I loved this reaction. You were on point, Jack. I must say that this song is very personal and means a lot to Mariah. She said that 8th grade was one of the lowest points in her life as a young girl. The year before she had dyed her hair orange by mistake and shaved her eyebrows. At school, children always made fun of her by saying that she only had three t-shirts. Back then, her mom chose to live in a predominantly white neighborhood where people had more money than them and Mariah never felt she fit in. Even before her parents getting divorced, they also lived in black neighborhood as a mixed couple (her mom is white an her father is black), so they also had problems bacause of that, there was never a safe place. Besides that, Mariah has said that 8th grade is also about one of those feelings we have at school when we like somebody else but the person doesn't and that's the end of the world. She said she had this melancholy feeling while writing the song!

Literally period. The fact that she was able to create a song/this album damn near 30 years into her career, and it still sounds fresh and new and with the time??? She's crazy talented. 8th Grade is one of my favorite songs periodtt, and I'm SO happy you reacted to it cuz I've been requesting it 🥺🥺🥺. I think you would truly enjoy Clown of the Charmbracelet album. I have always loved the lyrics and flow she has on that track. It was basically her response to Eminem’s claims of a physical relationship with her.

This is my favorite song from Mariah. I’ve been loving and listening to her since she debuted so that says a lot considering her discography. There is a layer to this song that I cannot identify but it gives me goosebumps and brings a tear of pure fascination.
