He used his ego as a defense when he was asked for a simple request of a refund. It's not that big of a deal to refund an unhappy customer who hasn't consumed the product they were unhappy with on sight. From what he said he also owns the place, and he could have offered it to someone else at a discount to not waste his money or whatever he was thinking. TL:DR he was acting smug and egotistical for an encounter that could have ended on the request of a refund and these two wouldn't have seen each other ever again.
