His explanation shows the disdain that his leader has for the media and the public. How is a one-way, top-down communication through mann ki baat equivalent to a press conference. There's a difference between why he's doing what he's doing and wheather what he's doing is the right thing to do.
I think Modi is right in not holding press conference because a large part of the media has been hostile to him because he is guilty in their court of biased opinion even though all courts have exonerated him of any wrongdoing doing.

Press conferences have become a waste of time in India, with so many journalists asking questions, sometimes repeating in different ways. As Swapan says, there are other more effective means of communication which Modi adopts. He gives one on one interviews.
