    Good video. I've coached for a while and my favorite phrase for defense is "Play the man, not the ball". It's similar to your golden rule. Use this to position them towards the outside and not the center of the field. To that point, watch their hips more than the ball. You can let the ball past you but don't let them past you and you'll be between them and their ball. Also, as a defender, get physical. The player with their shoulder in front, closest to the ball, wins so don't be afraid to muscle for position.
    Also, no "stabbing" or over reaching in with your foot like the defender does at 2:41. Don't over-commit on a ball and allow their body to pass you. It's harder to get past someone than it is to stop them so a defender should have the advantage, but if you're reaching in you reduce your success rate to probably less than 50% and allow people to take uninterrupted shots on goals.
    Lastly, to the point of knowing a players preferred foot; We all have a dominate foot and we first learn to use the inside of our foot and this builds habits, especially when pressured. These habits stick around through high school soccer and even into college ball. For most players age 3-18, a right footer will try to go left. They may fake or juke a lot before they do it, but as they make their move it will be to their left and your right. Keep your weight balanced to be able to get your right foot out quickly to stop it.

    • @WithmeVerissimusWhostoned
      @WithmeVerissimusWhostoned 3 года назад +25

      actually, the defender had a perfect opportunity to end it right there at 2:38 while the attacker was balancing on the left foot and doing bs with his right one. All that the defender had to do at that moment was to read the flow, lean on his right foot and propel his left one towards the ball pushing it behind the attacker. Instead he hesitated to take that opportunity and eventually backed off a bit giving the attacker more space to move and make a play.
      A defender who can dance is superior to an attacker who can dribble. For dancing teaches you way more extreme, sharper moves and balance shifts than any dribble ever will, I would know 'cause I do both football and streetdance, and I'm yet to meet an attacker who can dribble his way thru me. \o/

    I've realized that as a defender instead of "shooting" your foot towards the ball and getting megged, just stand the attacker up. Then when he or she goes for a running then you either shield or "shoot" the ball. By doing so, it reduces the attacker's chances of going past you.

    most people mistaken that defenders has all to do with physical, tackles, blocks and being the 'cave man'. Infact, imo, defender is more on mentality, which its more important for one to be able to read the game, read the opponent, study the game flow (you are the foundation of your back bone/ core player, you help him control them tempo), dirty/hard jobs ie intimidate your opponent, fouls, trap, handcheck...etc. do remember that your main task is not taking the ball away from opponent, its leaving them nothing to produce even with the ball. Closing down opponent and minimise their options by study their movement/ preferred foot/ direction, and most importantly communication at the back, you cant do these alone, some one got to lead and some one got to follow. And finally, always remained calm and steady, and when the timing is there, you enrage like a beast to cut in/ tackle/ header/ block, then enjoy the moment feeling like scoring a goal

    Guys I’ll give a tip since I’ve been playing soccer most of my life as a wing man. Try to visualize what might happen in a 2v1 situation. And also when defending a player keep your eyes on the ball and keep a bit of distance so that you have time to react to the attackers moves, and also try to take the ball from them so your pressuring them into your comfort zone ( what I mean by this is when your keeping your distance a bit go in for an attack and then it’s gonna probably cause them to make a reaction so you could get back into your proper stance and your keeping your distance). I hope this helps 😊

    It is also very important that, as quickly as you can, assess your most likely one-on-one opponents. You must get a sense of their speed and adjust your own capabilities accordingly, especially the distance between you and the opposing player.

    You know, a simple saying I've learnt is
    You can let the attacker through
    You can let the ball through
    But never, ever let both through at once

    Idk why but every sport I'm into I believe in strong defense but soccer is the only sport I play where I struggle with defense. Soccer gives me a different feeling than football, basketball, or track. I'm just super offensive

    Don’t know much about soccer much less teaching it hence why I’m here. My son is a decent defender for his first year of soccer U8. He loves this sport. his thing as a defender is he likes to rip the ball away with his foot from other team. I’m not sure if it’s a bad habit and I should correct him or let him run with it and see what his mind comes up with.

    its so interesting to me how wrong youth soccer in the US was when developing players, because the standard method of defending was to initiate the tackle so strikers don't have time to make a play. this was also like 20 years ago. am always gonna teach my kids to contain and the striker and wait for them to make a mistake before you dive in. great vid coach!

    What I've found successful defending versus two players and the give and go is marking backward then taking a quick step toward the passer, to make him think I'm going for him, but quickly retreating into the lane toward the other player, and I've picked off many passes that way. It takes a lot of balance because there are quick directional changes but if timed correctly you can defend that next pass. Just as forwards have moves and fakes on the ball you can give them a fake to make them get rid of the ball and then you go to where they're going to put it. If he keeps it you still have him in front of you to defend the space. My goal was to just try and get them to commit or make a bad touch then I can continue going in but with the first intention of covering the next pass back. If he bumbles I continue my fake step into him. If he has control, I'm already ready to cover the lane. I started as a forward so thinking like a forward also helps anticipate what type of move the player will make if you force him one way; if I was him what would I do? Then go there before he can.
