- Bought this because it is evergreen, 8 ft tall and has blue flowers. Potentially to replace the Viburnum, if and when it dies. The Viburnum is 20 years old! Want to keep this California Lilac as a back up and have it a reasonable size when it is needed. For now, planting it in a bigger pot to help it get through Winter. While it is a zone 7 to 9, it can only survive our zone 7 winter if planted in ground. I should have a zone 5 plant if kept in a container. I am pushing this but cannot resist having an evergreen with blue flowers in my yard but do not have any other spot unless my Viburnum goes.
