone, but also for their mashups. I have to plead guilty as I do say I enjoy HAA over its siblings because of the Alive tour. I've listened to it last week, and didn't hold up as good as I thought it would. Oh and if you're creeped out by the HAA clips, you should sure give a look to Alterian Inc. Instagram's page, as they helped with Daft Punk for the making of the videos for those clips, but they are also part of the original team to design the legendary helmets. Cheers
Brooooo I am top fan, I remember downloaded the remix after all when I was kid but I lost my data and I could not hear it anymore. Thanks for unlocking this memory !
5:27 This is actually my favorite album lol, but I do actually wanna go back through their discography and relisten to all of their music, so we'll see if this changes
idk why but i listen to a lot of the remix album than the actual album itself. it's because I'm addicted to 3 SONGS on there which are: dat justice remix, sebastian remix, and that other version of robot rock. it just sounds so GUDDD
My vague memory of that album and it's songs have always been pretty positive. And the remixes that it fueled have always been pretty fire. DJ Hero, I'm lookin' at you.
I actually think it's quite common for an album to be panned on it's release only to be liked years later. Drukqs by Aphex springs to mind (I actually think they were right first time, as it appears to me most of his releases started going down hill from that point) Do you fancy doing a review of Aphexs albums?
Fair enough. And Aphex would be interesting sometime down the line. It has been a minute since I listened to him though so I'd have to revisit. I do recall seeing that though, about the downhill as I think Drukqs was like a real "magnum opus" attempt.
Honestly, saw your video on homework a few hours after it came out, and I was legitimately confused when I saw your sub count. Not trying to throw a bunch of importance at some symbol but I genuinely think that when the algorithm chooses you to shine in the near future, you’re gonna go far with it. Calling it now

The epilogue was made with rush , i mean it's not orchestrated, a new video, a new track ,like "we have to run now we can't explain guys ,bye!"; i always imagine their goodbye like a "Mothership reconnection"or a returning to the laboratory video ,and then a big door (like star wars )close the room and the scene.
@@pumpkin91ful that’s part of their presence though, they’re mysterious, and they don’t have to give a reason, in fact, it’d be weird if they did considering their usual secrecy, and it’s clear that they just didn’t want to make music together anymore, I don’t think it’s rushed, in fact, there’s a bunch of hidden things in it, and why make a new video, the Electroma scene they chose works so well, in fact, if you sync Touch with Epilogue, it’s like the robots are talking to each other, and there’s a video on it too, it may not have been what you wanted, but it fits as a really sweet goodbye
You can hear the heavy chords and slow progression vibes.
all hail onlysmallbites
This is, actually, my favourite Daft Punk album. It receives too much hate, and I've loved it from my first listening.
me too man
It's my n2 daft punk after ram
Justice opening for Alive 2007 would have been a holy experience
I appreciate this video sm because I love that album honestly. It’s so authentically them. I love how they never feared to take hard lefts.
Well thanks mate, there's a lot to like on it for sure. Have a fav song on it?
@@onlysmallbitesDefinitely technologic or robot rock as they really nail the albums vibe so well!
This is by far my favourite daft punk album. I can't listen to one song without listening to whole album. I got an original vinyl copy of the album and I'm so happy with it. I love this album so much
My Hot take/unpopular opinion
My favorite Daft Punk album order list
1. Homework
2. Human after all
3. Discovery
I personally love this album. Yes I do agree that it is simple and sometimes blatantly lazy, but it’s strange, unique sound is what makes me come back time and time again. It also includes some literal bangers like HAA and Prime Time Of Your Life.
exactly, ptofl is so slept on
I was about to turn 16 when Human After All came out although I don't consider it their best work it is my favorite album of theirs, Thomas Bangalter once said about the album it was made to make you feel unsettled and I loved that, Daft Punk's aesthetic back then, the music, the videos, the mystery it was so captivating to me.
If this album didn’t exist we would’ve never got ALIVE 2006/7
Yessss
(I also really love Electroma, I've seen it several times, and once in a cinema in an art gallery! Was super awesome on the big screen.)
Thats awesome. Yeah it definitely takes a bit to grow on you, and it won't hit with everyone. But if it hits you, you'll know. Cool to see you love it so much.
And that art gallery viewing sounds dope as fuck.
@@onlysmallbites thanks so much for the thoughtful response! 😊 And yes, the art gallery experience is a cherished memory!
For an album made in 6 weeks, it’s still a very damn good effort
I cant wait till you talk about Daft Club
I still remember having nightmares after seeing the music video of “prime time of your life” when I was 7 when i was just flicking channels until I stumbled this godamn music video on MTV. I’ve been trying to find that music video since until i found it again in 2013 when the Random Access Memories was released. All that nightmarish fever dream was real after all.
Really channeling your inner Dank Pods at 10:23 lol
I guess we’re getting a random access memories vid
this album has make love on it, it’s flawless
Everyone makes mistakes, even Daft Punk, and thats what makes them *Human After All*
Yesss
no.
Television rules the nation best song on the album
Finding out that all the bass sounds on this record were a real bass guitar through a Digitech Synth Wah really changed the way I thought about it. It’s a jam record. It’s them bringing the Darlin’ back into Daft Punk.
Yup, that's also right! I thought that was also pretty neat. Have a fav song on here?
''It’s them bringing the Darlin’ back into Daft Punk''.
More like... Bringin the Darlin' funk back to the punk, heh?
ooooo gottem
i love these daft punk videos, ur lil drawings you add are epic.
I would love a video on Justice and Cross! It's one of my favorite albums
lol my first exposure of daft punk was back in '05, i lived next door a baseball park and when HAA dropped, they played robot rock and television rules the nation on repeat during those breaks in the game or whatever they call it (lol). to this day those tracks really remind me of baseball, and since '05 ive been chasin that daft punk sound, which in turn basically got me into music in general.
HAA always got that special part in my music tastes, even tho it aint my fav daft punk album (homework)
also im enjoyin these daft punk vids mane keep em up!
*off.*
I think that's the essence of the album - it is what it is. That's all you get, and you can do whatever you want to with it. And they did it in "Alive 2007"; they flipped the songs, turning them with a PUNK ROCK energy.
This video is the reason I often refer to Daft Punk as Daffy Paffy.
I am in love with your retrospective vids! Good work!
Seriously this guy is so great, I really hope popularity takes you places, you deserve it. I found you through your first daft punk, now I've seen all your stuff. Always excited for what's next
great vid, i love it!!!!
11:36 I absolutely disagree... This album literally created the "electro clash/trash" era by leading the way for the likes of Justice, Digitalism, Boys Noize, Crystal Castles, MSTRKRFT and sooooo many more...!
Emotion was a very emotional underrated song imo
Discovery might be the one closest to my heart but HAA is the only I find myself coming back to the most. It’s just so visceral and uncanny. People say it’s too repetitive and unpleasant sounding but doesn’t Homework also have super repetitive songs that are hard on the ears (Rock N’ Roll, Rollin’ and Scratchin’)? It’s a tough album to appreciate but once it clicks, it really shines
This is my favorite Daft Punk album out of spite
Ohh and Justice is also amazing
I know it's biased by the fact it's the first daft punk album i've listened to, but I find it absolutely great !
The bass lines are all incredible, I just love this robotic and creepy atmosphere, it's an album I like to listen to because it's almost an "extreme" in its style. And as you say, the xay they reused these tracks in alive is even better
Wow. I feel like given the quality of this content/art this should be a bigger channel. I'm always surprised to see how few views and likes these videos get... I thoroughly enjoy these videos, and the commentary you provide!
Well ay, thanks a lot, that means a bunch. I guess I just gotta wait my turn 'til lord RUclips gives me another spotlight.
Good video man. Extremely relatable on the simplest of terms
Creator on the Rise
I love this album, I dont see why so many people hate it. I think its really good and all their albums show ALL of their sides of themselves
Honestly, I absolutely love Human After All. I was honestly shocked to hear others didn’t so much! I’d take it over homework any day
I'm really surprised that people don't like this album, it's my favorite from their discography
Definitely please make a video about Cross
5:27 This is actually my favorite album lol, but I do actually wanna go back through their discography and relisten to all of their music, so we'll see if this changes
Hey bro keep making your videos I enjoy watching them !!!!
idk why but i listen to a lot of the remix album than the actual album itself. it's because I'm addicted to 3 SONGS on there which are: dat justice remix, sebastian remix, and that other version of robot rock. it just sounds so GUDDD
My vague memory of that album and it's songs have always been pretty positive. And the remixes that it fueled have always been pretty fire. DJ Hero, I'm lookin' at you.
love your videos on Daft Punk!
Well hey, thanks Erik 👍
Man you’re going to explode, keep going
I actually think it's quite common for an album to be panned on it's release only to be liked years later.
Drukqs by Aphex springs to mind (I actually think they were right first time, as it appears to me most of his releases started going down hill from that point)
Do you fancy doing a review of Aphexs albums?
Fair enough. And Aphex would be interesting sometime down the line. It has been a minute since I listened to him though so I'd have to revisit. I do recall seeing that though, about the downhill as I think Drukqs was like a real "magnum opus" attempt.
Honestly, saw your video on homework a few hours after it came out, and I was legitimately confused when I saw your sub count. Not trying to throw a bunch of importance at some symbol but I genuinely think that when the algorithm chooses you to shine in the near future, you’re gonna go far with it. Calling it now
Yeah, I don't know what youtube's doing with me. It's like they've disowned me from the jump ;( but thanks for stopping by!
Maybe cause it's not naked yoga or something, apparently that was a thing.
of the trio of pre-ram studio albums HAA is absolutely my favourite. I like the atmosphere, the raw, thick synths and guitars, the robotic vocals -- I know it's not for everyone but I love it.
fair enough, there's a lot to like here. Have a fav song on it?
@@onlysmallbites has to be HAA (which is a fantastic opener) or technologic - but I also really like television (the unreleased radio edit from the music vid is nice too) and I do put on emotion/make love quite frequently. tbh I do forget about brainwasher! but its a banger once it gets going.
I loved Human After all, in fact is my fave Daft Punk albumm, and was pretty surprised to hear it was hated back when it was released at the time.
Also, kudos for Jet Set Radio music!
I like your channel, greeting from France !
2:25 I love that photo
Emotion will always be a comfort song for me, as well as Make Love.
Love ur style man, keep it up
Homework: Dogs, Androids, Firemen and Tomatoes
Discovery: Anime
Human After All: Televisions
Next you should do Secrets in Alive 2007
this is one of my favorite albums, in top 5 for sure
I really enjoy Human After All, the beats and groove are something else
I love those simple tracks, but as much as I love robot rock... It's proppably their laziest track :/
But oh god.. The Title Track, The Prime Time of your life, Brainwasher, Television Rules the Nation, Make Love and Technologic are great
I love the Album Reviews, i hope you keep doing those albums revivew just for fun, btw try also revivew the Tron Legacy soundtrack after RAM
Human After All, really come just behind of my favorite, Randon Access Memory, in my own lens!
I haven't watched Electroma ever in my life nor did I looked it up on the wiki or anything (to avoid getting spoiled) and this 8:06 shit SHOCKED the living shit out of me. My whole life is a lie
That makes 2 of us, you hate to see it smh.
Human After All is my favorite album. I remember downloading it on a DSL connection.
This album wasn't fully realized IMO, until we got Alive 2007. Human After All made Alive 2007 as awesome as it is
Looking forward to your RAM video! Once you hit 909 of course. The longer the better 🤩
HAA is my second favorite album by them after Homework. it has... something unique to it... i love it.
Prestigious Mr. Bites of the Only Small variety, your twitter link isn't working for me. Is there a way I can dm you?
Robot Rock is my favorite Daft Punk song.
I know it’s on the more repetitive side but Emotion’s one of my favorites from the album. It’s even among one of my overall favs.
Human after all will forever be one of my favorite tracks from them
