Man Ive had a nasty recurring rotator cuff injury for years now due to repetitive motion. I already went to doctors, therapists and even watched top physical therapists here in RUclips. But sadly my injury did not completely go away. The impingement remained. Until, I found this video. Bro, I don't know if you're also a licensed OT or PT, but damn those were the most effective exercises I've ever done! Thanks! I hope you could post something on tennis elbow injury too!

How is your shoulder feeling now? Just got a similar injury in my shoulder after 2 days of getting back into punching the bag after 10 years not boxing
When this injury happened to me I couldn’t move my arm my shoulder was locked and in a few seconds it went back to normal but I still get those injuries when I use a lot of strength I don’t know why
CèsarX210 YT It sounds like you may have had a subluxation, which is where your shoulder has come out of socket partially. You might see a physical therapist to regain your strength
When this injury happened to me it almost felt like a rubber band snapping I can even hear it it almost felt like I was hearing it inside my body I still feel it as we speak even though I'm taking a full month off I thought there was nothing I can do when it came to fixing it I'm really glad I found this video because all the other videos online don't really give you much help this is something I'm going to start practicing plus it really started with having the vertical hook or vertical fist hook position which is such a common position but I think that that fist position is bad for a couple of reasons one I messed up my shoulder and two you're pretty much cuffing a person and even can break your finger knuckles if you're in a real fight I think calm down or even thumb slightly down is better just I guess an opinion but I'm also going to try everything else that's in this video thank you and by the way I love all of your other stuff 👍🔥🏆
Thank you for such a detailed response. Yes if you throw a hook with thumb up, it should be used as a fishhook or knuckle smack. The problem with the thumb up position is that, from here, your shoulder is in a compromised position, if the punch is blocked or deflected up and away. The thumb down hook is best for close combat punching. This allows you to still lock your shoulder blade down and turn your body through the punch, similar to a horizontal elbow. The big advantage of this punch is that you can land both the fist and elbow in one strike. Tyson style. Hope your going to watch the fight this Saturday!

Heavy bags, though, one of the key tools to full combat traditional systems, is still a miss-used tool where people hurt themselves. Hello, i had the problem with telegraphing the dtrikes with my left hook, now everytime i throw one it hurts, am now working on my technique and am doing some stabilizing workouts that you suggested. how long does it usually take until the pain goes away?
Depending on your age it can take anywhere from 3 months to over 6 months. You have to determine whether you’ve had a subluxation, dislocation, sprain, strain or just an overuse condition. Remember to keep you hand in front of your shoulder, and your forearm in alignment with your punch. 🤛🏼

Hyper mobility is a different condition. This is where your joints are commonly more open. For this you want to look into strengthening the joint capsule. Training with cables, bungees and the Total Gym could help you strengthen your shoulder connectivity.
There are many things that could be the cause for this. Your punching mechanics, being most likely. For example. If you push through your jabs, the counter force of the impact can run back up your arm to your shoulder, if you are not rotating properly or hooking your jabs, your shoulder can be damaged. Start by reducing your impact during training and focus more on your timing, rhythm and balance. Heavy bag hitting is the cause of the majority of shoulder injuries in training. 😎
This shoulder problem is insane. I’ll got injury way back, around 2 years ago and when I am throwing a clean hook back of my shoulder starting to hurt. Doctors says it’s an impingement and early symptoms of arthrosis they let me do boxing on amateur level but shesh… it’s hurt.
Yes. If impinged and dislocated both shoulders over the years. Correct form means don’t pull your fist and elbow back behind you to cock your punches. Work rotator cuff exercise like these in the video and add some shadow boxing in front of a mirror to check your mechanics, balance, timing and rhythm.
From a guy who’s fought, played a ton of competitive sports and know a ton of pro fighters. Surgery should be your last resort. Once you start, it will be the first of many. The longer you wait the better off you will be. You should definitely work on tightening up your strikes. Keep your elbows in front of you and rotate you shoulders and base to generate your power. There are shoulder braces you can use for support, but that just addresses the symptom. You should focus on correcting your technique so that your body mechanics are in proper alignment.
Whenever I throw my left jab it feel as if my arm is gonna pop out of my shoulder accompained by popping/clicking sound but I don't really experience that much pain and I m able to do everything else properly and I am able to throw hooks and uppercuts without experiencing this problem. @@luisguzman8218 yes, you are correct, it could be a tear. There are many possibilities that could happen. Great comment. Thanks for your comment. I appreciate this 😎
I’m in the same boat and it feels the same way no matter how much I try to do the basics of full extension on my jab it feels exactly like it’s going to pop out and it hurts when it locks
@@Tetris894 It took my injury 2 months to heal and now I don't experience this problem anymore. You should give your shoulder atleast two months to heal and after that try to always warmup before working out to avoid this kind of problems
Suge Perez Good question. It depends on what you’ve managed to do to your shoulder. If it’s chronic pain reoccurrences that bothers you. It’s likely because you didn’t correct the balance between the muscles carrying your shoulder. It can be that you are also continuing to use incorrect movement in your activities. Sleeping positions are also a culprit.
Happened to me wit throwing jab when I threw my left jab my shoulder came out or popped and it felt stuck for a second mid round while it was hurting at the same time. It’s scares me to throw combinations because I have fear of my shoulder coming out
Hey stretch. Ok. Cool. I’ll do a quick one minute video for you on things you can do to protect an injured shoulder when jabbing. I’ll try to get that up later today for you.
Sorry it took so long stetch. I made this video specifically for you. I look forward to your comment and feedback. Keep up the questions. ruclips.net/video/QYdb-lY_mdM/видео.html
When I was sparring I got off balance and threw a hard jab and I had my shoulder loose and I hurt my shoulder very bad I went to the doctor and got x rays but he said there was nothing broken it’s been months and I can’t throw a punch the same anymore, it feels like my joint is out of place. What do you recommend for me?? Should I go to a chiropractor?
Michael Nathan A chiropractor may be able to help. You’d probably do better with a physical therapist who could also give you exercises for recovery. It takes several months for recovery.
Yes, that is exactly what I was mentioning. Boxers without a tone fo experience in timing and distance should not sling shot their punches or use floating punches. You gave me an idea. I’ll make a video to show how floating punches and shoulder sling shot punches can be used effectively. I really appreciate you commenting. Thank you 🙏
Hi, thank you very much for the video! I did lot of boxing, muay thai, and escrima (and gym), and I have chronic tendinitis to the cuff rotator (sovraspinatus) at the left shoulder since two years. I thought it was because of the too many jabs with the forearm, and because I feel the much pain while throwing them. It can be that while doing a jab I elevate too early the shoulder to protect and then I extend the arm? Or maybe during a jab I turn a little bit too much the body and the arm ends up to be not exactly on the same line of the shoulder and that put effort on the shoulder? Or it can just be simply overuse? Also, how can I protect my shoulder during boxing training? I found I feel better if I use to jab like Kung Fu style or when I feel too much pain I just switch the guard, but in sparring and fighting it can be challenging. Thanks! Barbara
Ok., I've had a few questions now about people having rot at or cuff problems causing difficulty with the jab. I will make a video on this. Yea it could be an overuse problem, but likely more a mechanics problem with your punch. There are several kinds of jabs, which most people don't know. I will do a video on 5 different jabs. Changing your jab style will give you options
Sprains are often worse than breaks when it comes to the foot. Once you’ve sprained a joint the ligaments are stretched or partially torn. You can support the joint by strengthening the muscles around it. You will be more susceptible to sprains in the future of that same foot. If your feeling pain or your ankles roll out, you should be taping your ankles. If you can do some ankle strengthening training with a BOSU, jumping rope, walking on your toes etc. this will help depending on how bad the sprain is.
When doing shoeshiners, the speed punching effects the front of your shoulders. If you have an existing rotator cuff injury, they can very easily irritate your shoulders. Aquatic training, speed bag, double end bag, target ball, shadow boxing and light focus mitt or spaghetti bat training might be better to recover with.
When holding pads, try to slightly slap the punch. Therefore your energy is meeting the impact in a forward direction so that when you bounce off the impact your focus mitts don’t recoil back behind your shoulder. Also, do your best to keep the focus mitts inside your shoulders. Thanks for commenting. I’m not sure if my answer met your question. If you’d like to expand on your comment I’d be happy to further respond with you.
I hurt which seems to be the side and back of my shoulder by pulling a window down with one arm… I spar at the gym and now I can’t because it hurts when my arm goes back. (I know I throw hooks wrong) The question is should I rest it or Go right into these exercises?
Rest you injury when its acute, then gradually work slowly, first with mechanics and shadow boxing, and then gradually move toward increasing speed and impact. Be careful. You know your pain tolerance
I shadow box everyday all of the sudden my shoulder starts fuckin with me I don’t know if it’s dislocated or what but when I raise my right hand I hear a sound and I just feel like the positioning in my right shoulder is diff then my left when I throw an uppercut body shot it hurts and when I start boxing and go hard and aggressive my right shoulder starts fuckin with me it doesn’t hurt unless I start boxing
It’s likely the way you are throwing your punches. People who cock their hands and elbows back thinking they are gaining power are setting themselves up for injury. Keep your hands and elbows in front of you and use your shoulders and waist to generate your power base.
I fucked up my right shoulder during baseball. I dove and dislocated it. After that I injured the right rotator cuff again when bench pressing. Right hooks are impossible for me. I cant internally rotate the shoulder that much even when doing it slowly.
Did you have to have surgery or just dealt with it? Aaron and I are going to have a conditioning, prevention and rehabilitation series in our memberships program we just launched. You’ll need to adapt your hooks. A good way to begin recovery is to shorten the lever. Instead of hitting heavy bags with your fist, use lighter bags and replace hooks with elbow strikes to get back your ROM (range of motion). I’ll personalize a video just for you by Monday
I made this video for you. I look forward to you thoughts. Thanks for being active. Listen for your name at the beginning. ruclips.net/video/QYdb-lY_mdM/видео.html
That could happen. I’ve seen people throw out shoulders, hyperextended elbows and even roll wrists by trying to air punch without proper knowledge of how a punch works. It’s a whole body movement, not just throwing your hand as fast and far away from your body as possible. I appreciate your comment 🙏

How does one fix this shoulder pain that doesn't go away?
Suge Perez
Good question.
@@JingShenKuoshu I'll use your suggestions
Happened to me wit throwing jab when I threw my left jab my shoulder came out or popped and it felt stuck for a second mid round while it was hurting at the same time. It’s scares me to throw combinations because I have fear of my shoulder coming out
Work on your punch mechanics. I can make a couple videos on punch mechanics and how to adapt your punches if you have an injury.
What is the barbell called as?
No sure what you are asking. Can you give me more?
Wow what a great video. This vid helped so much thx.
My jab is what's giving me problems...
I've got inpingment in my left shoulder
Hey stretch.
Ok. Cool. I’ll do a quick one minute video for you on things you can do to protect an injured shoulder when jabbing. I’ll try to get that up later today for you.
@@JingShenKuoshu thank you
Sorry it took so long stetch. I made this video specifically for you. I look forward to your comment and feedback.
Keep up the questions. ruclips.net/video/QYdb-lY_mdM/видео.html
I feel it more in my tricep and back ribs
How long would u recommend before returning to boxing with a minor shoulder impingement
You only know your body. Once shock no longer causes acute pain, you can start back
When I was sparring I got off balance and threw a hard jab and I had my shoulder loose and I hurt my shoulder very bad I went to the doctor and got x rays but he said there was nothing broken it’s been months and I can’t throw a punch the same anymore, it feels like my joint is out of place. What do you recommend for me?? Should I go to a chiropractor?
Michael Nathan yes yes yes, get all the help u can u poor thing ask everywhere search every site, research, and research.
Michael Nathan you’ve probably sub Lexes the shoulder. It’s essentially a shoulder sprain and can often be more painful than a break.
Sublexed
Get an MRI
Michael Nathan
A chiropractor may be able to help. You’d probably do better with a physical therapist who could also give you exercises for recovery. It takes several months for recovery.
Loved it
The Wise Grasshopper
Thanks Nathan.
Trouble is that first tip is how a lot of boxers get power. Gervonta Davis is a prime example , sugar ray leonard aswell
Thank you! Waiting for your video then 😊
This is for you as well Barbara. Please let me know your thoughts. ruclips.net/video/QYdb-lY_mdM/видео.html
What if you have foot injury from sprang ankle long time ago but its healed but it still gives you problems when training in Martial Arts?
Sprains are often worse than breaks when it comes to the foot. Once you’ve sprained a joint the ligaments are stretched or partially torn. You can support the joint by strengthening the muscles around it. You will be more susceptible to sprains in the future of that same foot.
If your feeling pain or your ankles roll out, you should be taping your ankles. If you can do some ankle strengthening training with a BOSU, jumping rope, walking on your toes etc. this will help depending on how bad the sprain is.
JingShenKoushu can you make a video on the subject if you have time for it?
For me it happens when I shoeshine , how come?
When doing shoeshiners, the speed punching effects the front of your shoulders. If you have an existing rotator cuff injury, they can very easily irritate your shoulders. Aquatic training, speed bag, double end bag, target ball, shadow boxing and light focus mitt or spaghetti bat training might be better to recover with.
In my left shoulder I have weakness and it gets tired much quicker when throwing punches but no pain what could this be ?
It could be your punching mechanics. This could be a good video to do.
Mine I find is holding pads and dragging it rather than stabilize it against the body.
Be careful. You know your pain tolerance
thanks
You're welcome! So nice of you, I hope you watch more of my videos. Please keep your comments coming. They help motivate us.
Omg !!!! Thank you a lot !!!! Now I can box again 😭

I’m happy to hear it helped. Thanks for the nice comment.
Smh, wish I knew this. Just five months into boxing training and I tore both rotator cuffs ☹️
Wow, that’s brutal. I hope you recover soon.

I used to never get these injuries. During the punching session it doesn't hurt. It's the next day
True. When your warmed up and adrenaline is pumping, you don’t feel it until the OMS kick in (Onset Muscle Soreness) 👍
I am boxer but i have problem with my shoulder
Nice to meet you Game Tube. I have a couple videos on here related to recovery, correction of mechanics and drills for boxers with shoulder injuries.
Have problems in both shoulders 😢
Israel C. Olivo I get you Isreal, both my shoulders are shot from years of training.
Not the only one bro, my dream is fucked up cus both of my shoulders are fucked up! 😵😔
dislocated both shoulders due to sloppy throws
Yep 👍 That where they come from.
I injured my self today on the heavy bag.
Oh no! Don't let your hand ride outside your shoulders. What injury do you get?
@@JingShenKuoshu I get bad pain when i hook the heavy bag in the shoulder like a stabbing pain feeling you know.

@@JingShenKuoshu Thank you, I didnt get a notification from youtube that you answered my comment but I went back and saw it now. Thanks
i punched in the air that so hard and I think I tear my rotator cuff tomorrow ill go doctor
That could happen. I’ve seen people throw out shoulders, hyperextended elbows and even roll wrists by trying to air punch without proper knowledge of how a punch works. It’s a whole body movement, not just throwing your hand as fast and far away from your body as possible. I appreciate your comment 🙏
It threw a punch exactly like that
Marcel Richardson : Yep, it’s been an injury I’ve had a lot of experience with.
So should I not do cable cross overs
Cable work is great, but maybe not at first if you have an acute injury
