The answer to the riddle might be that he bought with haram money, because anything bought with haram money (ex: stolen) will therefore be haram

Okay basically what happened was that there was a place where they kept all their stores in the time of the prophet (pbuh) and abu hurairah ra was guarding the place one night, and a man came and stole something from there so abu hurairah caught him. but because the man pleaded that he needed to feed his family, abu hurairah let him go. the same thing happened the next night, but the night after that, abu hurairah stopped him and told him he was going to take him to the prophet (pbuh). the man pleaded with him not to, and said he would tell him what to recite to have protection from the devil if abu hurairah let him go. Abu hurairah agreed and the man told him to recite ayat-ul-kursi and then he ran away. abu hurairah went to the prophet (pbuh) and told him about this. the prophet then told him that the man was in fact a devil himself. i don't know if it was actually shaytaan himself or not, but i know it was a devil, hope this helps :)
