They say the eyes are the gateway to the soul, but it may very well be that for Robert Bresson human hands provided that link. A wonderful compilation of Bresson moments and images that remind me why he is one of my favorites.
Few people might realize it, but the reason why hands are something that appear a lot in Bresson's movies is that the connection between the spaces is made by hands. Bresson is making cinema not only an art that explores sight and hearing but also touch
It is also crucial for his metaphysics: the question of will (in a very catholic undestanding) and its consequences is what shapes Bresson's filmography - hands and doors
I follow this account on Instagram, and i saw this video for the first time like 4 years ago! I cant believe how beautiful is it. I love it, honestly gives me a very particular vibe. Thanks!
poetcomic1 Au hasard, Balthazar for me. The young couple on the bench outside. But Pickpocket is brilliant as well. Got to see all his movies all over again! :)
Sometimes a soften touchings can hurt you or your hearth. Because people always hide your intention you believe them all time but they are deciever lier...like my ex love. Now the sense of his touching, in last times, break my heart untill ı forget him but ı live him and ı am dying because of him. M.💔
He didn't "like" them. It was all one of his ways to express human thoughts, emotions, intentions, actions and the consequences of such actions; instead of recurring to the tired, obvious, stupid way of conveying those things through artificial, melodramatic, manipulative, redundant, sentimental mediums such as dialogues, wailings, cries, shouts, tears by artificial actors a great number of movies have employed and continue to do.
There's even a mysterious scene in Mouchette where the main character is holding up her hand for no apparent reason while having a conversation with someone.
I've seen ~7 Bresson films. It's safe to say I am not a fan. But I still love many of the details in his films, such as these reoccurring shots of hands in his work. If he only allowed more boiling performances, rather than keeping everything at room temperature regardless of context, then Au Hasard Balthazar would probably be one of my favorite films. If you believe in auteurs above all other lines of thought, I can see how others don't care how he managed performances in his films. But I think it's rather silly, personally.
“Build your film on white, on silence and on stillness.” - Robert Bresson
Tarantino: You had me at "on white", alright, but then you lost me.
Im an art student and this is probably the best hand references I"ve ever seen...
Transitions from 2:18 to 2:23 are perfect.
theft of virtue..
Amazing work! I love Bresson, the music is perfect too, very fitting (Schubert's Piano Sonata No. 20 Andantino)
I was wondering the name of the piece..thank you so much
it was used in au hasard balthazar so makes sense that its fitting haha

you have got to hand it to him haven't you .
Like Bergman and the imposition of time....
This superb compilation shows just how Bresson is so universally adored and influenced by other directors.
Purity, simplicity, humanity, poetry.
An absolute awesome footage.. Thank you Kogonada and the Criterion Collection. The greatest hommage possible.
Sono anni che lo guardo e lo riguardo ed ogni volta è un'intensa carezza all'anima.

Thats beautiful.
It is also crucial for his metaphysics: the question of will (in a very catholic undestanding) and its consequences is what shapes Bresson's filmography - hands and doors
The greatest Bresson 'hands' moment is in Four Nights of a Dreamer, as Marthe examines her body in the mirror to a very exotic song.
Maravilloso... La existencia del ser humano vista desde las manos. Su cotidianidad, sus emociones, sus conflictos. Maravilloso
The best video I have seen in my entire life
eh ben j'te plains ma pauvre
Simplement magnifique! Eternel Bresson.
Very well done, I enjoyed this collection of hands by Bresson.
Brilliantly compiled.
Awesome montage, love that similar themes are edited together too (violence, thieving, etc)!
Nunca pensé hasta que punto nuestras manos podian expresar tantas emociones...Gracias por estos poemas dedicados a nuestras manos...
Las manos hablan un montón. Más de lo que creemos. Son delatoras inconfesas.
i came across this video again months later and i liked it again very much.
a fascinating and powerful collection. thank you for sharing this. ... the eyes and the hands: most expressive of the human soul.

“I am the way, the truth, and the life.”
Hands of Bresson, feet of Bunuel.
lips of wiazemsky
**BRESSON** used feet a lot as well; *perhaps* even more than *Buñuel* Himself.
@@grill6411 With Once Upon a Time in Hollywood releasing, Tarantino has officially taken the "feet" award.

Amazing. I love this. Though it is missing my favourite Bresson hands shot from Four Nights of a Dreamer (as she hand dances in the mirror)
I appreciate your art
''Die Malerei lehrte mich, nicht schöne Bilder zu gestalten, sondern notwendige.'' Bresson
**TOTAL, ABSOLUTE, UTTER, MAGNIFICENT, WONDROUS, AWE-INSPIRING, BREATHTAKING GREATNESS AND PERFECTION** Thank You, @criterioncollection!!!

Tender is the night and Monsieur Bresson.
Sublime.
What a great job this video!
The ultimate hands are the four minute train station scene in Pickpocket.
absolutely no. Un condamné à mort s'est échappé.
poetcomic1 Au hasard, Balthazar for me. The young couple on the bench outside.
But Pickpocket is brilliant as well.
Got to see all his movies all over again! :)
