Shining Force for SURE ! It's so quick and snappy, and easy to get into and has so much dang CHARM (the most charm out of all of them I think). And excellent music too!
Shining Force 3 somehow got lost in history itself. It had 3 scenarios, each its own disc and maybe 150 hours of gameplay! Truly epic and political storyline. You can now play scenarios 2 and 3 in English for the Saturn, I highly recommend for people to help revive this lost gem. One of the greatest and the last of the Shining Force series.
Best music in gaming ever ! Especially part 2
I love Shining Force! I first played Shining Force CD on the X'Eye. What an amazing series!
@@zach5381shining force cd people forget about as well.
Jeanne d’Arc is one of my favorites one on PSP. It’s so good that game!
Love playing this on the TV with the PSTV!
*Front Mission 3* for PSX ❤
Great list, i'd like to add Valkyria Chronicles as an honourable mention. Especially Valkyria Chronicles 4 i thought that was the peak of the series.
Just got into this series 5 years ago or so. Hopefully 5 is made
So true. Valkyria chronicles series is underrated gems. My favorite is 4 as well. Many people didn't really like the story, but I found 4 is the best alongside 3.
Let's get violent for vegetables!
Valkyria Chronicles 4, isn’t it the one with way too much talking instead of Battling? OMG
Devil Survior Overclocked is top my list, love how it combines the genre of traditional RPG and strategy RPG. Absolute hidden gem these days, feel like it's been forgotten.
I bought 1 and 2 and am still yet to play, thanks for the reminder.
Good call. I played OG devil survivor on DS and lost my poop for it. It really captured me.
Vandal heart is my all time favorite strategy game and omg the soundtrack! Im glad to see it getting some love.
Jonny just wanted to say your videos have been a huge help lately. Recently lost my grandfather and your constant positivity is infectious and helpful thank you for all the great videos man 😊
i totally agree gab :)
Ogre Battle 64 will always be in my top 5 strategy/RPG games of all time. Really excited for Unicorn Overlord, as it has many of the same elements that made Ogre Battle 64 so good!
Tactics Ogre is another classic
It's funny that you got sponsored by a game you would have talked about without a sponsor. Nicely done!
RUclipsrs do that a lot. These companies do their research for sponsors.
Yeah he only takes sponsors for games he actually cares about which is refreshing compared to other guys pushing mobile games they don't actually play.
My favorite strategy game is Fire Emblem the Sacred Stones for the GBA. Me and my friend played that game so much growing up battling each other.
Not this much lol.
That’s what I’ve noticed when persona 3 reload a few weeks back lol
Dragon Force on the Sega Saturn is one I would add to this list too
Dragon Force! I need to finish that. Trying to get through Shining Force 3 (scenario 2 currently).
So many games and not enough time lol
new XCOMs, Banner Saga series, Age of Wonders Planetfall, Stellaris
and ofc Disgaea series! ;)
Herzog Zwei was my jam
LOL I spent an entire weekend on this game with a friend from highschool when this game came out. Hard to believe it's been 30 some years.
Does anyone know of a modern game with similar/identical play mechanics? Its genius.
I know it was the sponsored game, but Unicorn Overlord is gonna go down as an all-time, legendary strategy game. It’s absolutely amazing.
i pre ordered 2 copies. one for me and one for my sister.
I hope I can buy it soon, it's basically a 2024 version of Ogre Battle: March of the Black Queen.
Definitely!
Shining Force series ftw. I’m still hoping all three scenarios of Shining Force 3 will get a remaster… Especially after the news that Sega will be doing remakes of their hit franchises. 🙏
Came to comment for exactly this- Shining Force 2… I think Johnny would love it.
@@AkroNites85
Every couple of years I do a run through of Shining Force 2, still in my list of all time favs.
I really loved Shining Force CD! I hope the Shining force games get some remastery treatment in the future. I would buy a Switch 2 just to play them!
The dream
Ring of Red: An early era PS2 game that had you commanding mechs in a combination of turn based movement and a timed battle system where the longer you aim the more accurate your shell would be; as shown by an ever increasing percentage display, but as the cost of time. It gets super tense when you and your opponent are one shot away from killing each other it is a question of how long can you wait to ensure their destruction before they fire at you. Underrated gem that never gets the love it deserves.
Only problem I had with this one, the disc drive was driving me crazy because the game is on a CD and not a DVD.
Fantastic game indeed!
Brigandine Legend of Forsena was my baptism to strategy games and Legend of Runersia was a good successor but nothing can beat the original as it gives closure and lore to all characters but Fire Emblem Three Houses does character afterstory best
I feel Legend of Runersia lost a lot of the charm of the original Brigandine. I also felt the characters a little more dull and the women over sexualized.
I love that every Sunday morning when I wake up there is a new video that makes me want to go and revisit all my favorite old games. Never really played strategy games too much but your enthusiasm makes me want to try one now!
Good morning,
I just wanted to say thanks for the consistent video you release. I work in my wood shop all day from 5am to 5pm and just love watching your latest or old videos. Please keep up the great work 👍🏻.
Always look forward to the Sunday episodes. This has me in the mood for some strategy games now.
Much love as always from your old hunting grounds, Wakefield!
I love that your channel does Raid: Shadow Legends-style ad reads, but they're all for actually excellent, well-regarded triple-A games. Makes me happy.
Definitely contemplating getting front mission 1 on eShop switch. Plus I'm super loving fire Emblem Engage, need to try to go back to back triangle strategy, octopath 1-2
I enjoyed the hell out of Unicorn Overlord’s demo. It is such an addictive game.
Good morning,

So many amazing franchises in this category. Great video!
Love the channel. I'm almost 40 and you're like the big bro I never had. Game on fam!
i love your videos, i like to watch them when im just winding down after work. keep it up bro.
Great video. I always feel positive after watching your videos. The passion and positivity is awesome.
Played the Unicorn Overlord demo a little over a week ago, pre-ordered the game that same day. Great video btw and love my happy console gamer shirt as well :)
Always happy to see Vandal Hearts getting some love! 💚 Such a great game. First game I played for my RUclips channel, so huge amount of nostalgia for me in multiple ways. Awesome video with a lot of gaming greatness! 😁👍
Enjoyed the episode! Master of Monsters and Herzog Zwei were two of my favorite console strategy games, I still have my genesis cartridges too!
FF Tactics was my game just a year ago from January to April of 2023 and it was as wonderful for me as all of the praise suggested. It’s thanks to you, Johnny, I’ve fallen in love with the genre, thanks for this list giving me more ideas of stuff to try
Thanks again for another wonderful Sunday entry.
Best of luck with your Mom, we know it's hard.
Spend as much time with her as you can.
Man‼️ everyone is on the Unicorn Overlord hype train I am so looking forward to it!
Amazing video! I definitely had to re-examine my switch library after watching your video. Also I love Final Fantasy Tactics. It’s on my top 3 games of all time and soundtrack as well! I was surprised you didn’t talk about Suikoden. I did play front mission 1st on an emulator on my Wii. Great game. I was surprised you didn’t talk about Front Mission on ps1 where I really first played it. Amazing series! Where’s our sequels! Anyways great stuff! Thank you! You always make me look forward to Sundays.
Been watching for ten years, and still love every episode. Great work Johnny
Thanks for sharing.
So so happy you mentioned Vandal Hearts. It's criminally underrated. Such awesome memories playing that game. Sadly I never tried the sequel.
My favorite strategy game of all time is Shining Force II for the Genesis. If you haven't played it, it is an absolute MUST! Thanks!
Yes. Unicorn Overlord. Can’t wait baby! Day one and I’ll be picking it up at my local GameStop.
With that being said, I’m actually playing Advance War Reboot and I’m on the second title. Trying to beat it before March 8th.

Being about the same age as you, it's awesome to hear your stories and how much a lot of your experiences parallel my own!
Awesome video man 😎!
Awesome to see Unicorn Strategy sponsor! No better channel to have talk about it than you. Great video as well!
Also, what is the shirt? It looks like Lodoss War, but I don’t think it is..
Great list. I haven't played them all but FFT and Vandal Hearts hold a really special place in my gaming nostalgia. Wargroove is a recent game in this category that I played and was absolutely blown away by
GrimGrimoire, PS2 and Switch Re-make. Different type of strategy game that I enjoyed back on the PS2.
Unicorn Overlord is amazing, really hope you give it a playthrough and an unsponsored review.
great channel dude
Great video, Johnny! Big fan of Atlus teaming with RUclipsrs. I wasn't sure what type of game Unicorn Overlord was going to be - a heavy story-based novel like Aegis Rim or something more tactical? This video puts it in the category of strategy games though, which is my preference.
Agree with your list for console strat games, but Command and Conquer and Red Alert were my entry to the genre. Loved taking more of the map.
Vanguard Bandits is one of my favs
I remember going into Blockbuster and loving the cover art and of course the opening cinematic
Loved Final Fantasy tactics as well. The job system with it was awesome.
i love that youre taking more sponsors now. not cause i like being force fed things i dont want, but because i've watched you for so long and rarely see them if ever, you deserve the bag.
Strategy RPGs are a unique genre for me because it used to be a favorite genre. I played Vandal Hearts, FF Tactics, Dragon Force, Suikoden Tactics, Front Mission 3, Shining Force and others so much. Dragon Force is one of my favorite games ever, I adore it so much. I’d say around the late 2000s I just stopped playing the genre and never went back for some reason. One day I think I will, I’m hoping for that rumored FF Tactics remake or remaster that was in the Nvidia leaks.
there's gonna be a FFT remake?????!!!!!! oh man i want that
Don’t miss out on “Unicorn Overlord”!
I like this guys videos, I just do, even if it’s nothing I care about. This dude gets hyped and I dig it
Just hearing that Warsong music - spent so much time in this back in the day!
Also loved played Shining Force I and Shining Force II on the same console (Genesis/Megadrive).
Enjoyed Dragonforce for the Sega Saturn in the mid nineties.
Also i came here for nostalgia but looking at what's available for the Switch I might just have to pick up some of the strategy games.
Really cool unique list Johnny. I have preordered unicorn overlord for switch, demo is very good. I am surprised valkyria chronicles didnt make your list! :D I highly recommend tactics ogre reborn too if you have yet to play it. Nice upload as usual mate.
Can't forget Shining Force 1 and 2 for the Genesis! Vandal Hearts was pretty good too. Borrowed that from a guy in my geometry class, and eventually tracked down a used copy years later. Triangle Strategy is one I need to get back to sometime.
Happy to see Diofield Chronicles get some love. A lot of ppl passed it over, but I absolutely loved my time with it
Great stuff!
I just started Triangle Strategy a couple of days ago. What a gem of a game. Tactics Ogre is also already sitting on my shelf to be played next.
Dune 2000 is legendary.
just downloaded a version for that on my pc by Gruntmods
Glad you mentioned this! My PC won't run my disc, but I also have the PS1 version, which I'm planning on playing using my PS5 controller via 8bitdo's PS1/2 adapter.
FF Tactics is my fave strategy game. One of my fave games ever.
Advance Wars was the first game i ever preordered. Was the first strategy game i ever played. Claasic.
I'm playing fire emblem 3 houses as we speak lol loving it ! Congrats on the sponsor dude
I played many, many hours of Final Fantasy Tactics Advance on the GBA, typically in bed until 2-3 in the morning before school ;) One of my favourite strategy games. Other than that I was also obsessed with Railroad Tycoon, Theme Park, Rollercoaster Tycoon and XCOM: Enemy Unknown, all on PC.
Great video as always, a few I've never heard of and the others I've heard from you! Thanks!
I actually never knew FFT was on the PS1, there were so many Japanese games we didn't get here in Ireland and even now some of them just don't reach us...
Love it!
Probably my first strategy game and one I come back to from time to time is a NES cart called GemFire. It's where you could take over your isle from different families however it also has fantasy / medieval/magics plus a nation building events where you collect food and gold and give back to your people. For roughly a 92 game, wonderful! I still go back to it every now and then as childhood nostalgia
A couple of my favs are Jeanne d'Ark on the PSP and Stella Glow on the 3DS. Great list Johnny!
Memory unlocked with:
Final Fantasy Tactics
I remember visiting some friends, had pizza, and lost track of time getting through the campaign.
We took turns, but eventually made it through the journey. It was not easy
Advance Wars:
Oh I remember getting into matches with others. Sometimes rematches, lead to a whole day flying by
Johnny, that's a nice list of your favorite console strategy games but I would say that Triangle Strategy is by far my personal favorite strategy game!
I wake up ever single sunday and look forward to your video. What is a good game to get me started in this genre?
I think this is one of the few types of videos where I find an interesting sponsor and ad segment that is actually good
I’m actually playing Military Madness now for the first time. I love it!
I’m so glad that you put Triangle Strategy and The Diofield Chronicles on the list. Both great games! One of my favorite strategy games of all time is Ogre Battle 64. Definitely give it a shot!
2:06 omg I just started super robot wars T and 30 on switch with import and English Asia text . Basically a massive crossover of mecha anime in one game
Would love to see thoughts on Redemption Reapers strat game on multiple platforms. Great video like always ❤
I'm so glad you brought up Vandal Hearts. It's one of my favorite games of all time. Highly underrated.
Great list, I need to play more SRPGs and I am slowly trying! It's definitely a fun genre!
Shining Force III (My favorite game of all time), Sakura Wars 3, Dragon Force & Front Mission 5.
great video
Into the Breach on the Switch is my favorite strategy jam. Amazing stuff.
Great list! I think Unicorn Overlord will be among the top jrpg strategy for sure. But I also want to add Brigandine Forsena/Runersia. That IP is underrated and unique on its own.
That ending song in vandal hearts hits like a ton of bricks as you learn of the fate of some of your characters. Such a beautiful song, called Burning Sorrow.
One of the few PC games I played extensively back in the day was Warcraft 2, that game had me hooked. Also, a bit more obscure, but I love Yu Yu Hakusho Tournament Tactics on the GBA, had a lot of fun with that one.
Shining Force is basically what got me into strategy games and it's still my go-to when suggesting strategy titles to people new to the genre. Also really like Phantom Brave, Final Fantasy Tactics, the GBA Zone of the Enders, and of course Super Robot Wars, especially since the more recent ones have official English releases for SEA and SRW30 even got a US Steam release
Great video. I'm a huge fan of strategy games. The SD Gundam Games are fantastic. Highly recommend SD Gundam G Generations Cross rays & the Genesis title within that series too. Also the Super Robot Wars games are amazing with Strategy :)
My introduction into strategy games was Eternal Eyes on the PS1. Super cute game!
4:41 that happened to me and the first Fire Emblem. Can we all have a moment of silence for Minerva. A true hero who is not forgotten.
I really love your list! I recently also played through Tactics Ogre Reborn and I think its also a wonderful strategy RPG worthy of a playthrough. The GOAT though is Final Fantasy Tactics!! I played hundreds of hours of this game on the PS1 and loved every second of it! Final Fantasy Tactics desperately needs a remake. I am currently playing through Triangle Strategy for the first time and I am also loving every second of it! The story was written for old Tactics fans from yesteryear and can be appreciated by discerning youngsters of today!
LET’S PUSH FOR JOHNNY TO HIT 500k SUBSCRIBERS BY THE END OF APRIL!!! THANK YOU, JOHNNY!! BEST CHANNEL ON RUclips!!!!!
Its funny the promotion is for Unicorn Overlord because im beyond excited for it coming out!
Ogre Battle 64 is what got me interested in the genre. I may not have played as many games as you listed to claim being a true fan, but I sunk countless hours into OB64. That is why I am so hyped for Unicorn Overlord!
Triangle Strategy definitely got me, love that game and of course three houses they are both my favourite switch games
FF Tactics was amazing. I just got into the fire emblem series last year with Engage and it surprised me for sure. Mario + Rabbids is super fun too
Need a part two where you cover games like Ogre Battle and Shining Force. Maybe Vasteel on tg16
Youre a legend man just watched your gta iv launch video 😂
I absolutely love the shoutout to Super Robot Wars! That series is among my favourite game series of all time. I remember years ago, I spent countless days face glued to youtube staring at the attack animations of the Ps2 games. Then, despite knowing ZERO japanese, I powered through Super Robot Wars W on the NDS and from there I've been playing through this massive series. I was almost KO'd from excitement by the awesome or 2nd Super Robot Wars OG on the PS3 after playing only the handheld games before. I played the HECK out of it!
Also SRW got me into mecha anime which was a gateway to enjoying anime in general haha. This series has done so much for me, haha.
I seriously can't hype the attack animations enough, I could watch them forever! The OG ones especially are a gut punch of pure, concentrated AWESOME!
Dragonforce on the Sega Saturn was another great strategy game in 1996
I need a rom hack of that game with dragonforce music inserted into it.
I loved this game!
Watching an older episode, you said you'd like to do a "couch gaming episode." That's such a great idea, do it!
I have really fond memories of FFTA2, I played it so much back in the day and it's one of my favorites.
Vandal Hearts 1 and 2, Dragon Force 1 and 2, Shining Force 3 and FF Tactics for me. Btw there is a mod for Vandal Hearts 2 to have the same gameplay as the first one.
Johnny you turned me on to Diofield Chronicles and I have a question. Did you finish it? It has a really messed up twist ending if you didn't finish it you need to it's pretty messed up!! Love tho show man you're awesome. And once again thanks for another great recommendation!!
