  • This video is part 1 (of 3) in the How to Whittle a Simple Cactus - Complete Beginner Whittling Lesson series. This is the second project in the Complete Beginner Whittling Lesson series. As a lesson (as opposed to a tutorial) this video will take time to explain how and why to complete each step and will pause periodically to specifically teach new skills. By the end of the series, you will have carved a simple cactus.
By the end of this video you will be able to:
    1) Apply your knowledge of push cuts and stop cuts to a new project.
Series Description: Welcome to the Complete Beginner Whittling Lessons Series! This series is intended for people who are completely new to whittling and looking for advice on how to get started. It starts with a series of four videos about what equipment and materials are needed for whittling and then there will be a series of projects that will teach the basics of whittling while completing specific projects.
Note that this series focuses on what I would call hobby whittling using dedicated whittling knives and wood that are specifically designed for whittling as a hobby. We will not focus on found wood carving, knives that are not specifically dedicated to whittling, spoon carving, bushcraft or other forms of whittling and woodcarving in this series.

I’m excited!! Am a called the cactus nerd. I am a subscriber and I read the article in WCI and now have a step by step video. Thank you for showing us beginners this project walk through. I’m marking my wood now but Java a 1x1x4 so I am taking that into account.

Thank you for making videos! I saw you had some of these in WCI and it’s super cool to have a video to go off from as well. I remember when I first started the lessons in a book left we scratching my head sometimes (it’s gotten easier with experience to figure it out from the books/magazines).

Thanks! This one is simplified from the ones in WCI, but if you start with this, it should help with doing those too.

Nice three part tutorial. I'm just starting out so to save on money I'm using scrap pine instead of basswood because I can get it for free. Any advice on using pine instead of basswood? I'm using the flexcut knife you reviewed and it did a good job I thought on the pine but I don't seem to be able to make as deep a cut as you do. Could it be because I'm using pine or just beginner skills?

Carving pine should be ok in general. As long as the wood doesn't feel too hard or difficult to carve I wouldn't worry too much about it. It definitely does take practice to make deep cuts. Over time you develop both hand strength and also a feel for the knife and wood to be able to make deeper cuts more comfortably.

Omg this is so hard. I just got my 1st whittling kit & thought this would be a good 1st project. had to use a 4 inch wood bc I didn’t have 3 inch. And that was impossible to hold correctly and cut correctly. I had to do one wrong. I have size small hands. My hands hurt so bad. It’s so hard to make a flat cut. I think I messed up my knife from twisting so I tried to strop it and I think I made it even more dull.

And also my wood keeps peeling off before I finish the cut
