I lived in Oklahoma for 8 years! And I’ve seen my share of Tornadoes 🌪 Definitely scary at times and at others, you just get used to it. The key IMO was always knowing the real difference between “A alert or warning”. I could look outside and know we had a good chance of a funnel getting ready to form. I believe when we were all sending our pictures in,that one of mine was a photo taken by my daughter in the passenger seat rushing to get to shelters in Broken Arrow. That was definitely the biggest I’ve ever seen face to face! Awesome video!

A lot of storm chasers were actually caught inside of this tornado's windfield. In general, chasers try to maintain a distance of 1-2 miles from a tornado that's moving away from them, which works pretty well when the tornado *isn't* 2.7 miles wide. At that immense width, the El Reno tornado caught a lot of very experienced people by surprise, which is how it took the life of Tim and Paul Samaras. It was a grey swan event, something known to be possible but also known to be highly unlikely, and wasn't easy to plan for ahead of time.

I remember that day, it kept switching directions so we never really new if it would hit us or not, our storm shelter flooded too so we didn’t have anywhere to go the times it did try and head our way, thankfully it didn’t, but some weren’t so lucky. RIP
Good god, those extra vortexes are insane to witness. Just spawning, disappearing, and spawning again so quickly. Vicious. Edit: I edited this 3 times cause I’m an idiot.
What was it that caused this one to be such a devastating storm? It is crazy how sometimes the NWS SPC can outline areas for long range, devastating tornadoes and it my or may not materialize. Was it just the “perfect mix of conditions” for such a deadly tornado that day? It goes without saying, an unexpected southerly turn, given the loss of the team of chasers trapped in this storm. May they never be forgotten. But what else can we learn from this mega Wedge? *Never stop chasing! Edited for spelling

Deadman walking
LOL
Deadman walking
deadman walking
almost every tornado that starts multi-vortex goes wedge
Likely because they need to be of sufficiently large spatial scale to grow and may already be a wedge as they form
In 10 seconds of life it was already a wedge, and in 10 seconds it went from a mile to 2.6 miles wide
Man they were lucky being that close to that mess of a tornado, that thing was popping arms and legs down everywhere.

Can tornados form without starting as a EF0?
Yes The Bridge Creek Moore 1999 F5 started as a F2 [EF2]
Pretty sure Joplin started as an ef-3 or 4. It’s quite literally dropped out of the sky as a wedge in a span of seconds
