Absolutely gorgeous! We just had a large tree come down due to some storms and found this video while looking for ideas as to what to do with the resulting 15' stump. This is exactly what I had pictured in my mind! Stellar job!
Another great piece Chris! I know these videos aren’t meant as tutorials, but I learn something (sometimes a lot of somethings) from your videos. I do enjoy watching a master craftsman at work. Whether it’s with a chainsaw, or a small hand chisel or building a timber frame. I wish we were neighbors.
Thank you for posting this video, Mr. LaMontagne. Quite instructive for me. I'm learning to carve with hand and dremel tools. Most videos I see demonstrating how to carve a wood spirit aim for spritelike faces -- a "rustic" look but not a very *natural* one. For instance, they'll make simple hollows for the eyes or mouth. Your detailed, naturalistic style is a helpful counterpoint to all that as I figure out what I want my spirits to look like.
Stunning piece brother ! Pleasure to watch a true artist create.... looks like it was a tough carve when you were hand carving it, but I got some tips on how to do my wood spirit mouths differently so thanks for sharing Chris. PS Lucky people to get to have an Awesome Wood Spirit in their garden.....
A "wild" experience watching the Tree Spirit come to life right on my lap top!!!! Please put more of a smile on your characters as they will be more pleasing to look at... I believe they will sell faster and for more money..... higher mustache sides where it curls down, a little high, puffier in the cheeks and a wrinkle in the fore head above the eyes brows, turn up at ends of the eyes, then show an open month with a little tongue with a few tips of the bottom front teeth, shows he about to spout a few words of wisdom.... Good Luck..... More Character to the Character brings him almost to life....... Now he is "Jolly Wise Tree Spirit"!!!!!!!!!!!
@@Woodcarving_Master I just started Dremel carving, and I'm loving it. So far I've only worked on wood spirits. I just found your videos, and watching you work is teaching me so much about technique. Thank you for sharing your art process. I know one day I am going to want to try chainsaw carving just so I can make larger scale pieces. I know what I'm learning from watching artists, like yourself, will be invaluable. Your pieces are so beautiful and give me so much inspiration! Thank you, again, for sharing how you make them.✨💖✨
I'm starting my biggest tree spirit now in my backyard on a huge maple stump. You have great talent and a knack for facial expression. May I ask - in your video near the end you finished up the beard with the chain saw then the video went straight to the final product......did you use a little torch flame to smooth out the beard to get the final look? Again, bravo.
Yes likely torched then rubbed with stiff scrub brush...then wood deck oil of your choice. This pc was in white oak...different species react different to torch and oil as far as color and tone.try on pc of scrap irst of same species for desired color etc
Thks Just lightly torched it with plumbers propane torch rubbed with stiff scrub brush afterwards and some exterior wood deck oil from lowes..nothing fancy any exterior deck oil would work its about the application and Suttle burning with torch etc.
while your work is amazing and your skills are fantastic, I wish you could give some info as to what type of saw you using ,size , blade/ size and where can I buy it, cause its very difficult to work with the wrong TOOL thank you master
I use 3 saws on that project Husqvarna 365 withv18nch bar 3/8ths full skip chain Husqvarna 543 with 16 inch 1/4 size carving tip with 1/4 pitch chain And an echo CS-2511T with 12 inch bar with dime carving tip and 1/4 pitch chain....My videos are more geared for entertainment then how to but I do help to answer questions of those that inquire to help themselves.. Those were what I used on that project but it could of still been accomplished With other chainsaws and bars ...those are just my preferenced tools for this project....its more about your skills with what you have...even with the best equipment...one might not be able to accomplish what I do etc...all depends on you skill and determination..good luck👍 to you..😎
My goodness you are the wood spirit wizard with a chainsaw! It would be an honor to be this good someday! Beautiful work!! From a humble beginner..

Great work!

That’s a nice one,it still amazes me how you can dam near finish a piece with the saw , it would have took me forever on white oak.
Gotta keep chain very sharp and have setting for bar oil on high flow...chain heats up very fast with hardwood etc.

Beautiful job! What did you use to sand it with?
