The comments here seem to indicate that this song isn't liked--I think it's fine. Bolan's fingerprints are all over this, and the drumming is quite dynamic.

Marc added some Guitar licks to this and the other three BBC Tracks, in post production, John's Children recorded on June 12,1967 for the "Saturday Club" Radio Program.

I wish Marc would have not overdubbed those licks!
It would sound more like "The Who" without them!
You know, with today's technology, can someone remix John Children's doomed classic "Midsummer Night's Scene" and remove Manager Simon Napier Bell's obnoxious overdubbed "Oo's", after the choruses, which made Marc leave the band.
They could also synchronize the "Pedals And Flowers" background Vocals.
It's a shame the group couldn't have overruled Bell and had his overdubs mixed out and released the song back in '67!

THE PERFUMED GARDEN OF GULLIVER SMITH ~ LYRICS BY MARC BOLAN
I'm walking in the perfumed garden of Gulliver Smith
Who said that smiling candles waving gently
    Would always laugh at him
    Because he was so unattractive
And so sadly hating things he saw
That were more pleasanter than he, see
I'm smiling sadly to his friend whose enemy would always lend
    A kind remark
    A kiss to spark
A key to enter in the dark
A hiding place, a place to make
A paradise divorcing all your cares
    And all those scary people
And I dare you to scream
I'm talking in the perfumed garden of Gulliver Smith who said that
I was right and he was wrong to play upon a Chinese gong
And as I look to my dismay
    The nighttime faded into day
    Proclaiming sacrifice
    Killing all that was nice
    Time arrives with insane crime

They re-recorded this when they briefly came back in the 90s and that version sounds better IMO

Gulliver's garden must be some kind of raw sewage dump, or something because the odorous fragrance from its perfume gives off the putrid scent of shite...hence, this song!!! I've heard songs performed by John's Children that sound much better than this. I can guarentee that even members of the band would even agree, in hindsight.
