If Nebraska didn't lost to Syracuse and Oklahoma in 1984. I think that Nebraska would won the 1985 Orange Bowl and the National Championship and a Big 8 title for the 4th times. Tom Osborne would have his 1st National Championship in 1984, 1993, 1994, 1995, and 1997.
How many teams in college football history can point to TWO LOSSES and say, without them, they would've won a national championship?
eliminate about half the losses to OU, FSU and Miami, the huskers could have had 7 to10 chips in Osborne's tenure, including a potential 5 in a row. We'll allow them an upset loss or 2 once in a while. lol
There was a dispute about televising this game. The Supreme Court in June 1984 ruled the NCAA TV package was a violation of anti trust law and invalidated the package. The CFA(College Football Association) had a package with CBS and the Big 10/PAC 10 was with CBS. The CFA tried to tell CBS despite the game being a PAC 10 game they couldn’t broadcast it due to a CFA school being involved. Ultimately cooler heads prevailed and the game was televised. But a telling comment came out of the dispute. A PAC Ten president was quarter as saying “After going to court to get the rights to televise their games, they tried to tell us we couldn’t televise our games.”
I remember everyone in Bellevue walking on air the week after this game because all the pre-season stuff said UCLA would be the toughest game other than OU. Then the week after, Syracuse!
UCLA was Sports Illustrated's preseason #1 in '84 😂.
I was at that game. Nebraska was so much more physical.
Soon to be big 10 Rivals!
Sundberg and his 10 min 40 time. Geesh!
