- Photographing Pied and Spotted Flycatchers. Two very attractive species that are usually quite easy to photograph, although finding a Spotted flycatcher today can be a challange. I use the 150-400mm Olympus lens and the OM-1 camera body to photograph both species. The woodland light causes problems with highlights when the sun is shining and the only solution is to return later when the sun is hidden behind cloud and the light much softer.

Wonderful images!! And great tips as usual!
I like all your videos, the tone is just so peaceful... much better than tv....
Great, thank you Mike
Hey Mike,
for the pied flycatcher, there is a quite easy way to attract them to your "garden"
They arrive very late in spring, so most of the "housing" is already taken up by tits.
At least here in germany, we have two kinds:
The blue tit and the great tit.
They are okay with nesting next to each other, but they will defend the "nesting territory" versus other tits of the same kind.
So if you put up 3 houses very close to each other: one will be taken by a blue, the other by a great one, but the third one will be left free, since the blue and the greater will fight off any other birds of the same kind.
They wont fight a flycatcher though, so once they arrive, they will find an empty spot and will happily go there.
This works for northern germany, i think it differs from region to region, thing is: provide enough nesting room and put it close together.
My dad figured it out more or less by accident, but since then, several nature conservation groups used this method to great effect to establish stable pied flycatcher populations here.
Best regards,
Benjamin
Awesome tip, thanks for sharing. I hope I'll get a chance to try this in the coming years.
@@benedux you can even close the opening of the housing for the flycatcher before the first birds arrive, wait for the other housings to be occupied and then open the flycatcher one. So to guide the flycatcher to the most beautiful/photogenic housing. Maybe plant a little tree as a perch next to it :) good luck!
Another excellent video Mike
Thanks for sharing Mike !
My pleasure
Lovely little birds and another fabulous and enjoyable video.
Another nice video mike !!
Thanks again for so many tips in your videos, I learned a lot. About the background, I just like the lighter spots etc in stead of an a smooth background, sometimes i like the background more then the subject :-)
Hi Mike, Greetings from North Yorkshire. Another informative video about another bird species. Thank you, you are helping me in bucket loads. 👍
Very informative Mike, I had no idea they were so confiding, you have incentivised me to go and find some in a North Wales reserve next year.
Glad to help
beautiful really beautiful, thanks so much.
Hi Mike Thanks for another great video.
Brilliant video
Great work again, Mike!
New video, so happy!!!!
Прекрасный фотографии, удачи и здоровья ☺
Lovely little birds. I have yet to spot a pied flycatcher myself but I think I have photographed a spotted flycatcher in the past, unless there is something similar I might have confused it with, not being an expert! ! Very interesting info about how to photograph them. Thanks as always. :)
Hello Mike, this is a very fine video of you and well spoken!! I do exactly as you do and after a while i always find the nest and take my time to see where the movements are and
fly directions.Very nice to see how you take your time and adapts to the environment.Greetings from the Netherlands and just subscribed.Lots of filmpleasure!!
thanks.
Hi Mike.
I shoot mostly wildlife videos, I know your channel is about photography, but you also show a lot of great video footage on your episodes. Would you please consider making some episodes on your wildlife filming techniques?
Best Wishes

Hi Mike when you have the light that's best for you are you able to retrieve all the detail in the black and white feathers ? or do you adjust accordingly to get the best from the darker or brighter feathers ?
Thank you Mike again for all your terrific videos, especially the ones made using the M 4/3 cameras and lens.
In softer light there will be more detail in the whites and any adjustments will be less.
Excellent stuff as always Mike. Just wondering if anyone in the UK had bought the Buteo hide post Brexit and could comment on how easy or otherwise the process was please
Thanks Mike. Here in France it's the opposite, plenty of spotted flycatchers, but no pied flycatchers. I'm still trying to catch that inflight action shot.
👍 nice
Do you film in log400? Use Lut?
What slowmo?
I do not use Log or LUT. It would be 120 fps on the GH6
@@MikeLaneFRPS Do you find the GH6 to have better video quality
than the OM-1?
@@ulflundh5813 I do not notice a difference in quality except the GH6 is capable of 4K at 120 fps which I use a lot. The OM-1 is HD only at 120 fps.
Hi Mike, nice video as always. Btw, do you not have an Instagram account? I tried searching but couldn’t find. You have such lovely bird photos that could be showcased on Instagram!
I may have an old one that I never really used. Not sure what it might be called either. RUclips is my only venture into social media.
Great video as always :). Footage of birds in slow motion was recorded on om1 or gh6? :)
GH6
Great video Mike. Where can I get that hide? thanks
www.buteophotogear.com
You can try to use a balloon with water to hydrate the branch.
Brilliant video Mike. Where did you visit to photograph the Pied Flycatchers? Many thanks.
Sorry Tommy if I name the site it gets overrun with visitors.
All your knowledge about birds' behavior... Did you get it from your own experience or did you study something related?
Just doing it a lot a long time.
Your lens is 500mm f5.6 (with TC). With the crop factor 2 that yields an FF equivalence of 1000mm f11. If it were 1000mm f5.6 as you said, it would need to have a diameter of 1000mm/5.6, which equals 178mm. Which your lens doesn't have.
