Hi Joel - just wanted to let you know how much I have enjoyed watching your "American Reacts" videos over the years. You have a very engaging manner and your accent is very pleasant. I speak as an Irish citizen who came to live in the UK over 50 years ago at the age of 23. I have travelled and worked in USA, France, Netherlands and Belgium but love the UK most of all - probably the most civilised country in the World. Living 30 miles west of London in Marlow (South Bucks). Keep up the good work.

I cannot believe someone called you annoying, Joel. You are fair-minded, tolerant and have a good sense of humour. You have an endearing ability to laugh at yourself but you have a clear sense of affection for your home country and so you should have. It has its faults, which you readily admit to but then so have we here in the UK; no country is perfect. Your appreciation of the UK is really gratifying. As for your American accent - keep it going bro; honestly, it’s just fine 👍and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.

Stereotypes do usually have a basis of truth though it can be outdated.
I remember talking to an American tourist in Blarney Castle back in 1960. He was dressed in the then standard American tourist outfit, Rupert Bear trousers etc.
The joke was he knew it and asked how we realised he was an American, he asked if his watch band gave him away.

When the effectiveness of psychotherapists was investigated a while ago three factors were found to be highly associated with successful therapy. These were warmth, genuineness and empathy. I have found that these factors also matter in personal exchanges in everyday life in any cultural setting. At the risk of being ingratiating, I would suggest that these three are also key to the success of your channel, Mr. Simpson.

I don’t really understand why us British people feel we have the right to call anyone fat, loud, bad at geography or whatever because we have enough here who are in those categories.
When I’ve been to America I’ve visited museums when school children were on a trip around them and they were well behaved and l didn’t see one child who was overweight 🤷🏻‍♀️ I’m not saying there aren’t any just that in a lot of countries you’ll get people who enjoy big portions of food or get shouty, can’t find their way off a car park. 😂

I spoke to someone at the bus stop recently, just being friendly, he took out the ear plugs I hadn't spotted, in a huffy manner, and said , "do I know you?". I was a bit dumb struck, but that is the modern generation I am afraid. They are going to be very lonely in years to come. It's sad 😢

Happily I long ago banished those stereotypes about Americans from my brain. I went to work at a DODDS High School in UK and learned for myself that the majority of Americans are genuinely kind, generous, humane, funny and personable. Like all of us, they tended to believe that the US way was right and anything else was wrong but of course it's vice versa for us.

Joel, regarding food sizes; we can see a lot of USA videos where the sizes are huge and it never really gets spoken about unless it's mcdonalds, usually the fries and drink sizes. Very rarely we get to see people commenting on the portion size of regular British food. Do you notice the difference when you're eating at say a British pub vs what you'd normally expect to be served in the USA? I sometimes see tacos being ordered/eaten by americans and it's not something I would personally buy as it doesn't seem like a lot of food, and that's coming from a brit.

  • @operationfish

Brits should admit that we have lots of fat people in the UK, and they are getting more and more obese. Regarding Trump - what can you say - are 72% of the US voters really daft, or just not listening to him. But we in the UK seem to be following that trend, because Farage, who loves Trump, is predicted to be our next PM. God help us. The accent 'thing' is spot on. Joel, your accent is great, and you're smashing chap. Cheers ! Sheffield South Yorkshire.

I find that Americans always sound very natural and comfortable when speaking to a group or being recorded. Myself and many other Brits just don't, particularly us Yorkshire folk. We might sound confident and natural when speaking with friends but as soon as we know we're being recorded we sound terrible, and it's not something we can control. I think it's subconscious 😂fellow Yorkshiremen, you will know what I mean. Ever heard your own voice being played back to you?

  • @AJ87868
    @AJ87868 3 months ago +2

Americans are loud compared to Brits because they speak more from the diaphragm rather than from the head like Brits do, and also because Brits have the reserved character where you try to keep your conversations to yourselves and not talk so loudly as to disturb others.

I ;live near Heathrow, as well . Name of the Pub? Most American's don't travel, overseas. Unless they're in the military. Then they live on base, and tend live in a mini America. The children go to school, on base, speak with American accents, even if born overseas. They go shopping on base, everything is done on base. The other travellers, tend to mostly be over 50. Then its seeing all of Europe, in 10 days.
We brits if we go to the USA, we tend to stay in Villas. Hirer a car, go shopping at Walmart, Publix , Target. We want to get out and about, meet people, see the area. Were not going to the USA, for less than two weeks.

Nah Joel you're too polite, open minded and naturally intelligent to be annoying. As mentioned below the nothern bits of the England are just that bit more open to street corner conversations, I've had two myself just today, nothing of great consequence just a little bit of oil on the social wheels. As you say it is becoming a bit of a dying art at the moment.
On accents some of the US midwest/western slow speaking accents that just roll out like distant thunder I find really easy on the ear compared with the strident NY accent. As for the UK Geordie I can listen to for hours even though I can hardly understand some of it. But to nail my colours to the mast a Scots accent nails it for me but having a Scots Da means I'm just that bit biased.
Great choice again of video Joel.

I have met American’s in Hong Kong and basically had to school them about manners because they felt like the world was theirs!
Was in a taxi cab and the American people were too focused on arguing with each other rather than getting a grasp on the situation..
Being in a taxi in the middle of Hong Kong a business hub of the world…
The taxi driver just wanted to get paid because he drove from Kowloon to Hong Kong island and that was his living..
    Being a Welsh Lad 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿
    I totally got it!
I came from nothing, still am really…
But to not acknowledge differences in culture while travelling is so inconsiderate and damn right ignorant! X
    I’m not saying that’s you Joel! X
I also factor in states within America! X
Joel, you’re very adept to different cultures from around the world, and this I like very much! X

In both our towns and cities. Just don't keep complaining about things. We don't really want to hear it. Unfortunately, that's an Aussie stereotype of Brits (that's our nicer name for you guys). Joel your action is minimal and at least you don't have that horrid draw. Why on earth though do you use "bro" as punctuation? Listen to your commentary. Most of the time it is totally unnecessary.

Millions of US voters voted less for Trump in 2024 than when he lost in 2020.
The fact that he became president again was due to the opposing candidate Harris.
She received 15 million fewer votes than Biden in 2020.
In the USA, people vote predominantly on the basis of sympathy.
      Not for rational, intellectual reasons.
What had this horrible Trump do to make voters find Harris even less likeable than him? Even though he was talking sick nonsense.

Mate you're not annoying at all
Stereotypes are absolute nonsense, we all know that. It's wrong to tar everyone with the same brush. The US has 100s of millions of people living there so it's impossible to say they're all the same. Glad you laughed it all off though 👍
