  • Yesterday in our Teatime at the Ritz I talked about the many ways that older women tend to become invisible as we age. The older I become the more I am determined not to fade into the background and accept our society’s view of me that I have little or nothing to contribute.
Today in the second part of a conversation about boosting our confidence, I look at why we may feel unconfident in certain situations. I also give you 5 exercises that you might want to do which are guaranteed to raise your self esteem and self confidence.

"Talk to yourself like you would to someone you love".....good quote. Our middle daughter, Krystle, would respond every time she heard me say "oh, you silly woman" when I did something I didn't mean to......Mum you are not silly. Yet we say these things, even though I recall reading when having our babies, that when a child does something that is 'wrong/a mistake/silly' you don't tell them they are silly, but that the thing they did was silly/wrong/etc, NOT them. It's easy to tell someone/yourself they are stupid for doing such & such, but it isn't them, it is often the action, because they/I didn't think it through. :)

Thank you Tricia. I loved the story about your winning the competition. I bet the people next to you didn't ignore you after that. I'm 67 and have started jogging. Not too much but enough to make me work hard. I don't go anywhere without makeup.

Listening to what you said about the boss who gave you permission to buy a pair of bigger boots reminded me of my 'best boss' who really build up my confidence in a demanding role. Perhaps a future topic might be about people who do this or as I call them 'energy givers' and an the other end of the spectrum, the energy sappers'. One group always fill the people around them with positivity and the others just drain the energy of people around them.

AGAIN!! I am going to listen to this over and over. I thought I had a lot of confidence. But why then did your line from the book, talk to yourself like you love your self make tears come to my eyes. I will love myself thanks to you Tricia. You have made me better and I am grateful👏

I am so blessed to see you on my news feed. You are just what is needed. I feel like it was about 55 years old I felt like I started to soften and back to a corner and just wait. You talk about invisible and wow that is what I felt since then. The thing I am really struggling with is smartness. I can't get a handle that God made me just like He want's me and I am good just the way I am. I feel like I am not smart feeling what I say or do etc. I will be turning 59 towards the end of the month and I am ready to be who I am and be bolder and with kindness. Thank you for the awareness of this with being older and it not being just in my mind.

Hi Tricia, I really enjoyed your talk on self-esteem today. I felt you were talking directly to me and that you knew me intimately. So much I could relate to. My insecurities all came to the fore and I have resolved to deal with them, one step at a time, so the older me can totally embrace and enjoy life. You have pushed (encouraged) me to be my best self. I cannot thank you enough. Jenny x

Your talk about self esteem was so valuable to me Tricia. I lost my husband of 32 years last year. We were very happy and I am devastated and finding it hard to get through it. This virus has robbed me of the support groups and bereavement counselling that I found invaluable. Part of that counselling was all about self love and when something so appalling like the death of a much loved spouse happens your self esteem can plummet, mine certainly has. I am a retired teacher, have had 5 children and am 68. I have loved your beauty products and buy them regularly. Making myself look good had helped me since my husbands death, but I miss his support and reassurance because although people think I'm confident I'm not! Over this weekend I will certainly do your suggested exercises. Thankyou for the advice.

I am so sorry to hear of your bereavement Valerie. I no longer have anyone in my life who tells me that I look nice when I get 'dolled up' to go out. Having someone who believes in you is such a wonderful support but I have learnt that being kind to yourself (as you would a dear friend) is the best way to stay positive and happy. It's taken me quite a long time but I got there in the end, as I am sure you will too. Tx

I can't tell you how much today (and yesterday's) segments have meant to me. Tricia, it's like you were hiding behind my eyeballs ... seeing/feeling my true self. Thank you so much for your insight.

So impressed with your talks, thank you. I started yoga a few years ago (aged 64) and so much of that is about self love and self care, taking time for yourself. Also as you said be careful what you say or think about yourself because you are listening! xx Just wondering if I'm brave enough to use my partner's hair clippers and go for a pixie cut, if it works out okay I'll post a photo xx

Such a lovely wise woman you are Trisha. Thank you so much for your videos especially these confidence boosters. You are a terrific role model for all us oldies. And your hair is such a lovely colour - do you mind me asking what colour your hair was in your younger days? One more thing, I don’t always remember to follow this advice but I should - I look at your expression through this video and I am struck by how you smile even when you aren’t actually smiling if you know what I mean! A smile costs nothing and it is such a lovely thing to receive.

Hi Moira - Thankyou! My hair was a mid mousey brown. Very uninspiring it's now mostly grey but still brow at the front so i have grey highlights added. Tx

Lovely video. The confidence issue is something that I have sruggled with for a long time. As I am getting older I feel more confident and at ease with myself. Thank God.
You are a very interesting person and you are doing a very good job.
Keep up with the good work. Have a lovely weekend.
