It would be heartbreaking not to attend your wife’s funeral! What we have done when my father-in-law (ex elder but active JW) passed away, we were in charge of the funeral itself, we did it our way! We would not allow the witnesses to have their memorial talk in the funeral home. They did that afterwards in the kingdom hall and we did not attend that service for the same reason. The funeral itself was lovely, a lot of memories, photos and a gathering with true friends, no strings attached! Don’t let the witnesses take charge of something so valuable.

I would probably go to my beautiful wife Nicole,s jw funeral, just to wake up the jws how unloving they are. It was the jw funeral of a 78 yo pioneer sister that woke me up in 2015 when the elders pulled me aside and told me not to talk to her 40+ yo dissfellowshipped daughter, I ignored their unloving advice. I,d say at Nicole's funeral,, Nicole loved me regardless of what I believed in ,and never shunned me ,all you brothers and sisters can learn from her example ,,,I was a jw but I,m now a Militant Agnostic ,I don't know and neither do you ,, ,,So please stop acting as if you do ,have the answers to life's mysteries dear brothers and sisters,,❤❤❤

Just so you know. Every single person who leaves goes through "Dark Nights Of The Soul." Do what you can to reverse it. A stage of life at the end, is called "Integrity vs. Despair." To avoid despair, try to correct as much as you can while you are alive. Even if you can't, "Intent" is just as important as actually undoing irreversible damage.

I am POMO. Stepdad died…a jw. The service was terrible because it didn’t focus on him, it almost dismissed his death and focussed the funeral on shoving scriptures down our throats. No coffin in the Kingdom Hall, he was cremated. But last year my dad died, he was never a jw. His funeral was beautiful, it was in the cemetery chapel but we covered the religious symbols. it was about dads life, I played the music that he loved and felt more closure from dads funeral.
When mother dies, I’ll attend but not out of love but respect that she carried me for 9 months. What jw dint realise is we dint have to just have their funeral, we can attend their service then have a private PROPER funeral where you won’t be shunned.
And with death, I was with my dad when he passed, it was peaceful and calm. It wasn’t traumatic for him. I dint know where he is, I just say he has gone home to his mum and dad….wherever that may be.

Thanks Lillywildflower for your comment, Your Dad's funeral sounded wonderful, covering the religious symbols great idea ,you must miss him terribly, but his in your heart full of precious memories. My Mum died in 1962 aged 30 when I was 1 yo. I often wonder if I would get on with her ,because you can't pick your family ,you can only pick your friends. Your step fathers Watchtower funeral, sounded dreadful, did they offer free home Bible studies at the end of the service ? Shameful,, I tell people,, I,m a Millitant Agnostic ,,I don,t know and neither do you !!!!! I hate when people make out they have all the answers ,but that use to be me ,when I was a jw . @@justinporter458 funerals should be about the person, celebrate them and showcase who they were. I wanted the cross covered because dad went to a Catholic school and was abused by the brothers there so there was no way I would compromise on that. Once I became Pomo I found my voice for speaking up about religion. Dad would have loved my sass simply because I remembered that detail of his service…. He wouldn’t have cared if I’d forgotten. He appreciated the tiny gestures so much more than mass e fanfare. Dad was a musician, loved family and history so we shared that. I miss him terribly. He was a gentle and kind man. I have a lot of peace knowing I held his hand until the end which is what he did for his mum. I promised him I would do the same. It was a privilege. I said to him that the moment he lets go of my hand, he will be holding his mums hand again. It helps to think of him being reunited with family instead of thinking of him leaving us.
We do NOT go to funerals just to hear about the bible. We go to commemorate the life of someone. Stepdad died during Covid lockdowns so we were limited with numbers… but then, mum moved the service to a hotel so she could have 100 people instead of 10. She WANTED a crowd. I don’t understand that. There were only immediate family who aren’t jw…. Stepdads sons, sister and nephews, nieces…..so 10 people. The other 90 were jw (or Pomo for my husband and adult children). No bible studies offered but my brothers sang the jw songs because they thought they had to 😂. The elder didn’t even offer his condolences to them but it was their dad that died. It showed how arrogant and insensitive they can be. I was furious and accidentally called out that he should offer condolences to my brothers.
I respect there are religious elements in some funerals but even my sister in laws grandmother had a nicer funeral…. She was Catholic. The service told stories about her, how she was born in Italy and during ww2 the Nazis came to take her sewing machine but she demanded paperwork. When they returned, they took her machine but didn’t realise she switched it with her old machine, so she hit to keep her new sewing machine. She brought it to Australia when she immigrated just after the war. We were laughing at the stories and it was nice to hear things we during already know. We all sang You’ll Never Walk Alone and the church sounded beautiful because it’s a song everyone knows. It was powerful.
So create every funeral for the living but to commemorate the dead. Regardless of religion, there is SO much more to a person than their bible.

Lillywildflower so sad your Dad was molested by so called God fearing men ,one of the main reasons I don't believe in a All Loving God ,any loving parent would protect their children from Pedophiles, why doesn't God take away the priests evil desires towards children since Jesus died to take away the sins of the world . Either God is not all loving ,all powerful or simply doesn't exist. Also there are Homosexual and Pedophiles in the animal kingdom .eg. Bonobo Apes . Why did God create them ? ....I hope you are reunited with your Dad in the afterlife ,I just don't know and neither does anyone else ,all we have is precious memories and hope ❤❤❤

@@justinporter458 thank you. Que sera sera hey…. I have beautiful memories of dad and the future will be what it will be. If there is no reunification, it won’t matter because I will be dead anyway. But I will still be with him even if there is no conscious thought.
I agree, I find it difficult to comprehend why any religion condones abuse - because if they condemn it, the would report it and remove the perpetrators. In dads case, his parents didn’t realise… his dad was an alcoholic after losing three brothers during ww1 and ww2 and himself being on a ship bombed in Western Australia. I think it was too much for him. Dad was born during ww2.
I believe gender and sexuality is not one or the other, they are a spectrum which is why I was labelled a tomboy as a child…. I preferred to climb trees, wear jeans instead of skirts and play with trucks and cars but I am a heterosexual. I had a massive issue with the belief that homosexuality was wrong because when they are two consenting adults, what they do in their bedroom is their business….not mine.

I believe in trying to be good, kind people with no hidden agenda but that is the old “do unto others” people quote from the bible. I think there is a distinct divide between god and religion. Religion teaches hate…. If you aren’t one of us, you are the enemy, you will die, you are not good enough. But the bible says good is love. Those two things contradict each other.
There is nowhere in the bible that says we need to be in a religion. The bible teaches us about being a good person, but more importantly, it teaches us how to have a relationship with god.
The bible of the jw has been changed a few times. I remember the reference bible of the 1980s and told to throw our old bibles away….. why? Did they not want us comparing scriptures? Then a new version in 2013? THAT version had some BAD changes.
I don’t understand….. if Adam gave us sin….. but Jesus is the redeemer…..and the price sin pays is death… then our death means we have paid for our sin so if the paradise us real, we should live forever. But why is Satan going to be locked away for 1000 years and re-released? The resurrected have paid for their sin, why would they need to be tested again? If they are alive again, they would know his is real…. No conversion necessary. Humans dream…. God could give them a dream during resurrection so they know what’s happening but they will be perfect. Perfect doesn’t make mistakes or have flaws.
If you are perfect, even WITH free choice, you wouldn’t make bad choices 🍎🍏🐍…. so we’re Adam and Eve really perfect? Or are they just characters in a book?

Hi Justin! You know wer'e about the same age. I can see how you are torn between loyaties to family and religion. I always say blood is thicker than religion. We have come to many of the same conclusions about not knowing what lays beyond. Saying we don't know, is as honest as you can get. We may not like it, I mean, everyone wants a happy ending to the story, but at least there's no lies or wishful thinking. I had a freind who recently died. We grew up together as witnesses. I left the J dubs early in life and he followed many years later. He was however, as you say, a POMI ( phisically out but mentally still in.) He told me that he was going to go back and I warned him not to. I tried that once, and got soft shunned for an eternity. I think he was hoping for things to go back to the way they used to be. He commited suicide. You can see in the pictures leading up to his death, how unhappy he was. His mother requested me to go to his funeral. The one who always called me bad association. The one who told me to please stay away from him. I didn't go! I tried to make a comment on the online obituary and the witnesses kept taking down the comments they felt didn't suit them. I talked to other winesesses that I knew and non witnesses who attened and they basically told me his funeral was mostly an adverisment for the Watchtower! I can't beleive the amount of control they had. Such hypocrates saying nice things about him, after they treated him like shit. I've missed so many weddings and funerals cuz of this cult, I can't beleive they still have an effect on me this late in life.

Gday Tyrone, Your friend was in a sad situation, Believing in something and not practicing the cult rules fully ,I've heard many stories of ,pomi,s going back to the cult just to see their family again ,and dissociating or fading soon after Because they never treat you the same ever again ,once bad always bad ,that's their motto. My Father suicided in 1969 when I was 8 ,and my big sister suicided in 1994 when I was 33 and my sister was 36 , even though they weren't religious but Agnostic and Atheists, I feel Watchtower is truly evil because they produce suicidel thoughts in me ,especially the year after I was baptised, I never felt good enough and in nearly all ex jw videos I've watched, they say the same thing ,Watchtower breeds suicidel thoughts and that's why I fight the Watchtower and make videos ,thanks again Tyrone for commenting ❤

with the shunning, it seems like when your 'product' is gullibility and wishful thinking your need to have some kind of company policy to alienate the people who see that it's all a scam... they see the emperor has no clothes on, if you sell imaginary clothes, you don't want the people who can't help but speak up about it to have a voice.
on the subject of funerals, my mother was catholic, I'm an atheist, we agreed to disagree, she once told me I was going to go to hell, I was 6 or 7 years old and got scared like hell about that, but for the rest religion was never really an issue. She died 5 years ago, I called the priest to give her the last rites, and I went to talk to the priest for the funeral, I asked him to read from the bible the story of the Good Samaritan... it's funny, because it fit her well, but now I realise probably the Samaritan is in catholic hell now, because he was a happy honest decent human being and he didn't really know jesus ...
If I were you, I'd go to that funeral, although women live longer, so I wouldn't worry about that.

It,s still OK to turn Satan into a legless lizard even though in Job ch 1 Satan told God he,d been walking about on the Earth not slithering. Sorry about your wife, that sounds bad for you. The cult will focus on the GB if you did attend any funeral, it's NEVER about the person, always goes back to them. I understand why so many who leave stop believing in God, and with the born again mad ideas it's enough to put anyone off. Religion causes a lot of problems, but the Bible alone (and especially if you leave the JW's out of it) does have some interesting points that I have researched for decades and can't find answers in the secular world.
