Legendary Cozy Powell on Drums. My favorite Drummer. The things you said about Bob Daisley as a Bassist count to Cozy Powell as a drummer as well, except that it was from the 70s all the way to the 90's. He did countless amazing Drum tracks and this one is at the top of em. Cozy and his fills are pretty often ''over the top'' like you said, its what he does. I mean He even got an album called Over the Top loll (random fun fact Cliff Burton owned Cozy Powell's over the top album). I especially love the fill Cozy does at 10:01 such a unique and classic Cozy fill. Yes it is Ritchie Blackmore on guitar here, he literally owns Rainbow, he made Rainbow and is the only staying member through the years. Just like Ian Paice never left Deep Purple. And finally someone mentioned how Funky the rhythm section is. I never see people calling it out. But not only is it funky but the song sounds middle eastern too, which is why I love it so much. In context of the lyrics it makes sense, and the intro and outro make sense because of that too. I personally prefer the Album or the remastered version, because the mixing and stuff on this music video is pretty weird. And btw the outro with the strings is a little longer on the Album. The score for this song is definitely fair, Stargazer is no question a better song. I still wished you would've reacted to the studio version of Stargazer, the live version sucked and is not even close or comparable to the studio version. Have you listened to the studio version on your own time?

Rainbows first album they were known as Ritchie Blackmores Rainbow. He started the band after he left Deep Purple and is the only member still in the band. There's alot to like in the RJD era.

LOVE Dio and Rainbow! Ooh, I wish you'd do "Catch the Rainbow" live in Munich 1977! A calm but very beautiful and super atmospheric song

Just a little trivia here - Bob Daisley played bass for Gary Moore on his European tours. His song - "Empty Rooms" - is a masterpiece, and Tommy Johansson's cover/tribute is fucking incredible (based on this live performance), with Tommy doing Daisley's extended bass solo (I remember your rather snide comment about Tommy just plucking the bass on "Burning Heart"). Frankly, this is one of Tommy's finest covers - no power metal, no goofy faces , no ultra high vocals - he pays a true tribute to one of the greats that left us too soon, allowing his guitar to speak and sing for him. Here it is (I don't know how, with all the Johansson covers you've reacted to, that you have missed this amazing song: ruclips.net/video/5qkQwnJdgpo/видео.html

You or say that, before Ritchie, Rainbow was known as Elf. Most of the members of Elf joined Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow.

I hate to tell you this, but Ritchie Blackmore played bass guitar on this song in the studio. He played bass guitar on 5 songs on this lp. The reason why he was looking for a new bassist. He could not find anyone good. He fired poor jimmy Bain for Partying to much supposedly. Got Bob Daisley out of a band called Widow Maker.

Like Sergei Rachmaninoff said : " Music is enough for a lifetime, but lifetime is not enough for music".
There's nothing dated or expired, in all forms of art, as long as its good.
To the song now, probably, and is quite understandable, some people don't know Middle Eastern patterns. But this is definetely not funk.

Ritchie Blackmore is the only member in every Rainbow incarnation - it's HIS Band - so, YES, this is Ritchie Blackmore...
The "Drummer" was Cozy Powell - a true Legend - You may know some of his instrumental HITS from his solo projects like "Dance with the Devil" < not many drummers had single hits... When he played with the Phenomenon supergroup they didn't list all his former bands but simply called him "Master of Rock Drumming" ;-) < he was even more than Bob Daisley everywhere - from the Jeff Beck Group over Rainbow to Whitesnake and Black Sabbath and more > all you loved about "Stargazer" came from the collaboration of Cozy Powell, Dio and Blackmore (and you should listen to the original version, not this Grandfather's version you reacted to). Gates of Babylon is a (last) masterpiece from the last Rainbow album with Dio < this version was some TV-performance with only RJD singing live and the rest coming from tape - so it sounded a little weird sometimes - a bad mix with the echoe-effect on the too loud vocals - the proper studio-version sounds much more coherent. Thanx for doing this reaction - I enjoy your expert musician insights very much < as always.
Off topic: I know you like the Warning > they have just released three new professional shot LIVE videos (Animosity, Enter Sandman & Disciple) < absolutely amazing, they have become better on stage AGAIN - you were right when you said they would do this.

For me my early appreciation of rock was Deep Purple, leading to Rainbow, leading to Paice Ashton and Lord, to name a few. My poor parents, they must of known this song off by heart as it was my favourite track on Long Live Rock & Roll.
I agree with you about re-mastering. I have mentioned before about this modern style of 'clipping' the audio so that every instrument and vocal is exactly on the beat in perfect time. The result is a digital computer produced sound overall. There is not any soul to the music. As you say, it is a similar thing with remastering. It for me is totally ironic that if you want to hear the correct sound of a modern recording, you either have to listen to it from certain streaming services or buy the vinyl. Unbelievable!
I always enjoyed the rhythm of the song but until you pointed it out, had not associated it as funk. Now I have visions of Bootsy Collins playing the bass line. 😀

Yeah, I haven't heard a lot of "remasters" that didn't ruin the song's "character", as you say, David. The possibilities are intriguing, though, as I found listening to no less than three remasters of Black Sabbath's, "Dirty Women"! hahaha...great song...Good show, David!

Not sure if it was this album or the previous where Blackmore took over some bass parts because the actual bass player couldn’t keep up.

I know you react to LOVEBITES too, and you can hear some of this legendary song in their Judgement Day...especially in the post-chorus. Well, that's what the first thing I thought about when I heard Judgement Day...I think LOVEBITES is paying a tribute to Rainbow. The voice of Ronnie James Dio....

You have to do a reaction to "Stargazer". I know you already did one for that song but that was of a live version with a different singer. You have to listen to the original album version with Ronnie on lead vocals. No disrespect to the other singers who have been with Rainbow, but that song cannot do that song justice except for Ronnie 🤘.

I think the keyboard player is very much underrated, also I'm sure Dio sings slightly sharp in parts of this (not so easy to pick up compared to flat but my hearing is annoyingly hyper sensitive...) nevertheless an epic song, my favourite from Rainbow!

    • @luamoliveira3467
      @luamoliveira3467 7 месяцев назад

No, Dio is not singing flat and he is singing with his full chest voice and a perfect command of modern open throat technique, his sound is completely open in the highs and sounding extremely natural, resonant and full-bodied.
