It's no wonder I didn't recognize him because my dad was a big man with a full head of thick black hair. My mom then told me that he'd been fighting cancer for several months, and she hadn't told me because she didn't want to worry me and didn't want me freaking out. Like seeing the shocking transformation of him all of a sudden like that didn't freak me out!!! He died two weeks later. "He was a workaholic, so the doctor said it must have taken its toll." Yup, I can see that. I was an elementary school teacher, and I was a workaholic to make my work the best it could be for my students, working 16 to 18 hours a day, including a lot of work on the weekends and those "breaks" in the school year. I was constantly exhausted, and my health suffered from it. When I was forced to retire (not because of my health, but because of a prejudiced, religious zealot who became my school's new principal), my health immediately improved. My blood pressure dropped down to normal, the ulcer that I'd been developing stopped bothering me and healed, etc. I learned that it was indeed possible to work yourself to death. So as much as I hated being forced to retire, it turned out to be a good thing for me in the long run. I still miss my students, though. Unfortunately, unlike the MC, I didn't have a kindly old man bring me a wife. 😞 💔
