  • The Long Island Rail Road at one time had a substantial freight business, but its unique challenges almost led to its disappearance. Learn how this tiny, but busy, island-bound carrier kept freight moving in the heart of the biggest city in the USA and its fastest-growing suburbs, and why its difficult operating environment set it up for a fall.
Speaker Ellis Simon is a noted writer and photographer and lifelong railroad aficionado.

Thank you for the nicely detailed presentation! My childhood inspiration for enjoying trains started back in Michigan. Lots of after dinner walks w/ Dad by a line that had CN and GT activity, long trains! Now as an adult on LI with a vehicle, I find myself wanting to drive to places on LI to see some freight being moved. I hope the activity keeps increasing!

Great presentations, thanks Ellis. What are the main goods that are transported in freight trains in the Bay Ridge Branch?

Great video! May I ask about the freight spurs that were further along the Port Jefferson branch? I remember there was a quarry in Setauket or Port Jeff that saw rail service until the 1980s, a lumber company that saw use from NYAR until 2007, a variety of private industries at the current Port Jefferson Station, and I think a brick factory off of the present day yard.

Wonderful presentation!! Thank you for sharing. Would you have, or know of any pictures from "The Hole" in Mineola? I remember seeing an old boxcar which sat next to D&A Cement back in the late 1970s and where the line crossed Sagamore Road. I'd love to see any images from it. I saw a few from a large fire in the industrial area, but I'd love to see anything else from that spur!
