The Tragic Story in the Background Design of "Bonnibel Bubblegum" - Adventure Time Scenery Analysis

- The gas station in Princess Bubblegum’s story of 800 years ago tells its own tragic tale, if you look closely enough that is. Adventure Time always manages to have detailed and interesting background scenery, but the episode “Bonnibel Bubblegum” might just pack the most depressing tale of the bunch. Environmental storytelling at its finest!

The 'please come back' was a real gut punch...
donwilliam11
"Love didn't conquer all"
That one hit me harder because it implies the writer truly believed in the original phrase until this point. This is a message of ultimate despair...
donwilliam11 yup
It was the little girl who wrote that one. The capitals in odd places isn't something an adult would do.
Yes, that also means she left the "brb" note.
She went looking for her uncle, found his body, and came back to find another.
More like a kick in the nuts.
Ikr
It seems like the backgrounds got more and more detailed as the show went on and that's what has made the show so rewatchable for me.

Good cause it just ended AND I STILL FEEL SAD
You are so right

“Rewatchable.”
THE HEART, THE LOVE, AND DETAIL WASN’T ENOUGH FOR YOU!?
This show gets really deep and sometimes depressing
Rch Flrs sometimes yeah most cartoons are super light hearted it's strange to see such dark themes in a kids show.
Rch Flrs this cartoon has always been dark and depressing, i mean ... it takes place 1000 years after a nuclear war .... just thinking about that is sad
Rch Flrs true, and i
*LOVE* That
Oh, it's worse.
It was the little girl who left the "brb" and "love didn't conquer all" notes.
The uncle left for food, died, the girl left, found him, and returned to find her aunt had been shot by raiders, who stole the last of the food.
Bill lupin wow that makes more sense
This is why I fell in love with Adventure Time, all the stuff in the background that are constant reminders of the tragedy that took place before all of this
its where marcys mom died
@@za_ck yeah it must be around the same area although I wonder why they never showed this side of ooo cause I never seen this deserted sand area unless they did show this area in one episode and I just never saw it

The radiation sign has the spanish way of showing exclamation marks. This could have been a spanish family.
sorry for repeating your comment! Thanks for making me not the only one to notice!
weird coincidence since PB's cousins name means gum in spanish
Why would all the writing be in english then?
Especially when later in this episode we see Bonnie use a sign with German words on it.
But the wrighting on the wall is english
maybe some of the signs are done by bandits or gangsters, they use red marker and speak Spanish, so there are many "BAD", that's the only English they know
The background design in this episode is amazing!
Tom Bashford indeed
Tom Bashford RIGHT he should do more of these
Tom Bashford it's like fallout 4
yup i agree
Tom Bashford at 2 :11 there's writing on the wall that says please come back
the girl probably died from the asbestos, then her uncle spray painted warnings on the wall so that others wouldn't fall to the same fate
The Asbestos sign is likely a reference to the GP-5 Gas Mask filter- not the station itself, due to the skull looking like a gas mask.
it takes years to die from asbestos
I dream of an adventure time universe based "stories of the wasteland"
Each episode would be a random scene with random characters from the adventure time universe
i would die for one
I kinda like the mystery of the apocalypse, i feel if they made a short series/season about the apocalypse it would take away the charm
That series would be filled with death and destruction... actually not quite far from the original but still. I don’t know if modern-day CN would allow as much death would be needed for it.

@@patinpalma694 huh?
Actually , the book that dissect the human's body and muscle part by part might suggest that they were looking at what body part most nutritious to......eat
Another alternative could be that "Love doesn't conquer all" is what he wrote before leaving because he realised that he couldn't take care of hsi niece anymore , so he left and never came back not becaus he couldnt...but because he didn't
TheKalluto ,WHOA...NOW THAT'S A THOUGHT!!! 😨😨😨
Nah. That note was left by the niece, along with the brb note. Sloppy handwriting and poor use of capitals are a kid thing. Contrast with the "please come back" in cursive, presumably the aunt.
"World's best uncle" left for food, and died.
The niece went looking for him, leaving only a note.
She returned to find that her aunt was shot by raiders.
Bill lupin YES
Oh Marceline
A post apocalypse survival game based on adventure Time with serious themes would be pretty cool.
Pretty Dark and Scary, almost make you wish for zombies
One day everything is normal, the other toxic mutants and magical creatures of other dimensions and others that simply lived hidden infest the world while hunting you
Like fallout 3? That would be cool.
Yes, i would pay real money for this happen
i mean fallout
I'd disagree on this interpretation.
The handwriting on the wall is sloppy, and has capitals in odd places. Seems childish.
The posters are all of woman bodybuilders, and they were probably obtained before the mushroom war. It's sort of a niche interest, hard to obtain without modern logistics. Given that the posters are of women, it's likely the aunt was the bodybuilder.
What I think happened: when the food started to run low, the uncle went exploring for more. That's what guys are supposed to do. One day, he didn't come back.
The little girl left to search for him, leaving the note.
The second note is written in cursive, very neatly. It has a feminine feel to it. I think that was the aunt.
The aunt stayed put, in hopes that her niece would return... and died. That's her skull. It's larger than Bonnie's head, clearly an adult's skull. She was probably shot by raiders, stealing the last bits of food. That's why there's a great deal of sand under, and past, the refrigerator- because it was rolled there after a long time had passed with the door open. The raiders simply ripped the door off its hinges.
The niece presumably found her uncle's body, and returned home, to find the mother's body. She left that mournful note, used the refrigerator to seal the station as one would a tomb, then left. She may have strung up the skull outside, not as a warning, but to tell others "nothing but death here." It's a grave marker.
Bill lupin yep my thoughts exactly
I agree with your interpretation, although I was more inclined to think that the little girl was the one interested in bodybuilding. I don't know why, but it seemed more logical ; she was trying to get stronger, to protect her family, and that's why she left to look for... whatever she was looking for outside, but it was probably to save them, be it from a danger or hunger. I more often see kids hanging posters on the walls and being this obsessed with something. To be honest I imagined the girl as a little Susan.
ANYWAY AMAZING BACKGROUND DESIGN
Nej Illjuna yes omg that’s what I been thinking about Susan what if her name is Susan. I been looking at the comments and nobody mentioned Susan I’m not sure if Susan would be alive at this time or maybe a toddler at this age idk but Susan is my only thought I can think of because we know nothing about her

Seth R. my only issue is that there are actual protein stuff so they were serious or at tre least would’ve been slightly jacked instead of just fantasizing
Another possibility is that the place was raided by scavengers while he was away.
That would explain the animal skull dangling in front, the "Love didn't conquer all" writings (which would have been mockingly written by raiders) and the knife buried into the mattress. The fridge was propped against the door to keep them out, but they just came through the windows instead. We see the goblin trying to get a jump of PB, so it very well might have been goblin raiders.
This is just another possibility, the ones in the video make more sense :)
She. The odd capitals and sloppy handwriting means it was likely the child who was out.
:D
Just got a whoooole lot darker.
why no post anymore
I didn't see that skull before... wow.
This is why I love this show so much, those little detail make up for so much!
Great video! Also, Silent Hill music was just perfect for this :D!
Dani Azakura,' Easter eggs' are always in the Land Of Ooo! 😆
Theory Time!
It is always Easter in the Land Of Ooo! :P
The skull is pretty big in comparison to Bonnie's head. I think it was the aunt. The uncle left, died, the kid went looking for him, found the body, and returned to find her aunt had been shot by raiders, who stole the last of the food.
It didn't look that big, from the perspective it's showing, it just look closer than Bonnie. Also, the aunt didn't have hair like that. Or at least that's what I think.
But your theory will always apply until Adventure Time decides to show the truth (if they ever show it... which I highly doubt.)
I think the setting of Adventure Time kind of causes skeletons and skulls to just become more background after a while. Videos like this are a good reminder that there was a life behind it.
Amature scavenging. PB didn't even have any lock-picks for the safe conveniently located behind the counter (which for some reason has a bunch of bottle caps inside).
And why didn't she set up any mines by the entrance? What if raiders were set to spawn as soon as she opened the safe?
But most obvious of all, she didn't specifically order her companion (yak) to wait. In reality, it would have stood in the doorway, making it impossible to leave without attacking it and making it move.
This perspective on the post-apocalypse brought to you by Bethesda Softworks.
Hah, ok. Fallout much.

CJusticeHappen21 The bottle caps are a reference to Fallout
CJusticeHappen21 those damn spawn-in raiders...
amazing work here, this story really affects me........
During ww2, my grandma stayed with her uncle and aunt in a village near Vilnius, then the bombing of Vilnius by Nazi forces began, and she had to run away while her parents stayed in the city and were killed in a mass execution of Jews.
they took the Soviet train to Kazakhstan where they hide in a small village until the end of the war, it was difficult and they were desperately hungry, and her uncle went and searched for food while she ate from the food the villagers gave the cows. unlike in here, her uncle returned, and they eventually immigrated to Israel where she lives up to today, but this story is really similar in a lot of ways, and it really moves me. (excuse my English)
Respect for your grandma and your family.
My sympathies to your grandmother and family. Nobody should have to live through such a tragedy.

FairlyFickle Like Beautopia
The Uncle, a little crazy from the end of the world, decides that if he and his Niece are going to survive the wastes, they need some mad-ripped bods and gets them both working out. The engine is for weight-lifting. While foraging for food, the Uncle finds the mutative river that runs through the someday Bubblegum Kingdom and, realizing its potential, takes some home and locks it in the fridge. While Niece sleeps, he spikes the protein powder they use to buff up with small amounts of the mutative chemical.
Sadly, the Uncle is getting sick. He was exposed to the asbestos in the walls at some point and while he kept her Niece from getting into it with his warnings, he himself has developed cancer. He stops taking the protein powder, reasoning that his Niece will have a better chance to survive if she takes it herself. One day he sets out to find food and never comes home. The Niece, with nothing but tainted protein powder and time, gradually buffs up to crazy size and--finally realizing her Uncle isn't coming back--sets out into the wastes to live as a female Lord Humongous, carving a kingdom for herself from the savage lands.
Then one day, something in her changes. Maybe she finds the body of her Uncle in a cave with graffiti sharing his apologies and worries for her. Maybe she encounters the growing Candy Kingdom and PBG succeeds in talking her down from her usual violence. Maybe she's just tired of living like a Mad Max character. She turns her kingdom into a more civilized realm of bodybuilding afficionados and renames herself Muscle Princess.

I think you should have also talked about the downed F-117 Nighthawk that Bonnie passes is related to the gas station group. The writing on it is probably from the same group that wrote on the gas station, and has a similar tone. The uncle who found the bomber would have felt probably an understandable hate for the people who flew it. He wrote "Complicit?" and "NOW WHAT?" to express how the bombers were probably related to the cause of the end of the world. The bomber was complicit to the mushroom war, and if so, what good did its mission do? All it did was leave his family starving in a wasteland. Now what?
i strongly believe that US was involved during *The Great Mushroom War* and i knew the F-117 Nighthawk was fielded in the 80s and up to 2000s when they replaced with F-22 Raptor
The number 117 follows me everywhere.
He shouldn't have wasted his time writing that when he could have been scavenging
Maxim Gun It wouldn't take long.
@James Furey I see so that's what it is then, thanks for the response bro.
Fuck man... why you have to make me feel sad?
Anyways, great analysis!
Nah, he missed things.
The capitals in odd places lead me to think those letters were left by the girl. The uncle left looking for food, she went after him later, found his body, and returned home to find her aunt shot to death by raiders stealing the last of the food. The deep sand under the refrigerator shows the door had been ripped off and left open for some time before the fridge was moved there. (Also, the aunt was the bodybuilder... all the posters were of women, and bodybuilding exercises are harmful to children.)
So yeah, that bit about the uncle leaving that message? Nah. It was the girl. "Love didn't conquer all." Seems like something an emotionally crushed child would write, don't it?
*MY GOD!* that's overwhelming, and that's the magic of animation, you can tell an entire life without a single word. And the shows that have as much content without directly telling it, that understand it and uses animation as it's maximum, as Adventure Time has done since the first day, are my favorites ;D
Who else though that the gas station was the one that marciline and her mom stayed at, I thought the skull was her mom's but it's a different gas's station 👻🤓
yep same. that's why I came back to this vid
Ayyy, same here.
Yeah, Marcy's mom died at a gas station too, probably. A similar story, and there were probably countless of others like them.
That’s what I thought to
The amount of effort this show puts into visual storytelling is freaking amazing
I think it went something like this:
There was a family living in the gas station. One was obsessed with bodybuilding, while another fixed up the engines. (Or maybe they were the same person?) The family consisted of 3 people: One with the 'Please come back' handwriting, one with the 'Back soon!' handwriting, and, finally, the one with the 'Love didn't conquer all' handwriting, which is also seen on the crashed military airship. The family was running out of food, so someone, likely the father, left to gather more food, and didn't come back. He was likely eaten/killed by the mutated wildlife. Days passed, and the two remaining family members had run out of food. This was around the time the magnetic letters were placed on the fridge, and when 'Please come back' was written. More time passed, and, eventually, another family member died of starvation. The remaining human mourned their lost relative, and eventually became emotionally unstable as a result of their only family being gone. They then wrote the 'Love didn't conquer all' note, because, well, love couldn't conquer this problem... Love couldn't bring them food, and love couldn't bring back loved ones who passed away.. Eventually, they left the gas station, because waiting around in there alone was pointless. They came across the airship, looking for food, which is why we see the exact same handwriting on it. He wrote it because, indirectly, the jets took part in the war that took the their family members away from them. (Mushroom war --> Climate change --> Starvation.) They either found more humans and went out with them, or died somewhere nearby the ship.
2:03 A sticker on the drawer has Matthew on it from the episode "The Mountain"
Titans JoJo maybe that's where the uncle went
This is the reason I watch your videos.
Adventure time is sitting on such a gold mine for a prequel movie/series showing events that happens after/during the war
can i just say the Silent Hill music was a great touch to such a thought wrenching video.
wow wow wow wow! good stuff! i hadnt noticed it on my first watch, but as soon as you showed the clip i immediately noticed the "back soon! xoxo" and "please come back". you delving even deeper into the details of these short shots was incredible. really gives perspective into how much effort goes into the less noticed aspects of adventure time. just a beautiful, haunting analysis overall. also, loved the silent hill music! i thought i recognized it haha.
Also... the hazard symbol on the top of the fridge is accompanied by 02 exclamation points, one is upside-down, Spanish language style: ¡! Indicating that people living there after the mushroom war had Spanish as vernacular language.
I just realized after all this time the great mushroom war wasn’t about actual mushrooms but the mushroom cloud formed by nukes in a nuclear war. This is a dark realization about the show and my background data on all the stuff in the show.

But it's not the WHOLE reason. Magic predates the apocalypse so honestly I LOVE the blend of Sci fi and fantasy that this world created.

One of the things about Adventure Time that I fell in love with is stuff like this, the broken remains of a past society left behind, and it scares me, but also gives me hope. Dystopia, death, and destruction on this level have always been one of my worst fears, yet through all, life finds a way.
It just gets deeper and darker, I'm sad that this show is going to end
guys did you know that this show is really deep and dark? its so deep. it certainly caters to my teenage to adult interests by being so dark and deep like adults are.
Adventure time is the world's greatest example of cerebus syndrome... Except im not even sure if its that, because the shows always had hints of darkness hasnt it?
I dunno.. honestly i like it, i do. but it's more of a "fans" problem than the show itself. i think its a problem with most animated shows nowadays, in fact. it just gets so tiresome to hear people go on about how much deepness these shows have, in what i guess is a subconscious attempt to justify the viewing of a children's show? which is fine to begin with? like "look! its actually not just a childrens show its really heady and talks about death!".. he's got silent hill music on the background for heaven's sake. and so the more i grow old, the more i want to distance myself from this teenage-y tryhard kind of stuff and just have a quirky jolly ol time. not saying there isnt space for deepness and darkness either, a balance is good, again, just the way people like to talk about it. probably just curmudgeonly old me.
Natasha Jones yup
Dude this is an instance of very competent and appreciable scene design. No reason to strawman.
dont worry dude this is the only Game Theory-esque video that Elk has.... every other video self-justifies its analysis. this one was for fun clearly. especially cos the family ended up being a relatively important part of the ep despite not being there at all. i do agree that we dont need stuff like this to justify watching cartoons. adventure time is a lot of fun. i liked Always Bmo Closing and smashing baby finns with hammers.
my favourite joke is that adventure time "sugarcoats the apocalypse", which is what bubblegum *literally* does when she builds the Candy Town and then Kingdom.
What really gets me is that this could have been the same place Marcelines mother died in when she was working on the motorcycle in obsidian.

It's nice to see a small nudge wink to the horror and tragedy that the mushroom war and it's fallout brought to people, without goofy cartoon monsters and the like. A grim reminder that the entirety of the adventure time world is built upon the corpses of all who came before.

This is still my favourite adventure time set lore. Thank you for opening it so beutifully.
This symbolizes one of my greatest weakness is the loop of doing something like waiting with small chances of your rewards, Futurama Fries dog waited 11 years for him, more childish example finding dory her parents waited and waited when if she hadn't remembered the rhyme the would have eventually died. This is one of My most tragic weaknesses and the fact this examples worse case scenario and how you described it is making me sob as I type.
THANK you for talking about this, i know this video is mad old but stuff like this really makes ya 🤔
When I watched Adventure Time as a kid, I thought the skulls and other trinkets that were in the scenery were just little details to make the show look cool. This video opened my eyes, and now I realize the reasoning behind the background details are far deeper.

This was a very complete and surprisingly responsible bit of speculation, real good, thank you.
The further you dig into this show, the more dark and scary it actually is. All the cutesy characters and silly antics are a cover for a dark past filled with death and destruction and these scenes really highlight that!
Holy hell, man. There’s so much in this show, but you wrung out every last ounce of emotion in this scene. Thank you. I’ve never watch your channel before, but this one video convinced me to subscribe.

This whole episode was just so depressing. Any themes about familial death or falling apart always gets to me, man. Especially with the uncle and niece, since I'm the uncle of two nieces.
In my English class my Professor asked about our favorite horror movie/tv shows I said I liked Adventure time. Everyone laughed even my professor who said he is aware of the show believing it to be far from horror I referenced the details in this video after that he was so convinced he said he might watch the show.
These kinds of videos are so important for artists who didn't see the same things you saw but who also want to create immersive environments for their viewers. Thank you.

Shit, man...I would love to see an ep revolving around the family. Hell, I'd settle for a fanfic.
I never even thought of putting the background elements into a story. But thanks to you I'll keep my eyes a little bit more open to spot them. Thank you
I think the refrigerator was used as the doors and the "biohazard" sign was a reminder of the mutagenic radiation outside the gas station.
OMG the silent hill songs in the background made this video even more perfect!
Two this that I really like together. Well done buddy.
I noticed that in one of the windows there are a few toy soldiers standing, i think that the girl put them there in hopes that it would scare thugs and other threats
1. Goddamn. That narrative is genuinely upsetting. Props to the Adventure Time team for creating such a rich history to a location only seen once in the series!
2. Dude, this has gotta be a series. There is so much to work with! What an awesome video!
Has anyone noticed that the gas station was heavily influenced by the Red Rocket Stop in the game Fallout 4? I mean, it even has a replica of the weapon work bench!
It might just be the post-apocalyptic gas station but this video feels a lot like those vids of people trying to put together the stories for unmarked locations in fallout games from all the little details
I'm going to miss this show
I'm so happy to have found your channel now that the show ended, it's like AT is still alive in someway
This is some Fallout 4 level design.
Nah,new Vegas level
yup the Atmosphere and the Dark gritty story and feel to it
that's an insult
this is Fallout level design, not bethesda
Wow! Great analizing man. The scenes of PB forging around the gas station are quick and it's easy to miss all these details. All I got really from first watching is that a family probably lived here for awhile. Didn't really think about all the depressing details of their demise 😢
I would die for an Adventure Time series based on the Mushroom war with some human soldiers in a tank surviving in the war and with a sad ending
Good old Adventure times. I can't believe it was 4years since last time I saw this video
How come I’ve just found your videos..they’re amazing oh my god
damn dark man.
Wow. I never knew so much could be in the background of an episode...
Also, your voice is so soothing!
A lot of these good tv shows are good because of the plot, but what also appears is the darkness and world building.
Splatoon also has the effect of this. It’s obvious the people making splatoon spent lots of time just world building. Same with adventure time. You can really tell when the writers didn’t spend any time world building.
That story is so sad 😢😿 great job of thinking of the background details making up this story
