James, that looks like an ER type collet chuck you have there. If you really wanted to start the cross hole with a centre drill (and that is a *good* idea) you can swap out the collet for one that fits the centre drill, and not have to worry about the jaws in your drill chuck making it run off centre. Just sayin'...

JC S I have a bottle of cutting oil thinned a bit with Marvel Mystery Oil during the winter months helps it flow .
