"Are you shirtless or are you wearing someone else's chest"
Commentary more terrifying than the actual game congrats guys
It brings out their inner serial killer.
I think she was speaking of herself?
00:55 "You're not allowed to play this like a run-and-gun-shooter!"
The fact that MIKE is telling this to ANDY shows that Cthulhu's influence is powerful!
Yep, Jane was there too :P
Andy: I'm basically unspookable
Also Andy: AAAAAAAAHHHHH A SEAGULL
Your boat here was literally called the Charon... I'm sure it's fine you guys, don't read into it.
There is such a thing as TOO MANY literary allusions, it turns out
I've watched 3 different playthroughs of this game, and Andy's the first to recognize The King In Yellow.
But none of them recognized that the white, low-res diagram on the ceiling was the human transmutation alchemy circle from Fullmetal Alchemist.
@@brianwestley6985 you mean the transmutation circle??
Imagine living in a world heavily inspired by and full of references to someone elses works of fiction.. Like every time I say I'm going to Tesco the people watching my life are like "woah he said Tesco we all remember what happened there in the original story's"
Yeah; honestly any pauses to add emphasis to everyday words makes me paranoid of just such a thing
I thought about this when the guy mentioned being fond of yellow. My brain started screaming "THE KING IN YELLOW!!"
3:19 "My cousin Throgmorton, the skateboarder"
I heard "disembowel" instead of disembark and honestly I wouldn't be that surprised if Jane was asking about disembowelling people for Cthulhu

Oxbox, kicking in a door: Did someone say COSMIC TENTACLE MONSTER?
I'm sure Nerascus will rock up in the sinking city at any moment to save them!
So is this place Prudence's idea of heaven?
Twas Prudence , in the alleway, with the giant mystic pearl!
Case closed
Blaming her for everything. For all we know it was Merliwen or Eggbert. Besides, no one would suspect Dob.
How'd she get it off of Katie (and I mean that literally; that thing was jammed on there good, DOB)
The police arrested Cthulhu this morning but people believe he is going to go free on insanity charges.
49:10 . Strange how Andy equates the goodness of something with how easy it is to kill it...
"Are you shirtless or wearing someone else's chest?" ...Man if I had a dollar for every time someone asked me that.
If you would have more then 0 dollars i'm staying far away from you, with my minigun pointing in you general direction (and first i need to buy one so can you just stay in one place for now?) :P
@@kallasantysanty6092 lol -high fives for making me laugh-
Jane: he's after your hat
Andy: *points gun at bird
Me: that's seems like a normal reaction...
...for Andy
We've all seen Andy play Red Dead 2, we know how he is about clothing
@@kamenraider1175 that was my original thought
Throgmorton is actually a Lovecraft deep cut - the guy you meet there is the son, later insane, of an explorer who had a child with the queen of a race of intelligent apes. His grandson is the protagonist in a Lovecraft story.
It might have been a great-grandfather, and it could also be the princess rather than the queen, I can’t remember.
I recognised the reference and was immediately more interested in this game than I had been, its good to see the writers casting a wider net through the Mythos. Lovecraft is more than just tentacles and fish people, game devs.
I think that's "Facts Concerning the Late Arthur Jermyn and His Family".
@@NimbleTack Yeah that's the one. It's another variant on HPLs obsession with heredity and ancestry, with some bonus racism towards African people. Heres hoping we meet someone possessed by a Yith, or a Mi-Go, and it's not all just Gross Monster People.
@@edwardgurney1694 Also the fact that the one group of cultist were talking about Dagon is probably linked to the Flood. Short version: Dagon hates Cthulhu and all "Star Spawn". Cthulhu seemingly has a weakness to drowning or something like that. So Dagon inundates places with his worshipers.
@@marhawkman303 Is that from some of the 'Expanded Universe'? Sounds like Derleth.
Side quest- Eric Zann needs you to go do a fetch quest for him; he'd go himself but he's busy holding off horrors from beyond space with his viole.
"Hi! I have come to leave letters in your room as is the custom."
"All the tracks from my new album" XD XD XD
Stepping off the boat: A very real everyday threat to us island dwellers.
I laughed at the scuttling rat-crab because it kinda looks like my sphynx cat
Andy's reaction to the seagull's swooping down was priceless! 😂
Seaguls - they atack you like cthulhu but from the sky ... nowhere is save :P
You say Flood and I say alien-precursor-parasite monster.
Jane having a mini breakdown on seeing the hermit rat is my favourite moment inthis video.
Jane: Down into the sanity-sucking murder basement.
Isn't this what Jane is usually telling her next hapless victim; at gunpoint one supposes?
Brave of you to assume that Jane would use something as mundane as a firearm to threaten someone with
@@kamen.rider.decade It is a firearm, but it's made from metal forged in the heart of a dead star from a black world, and well, I'm still trying to figure out how to translate the instructions for making the bullets...
Jane's methods of persuasion would make you beg to be threatened with something as quick as a gun
"Fisk Brännvin" is "Fish Vodka" or "Fish Akvavit" in swedish. While we scandies do like to season our akvavit like we season our pickled herring, that would be a terrible product.
Agreed.
I am an American studying Swedish. I interpreted the sign as "fish brandy", so I was close.
Am I correct in thinking that "brännvin" more literally translates to "wine that burns"... as a similar sentiment to the native American "fire water"?
I never knew the option Button was officially called the burger button this changes everything
My friend who works in UX and UI design keeps referring to "burger menus" and I'll never get used to it
Ahhhh please play more of this it's so interesting & you guys have the best commentary 😂
Haven't seen the full episode yet, but read the title and my brain automatically read it in Andy's yelling voice.
"Why's everyone here so racist?"
it's the Lovecraft effect, y'all
We need more of this! It is like an OXventure with more detective work!
I am going to use the word ratiocination every day, now.
The ship our game's hero was on was the Cyclops. The USS Cyclops disappeared in the Bermuda Triangle on it's way back from Brazil to Baltimore, my city, in March 1918. No trace of it or any of it's 306 man crew was ever seen again.
"You're not allowed to play this like a run and gun shooter!" Oh my God, Mike's a Cthulu!
ˌra-tē-ˌō-sə-ˈnā-shən
Can we get a vlog visit to Andy's Mind Palace? It must be an amazing place.
Fun fact about Lovecraft, he found maths too much to handle mentally, so his works often use the idea of non-euclidean geometry as something eldritch, when it's just lines on a curve.
Beware the floor tentacles of the jumbo squid
"I'm basically unspookable". Andy's last words.
Who says "Help! Help!" to someone with whom they are already in conversation? That's just weird 😂
46:10 This small statue of a man killing a bull with a knife could be a reference to ancient god Mithras from one of the cases in the same developer's game "Sherlock Holmes: Crimes and Punishments"! Love you, OutsideXbox, you are a great channel and great guys!😁😁😁✌️✌️✌️
Also I think Devil's Reef was the name of the place that was defiling Innsmouth in The Shadow over Innsmouth.
It was where old Captain Obed Marsh dropped the "lead thingumajig" (according to Zadoc Allen, noted Methuselan inebriate) that initially summoned the first representatives of the Y'ha-nthlei Deep Ones to Innsmouth, and subsequently a location where the land-bound and "returned" Innsmouth folk would gather. The Narrator also mentions it frequently in the story as a "brooding" or "malignant" island. But in the story it was just "Devil Reef," no possessive.
coming soon from OxBox studios, "It's a Fair Cop, Cthulhu" - here's hoping it's a musical
Thanks for a meaty look a this fishy game. :) I am reminded of Murdered: Soul Suspect, though hopefully this is less janky than that.
I do love this game, the combat is iffy at best but the clue and puzzle solving is fantastic and I love the story
Andy:" Im unspookable! "
Seagull :" wanna bet? "
Andy, have you seen “The Salvation” by chance? It features your (and my!) favorite things... set in the Wild West, starring none other than our favorite Hannibal, Mads Mikkelsen! It’s actually pretty good!
I'm intrigued by all the quests. There's so many of them. Do you think you'll do a video where you do all the quests that unlock on of the outfits?
Sinking City gameplay? FOR ONE HOUR - FROM OXBOX NO LESS? Honestly how dare you!
In case anyone was curious, Jane should definitely know Reed's voice...he's voiced in some big games somewhat more recently (when compared to this point in time). Since this video, Doug Cockle has voiced Robert Nightingale in Alan Wake 2 and Bhaal in Baldur's Gate 3...but he's better known for his gruff voice issuing forth from none other than Geralt of Rivia.
Nice look at the game, guys! I love how this game is all like, "Yeah, we all know you're here for the Lovecraft, so we're not even bothering with subtlety. Ape-men, fish-men, cultists all out there in the open from minute one! Also your patron is clearly a fan of the King In Yellow, so there's that." It's a cool-looking world, though, and I like how the characters react realistically to some of Reed's dumber comments. And I rather like the detective aspect. I mean, everything with the flashbacks and such is very close to how Call of Cthulhu The Game did ITS detecting, but I like how you can piece the clues together in your head to make deductions, and come to false conclusions. It's neat. Also like that your character can just step off a boat and promptly nearly drown. XD Good stuff.
10:10 Maybe he's born with it.
Maybe it's Innsmouth.
A Poe quote in a Lovecraft game? Is that allowed? I feel like that's not allowed.
Ah my cousin Throckmorton, the skateboarder
Man, I'd love to see more of this from you guys! The commentary is making this game
32:48 ohh no! there is the other half of the let's play XD
I loving this game and the let's play, hope you can carry on with more.
A hermit crab inside the corpse of a dead rat?
Well I think we just found the new star of my nightmares.
Now just think what would 10 of them do to a human corpse :P Or a cow ... yea a crab-zombie cow would rock your dreams :P
Plot twist: it's a dead cat, not a dead rat! ... That doesn't make it any better tbh
@@samwoodier8653 Do NOT show that to Ellen!! :)
@@samwoodier8653 Better? It makes it so much worse!
Will you guys ever play this again? A full play through would be cool to watch.
Ah yes, as written, the one weakness of Cthulhu the early 20th century handgun.
*I THOUGHT IT WAS THANOS IN* *THUMBNAIL LOL*
...and he doesn't feel so good.
Detective Jane Douglas: More blood, Blood blood blood!!
Channeling Prudence when she was helping Dob build an Orphanage.
With all the references to the Yellow King littered around the game, there hastur be more to that guy.
3:27 I had a Professor Throckmorton at uni one semester. His class was intense.
This game isn't just referencing the well-known Lovecraft stories- there's the Color Out of Space, Facts Concerning the Late Arthur Jermyn and His Family, The Lurking Fear- and the USS Cyclops was a real ship that went missing in the Bermuda Triangle. Honestly, the amount of research and care that went into creating this world is amazing.
I see Hugh Laurie more than Ryan Gosling, if Hugh was extremely hungover
Yes! That's who I see too!
Cthulhu in the Mind Palace with the candlestick. Hashtag Cthulhu.
You guys are so good at making a play through fun!
“Ch’thulhu is like ‘it’s a fair cop’” LOL
23:41 I’m getting a Agent 47 vibe from the dudes voice 🤷🏾♀️
"I think we need another month or two before we can release this, but a bit more work and I think we've got a winner."
"Noo, it must be released to the masses before the moon falls below the seventh plane of Ng'aignoth!!!"

" Stand back from me you creeping worm! The Lord Zstylzhemghi has commanded and none shall bar my righteous path!"
*Upload Complete*
"...dammit Dan, I'm gonna have to talk to HR again."
19:25: They didn't count on you, Jill, the master of unlocking
Mike: "Cthulhu did it"
Cthulhu: "I would have gotten away with it; if it weren't for those meddling kids and their mind powers"
And also Dagon and his cult of fish-men....
Andy taught me a new word. I'm going to reciprocate and teach Corazon a new word. Barratry. The legal term for the unlawful breach of duty on the part of a ship's master or crew that results in injury to the ship's owner.
Jane's right the face isn't quite an "Andy Face".
I love that you guys got the King in Yellow reference. Have you seen the yellow sign?
4:10 jump scare seagull! Scariest thing EVER.
5:30 the jungle VIP.
It seems to be 50/50 on the map quest objective mechanic.
Some enjoy personally figuring out the map puzzles.
Some wish for the traditional mapping system.
"How bizarre" was Mike's opinion.
Cthulhu done it! We'll need one hell of a lawyer to make the charges stick. Call Pheonix Wright!
You say Sinking City: A Cthulhu's Nightmare, I say Mantorok Sanity's Requiem: A man can dream.
Mike: How can there be an underworld if everything's underwater? 🤣
Don't unpack! You'll get bedbugs and the bedbugs will just be squids with crabs inside!
@outsidexbox Fisk Brännvin (though that would actually be Fiskbrännvin in one word) means fish brandy in swedish, which, for the record, sounds gross. Or maybe they are refering to brännvin (brandy) made by a person or company named Fisk, but honestly, bearing in mind the theme and atmosphere of this game, it could very well be the former. Brännvin is a form of swedish brandy usually made from wormwood or potatoes. Happy fishmas guys!
Andy's Savage gaming logic is hilarious. Something subtly offends him....
Solution?: Unload entire repertoire of ammo on them. Even if it's just a seagull in the very beginning of the game where he may need every bit of his ammo for Lovecraftian horrors 😆
Sees the option to change clothes
Me: so half the playthrough will be outfit picking huh
Jane: Come at me Dad!
I like how the detective vision is similar too return of the obra dinn
There is a Witcher easter egg in this game. I was hoping you'd come across it. :-D
Is it the allgod? I bet it's the allgod.
@@skidmark2704 Let's say it is someone nasty who Geralt cannot completely defeat even in the best possible ending.
@@NisansaDdS Is it everyone's favorite deal making mirror merchant?
@@jefferycrouse5654 Yes., it is!
The Easter egg isn't that Charles Reed is voiced by Geralt's VA (also did Bhaal from BG3 and Robert Nightingale in Alan Wake 2)?
The protagonist is definitely the freakiest thing in Oakmont. Everyone else feels like they belong there and are minding their own business when along comes a stranger and muddles everyone’s day up with psychic detecting and mind palaces
Andy: The King in Yellow is alright.
Jane: ...Really?
Me: NO! 🤪
9:20 there is no hand in five card stud poker that can be five cards short of a full house. The closest you can be is three cards short.
Please do a full playthrough of this!!!!
I'm so glad that "Throgmorten" is as strange a name to English people. I've only ever seen it in The Chronicles of Chrestomanci.
Trying to think of a sane normal thing, like pizza!8:35
Oh no what have i done
This looks like if Red Dead Redemption 2 was set in the 30s
OOOH learnt a new word too: Ratiocination (turns out andy said it correctly): it's EXACTLY what the game implies is going on in the main characters head with all that "mind palace" stuff. Given it's roots and use in the past, it seems to imply a very DELIBERATE and calculated train of though and reasoning.
"Kay"-thulu? More like Baethulu!
...I'll see myself out.
The freakiest thing in Oakmont? Definitely the upsetting doll in the background of the menu screens.
DOB!! DONT KILL THE FISH PEOPLE!!
What kind of PI would start seeing hallucinations from someone with their face smashed in? That's a weekly occurrence in that line of work
38:40 Did I hear Andy sing just a tiny bit of Rock the Boat by the Hues Corporation? A man of taste as always.
Yes
You know, there are more horrifying creatures than Cthulhu, right? He’s probably one of the least insanity-inducing out of the bunch.
That's why he is the face and chef of PR department for them :P
can't help but notice that those shells look like they're infused with tiberium...
