What province are you in? I shop at the same store in Ontario and we’re easily paying double that for a similar shop.
Those tofu blocks here are almost $4 each. The wildbrine kimchi is almost $10 where I shop. I’m so confused how you did this.

    • @taneesha.greaves
      @taneesha.greaves  Год назад +2

The wildbrine kimchi was just under $10 and the tofu I think was on sale (I think $1.99) but similar price usually. I started switching the medium or soft tofu because it’s cheaper than extra firm; I just cook it longer to firm it up. I’m in Manitoba.
Those two items were the most expensive items I got thought lol.

You mostly bought canned goods and veggies, no name brand nonetheless.
If you bought some meat, lunch snacks for your kids, milk, eggs, cheese, sandwich meat etc it would’ve been $100 after bag 1. You chose cheaper items and things that were probably on sale. But I’m also in AB which is one of the most expensive provinces in Canada.

What about the cost of starches which were not included?
I know you don’t eat meat, but surely you don’t eat only tofu and vegetables.
If this is what you needed with an already stocked pantry it makes sense.
But can you calculate the cost of two weeks worth of lentils/beans/eggs/any other proteins or meat substitutes you’re eating.
    Also oil,spices,rice,potatoes, dairy/dairy substitutes.
The reality is 100$ can maybe get you through a week of eating with a well rounded diet if you’re a savvy shopper.
It’s going to cost more than that for vegetarians/vegans to reach nutrition goals and maintenance calories for a healthy adult.
The majority of your 100$ was spent on perishables.
The volume is low enough to eat all of that without wasting it before it starts to rot for sure, but you’re not making it two weeks with the same zucchini, tomatoes, and celery you bought on day 1 even if it’s rationed.
I feel like people neglect to cover affording the privilege of time to go to the grocery store several times a week as well.
Vegetables and fruits aren’t just expensive, you can’t buy them once a week and expect them to not be wasted in a lot of cases (onions, beets, radishes and potato’s can last a long time admittedly)
But tomatoes go bad after 7-10 days (sometimes less if it’s more humid or kept on the counter which tastes better) canned tomatoes are only good for soups/stews and pasta dishes (basically anyway) and your haul doesn’t include any ingredients to cook those meals.
Some meats can be frozen at least.
You stick chicken and ground beef maybe even uncut steaks when they’re on sale.
But the rest of the fresh produce is basically a weekly, if not 2-3 times weekly assignment to procure.
And buying rice/lentils/grains/potatoes in bulk is expensive and impossible for some to transport home.
So the cost of buying smaller quantities adds up very quickly.
I know this is more like a challenge type of thing to see how far you can go with 100$, but the framing here is a bit deceiving.
This is 2 weeks of stick maintenance for meals you already have most of the ingredients to prepare at home.
I went out to get the basics for curry and the spices alone cost me 50$
The chicken cost me 25$ and the coconut milk cost me 6$
That’s not including the garlic, ginger, onions, and tomatoes I had at home already.
The butter Or the burlap sack of rice I had in my pantry.
It’s true I don’t have to buy spices every time I make curry, but the initial cost makes meals like that impossible for a lot of people.
So simply showing the maintenance stock isn’t what I’d call full transparency.
