In football, its almost the same. 120 minutes of field play only to be decided by a series of kicks at an extremely close distances to which luck herself wouldn't help at all. But it is what it is, the team that should've played better on the field didn't convert and ended up is a bad position. I wouldn't say that bullet armageddon is dumb, in fact I support it but it comes at a cost of breaking the standard regulations to successfully crown a winner.

At this level letting them play usually ends up in draws so a blitz or bullet game sounds sensible as they won't be as accurate

For those who didn't watch the streaming: Giri basically panicked and lost 30 seconds after black Na3. Furthermore he did a mess around the b6 square making all the pieces falling down and had to spend many seconds to readjust them before he could hit the clock.

Giri did not actually lose on time. There were some missing moves at the end most likely because Giri knocked down some pieces, which did not allow the board to properly register the moves after the fact. After winning the piece Giri blundered immediately due to time trouble. If you see the chesscom live broadcast the black pawn was physically on g2, which makes black winning. Giri resigned the game with around 10 seconds left on the clock.

To lose on time in a 5 minute game after a 14 day tournament seems cheap, getting close to just flipping a coin. Giri, like he did during the tournament, had chances to win. I do think they need to revisit this format. When pieces start getting knocked over in haste it looks unprofessional and out of character for the very nature of chess. I would say it should be done on a virtual board, but misclicks or mismoves might be worse.

I've never seen someone blow so many crushing positions. Giri had a game like that against Nepo in the Candidates last winter where he had Nepo on the ropes, he was in prep forever and then I think Nepo actually ended up beating him in that game. He's had so many games where his prep has him at a huge advantage and then he draws. Dude is better at prep than even Carlsen or Fabi I think, but those two are much better at converting.

Dear Agamator, I feel like you need to mention that at 4:12 the entire reason Giri lost is because after Foreest's knight to A3 attacking Giri's Queen, Giri spent 30 seconds deciding to push his pawn to C6 when all he had to do was make a move, ANY MOVE , to race to time control. Both chess24.com and chess.com had live streams where the commentators were screaming "MOVE! MOVE WHAT ARE YOU DOING GIRI JUST MAKE A MOVE OH MY GOD!" GIri just kind of got sucked into a wormhole of thought and lost any awareness of what was happening in the moment. His entire loss can be traced to that one 30 second blunder. HE didn't blunder on position, he blundered on time. It is sad for Giri, but on the other hand, I am really happy for Foreest. Tis when got him to 2700 ration, won the tournament, and blossomed his entire career !

I don't understand the blunders by either players. It's obvious c6 doesn't work, as it is that, though even more obvious, that Rxf4 is a blunder.
It's worth clarifying though that these Armageddons, blitz or even rapid games are ridiculous in a classical tournament. They can just play classical games until one of them wins, or one should just use the highest performance in the tournament for those of the top two scorers. To end a classical tournament with the methods used just wastes the value of all the careful hard work that went into the classical games.

In an eventful final phase, the moves were made so fast that the digital board stopped recording them after move 58. For online viewers, it seemed that Giri lost time in a winning position.
In reality, four more moves were made and Giri ended up being the last to make a mistake. In the final position, he was unable to prevent his opponent from promoting a pawn and, while leaning back in disbelief, he let his watch set zero.
Carlsen also thought that Giri had wasted time in position 58 and made a joke on Twitter, but Giri did not miss the opportunity and also responded by referring to the fact that he was not in the final dispute🤣🤣

Even in this last game, he was obviously aiming for a draw. But somehow found himself in a winning position, so he resigned by way of "out of time".
