    When I lived in Wyoming we would drive through the snake river canyon everyday to jackson hole to work and would see animals. One day 3 moose stopped in front of our car, another day a bald eagle dove into the river and came out with a big trout, another day a mountain goat was laying on a flat rock watching traffic, another day on the way to work we saw a cougar run down a hill into a covered haystack. He was being chased by three or four coyotes. To bad I didn't have a camara. I can never get enough of nature and wildlife. Wyoming takes great care of their wildlife. I am new at painting as of 2019. My daughter gave me bob ross videos and supplies for my birthday in november and said I have faith in you mom. I cried, but can't seem to stop learning how to draw and paint. Maybe someday I will get good at it. My most recent painting was a red tailed hawk like yours.

    • @JansenArtEducation
      @JansenArtEducation  2 года назад +3

      Great question Leslie. You can always finish a painting with varnish. This applies to Heritage mediums and paints. All are compatible and you can layer any way you want. The varnish is polyurethane which is more durable. I always finish with varnish. Protects the best. Thanks!

    Great painting David but my Heritage paint is arriving this morning and I didn't order any glazing medium !! Can It be done without? Big question , if not I will attempt it next time but regards your courses I think that as a beginner we want to learn how to progress step by step as we tend to go backwards and forwards trying to catch up and then lose confidence because we're trying to go too fast ! I for one still struggle with colours, I also think that an ongoing monthly subscription is a good idea I don't know if you have thought about this just an idea, one continuous class?

    Thanks so much for showing another southwestern painting. Great tip about putting a clear glaze in-between your base color and subsequent layers to help lift and hold color layers. I bought myself a putty knife/scraper last week--love it. So if I want the focus of the painting to be the sky (love the luminous periwinkle color you made just to the right of the big cactus), I'd keep the foreground and the bushes more abstract/less defined, or even with less of a value contrast yes?

    Hi, David, I would like to just do the top darker blues first and then dry. To begin, you applied over the whole board medium and extender. I understand what you explained about slippery and sticky.
    (1) if I want to dry a lot more often and apply a lot more layers rather than work so much at once, would I re-apply the medium and extender after each drying?
    (I'm someone who might take months to complete this painting and there might be a week or two between my steps).
    (2). When I tried to use a paper towel, no matter how lightly, it seemed to take the blue/violet sky completely off down to bright orange or make hard-edged marks. Any suggestions? Was the paper towel extra soft? Was it dry?
    later: (Frustration - I've wiped it totally back to orange 4 times now.)

    • @JansenArtEducation
      @JansenArtEducation  2 года назад

      You can take breaks. When you come back just add more colors. You can also dry. If the paper towel is removing too much, it sounds like your paint is too thin. Reduce the extender medium. It only takes a little in the paint.

    Is the primer necessary or will a coat of gray paint work as well? TY

    • @JansenArtEducation
      @JansenArtEducation  2 года назад +1

      A painting is only as good as it's basecoat. If the basecoat fails, everything on top does as well. This is why the masters concentrate so hard on the "ground" or basecoat for the painting. If you use a cheaper paint, it will fail in time and your painting will crack or peel. I use the best products I can find to give the longevity to the painting.

    • @maried7776

      Oh 1 more thing. On 1 of your videos you used the heritage sealer. Does it matter sealer vs Primer/ & do you use primer on every painting? Your 30 day Roses videos is what I am starting with. I noticed you painted some boards with a base coat of paint. I need clarity before I start to make sure I have all my supplies to protect the board. TY so much~

    • @JansenArtEducation
      @JansenArtEducation  2 года назад +1

      Sealer makes the basecoat harder. The paint you use on top will slide more on the surface and also retain water. When I paint roses, I like the basecoat matte and softer so I don't add any sealer. Matte surfaces "grab" the paint which helps with more casual strokes. I add or not depending on the techniques I want to use.

    • @JansenArtEducation
      @JansenArtEducation  2 года назад

      Hi Christine. With Heritage Acrylics it will not. Other acrylics may be different. Once the paint is dry extender will not pick it up. Again for Heritage only, you can use the hair dryer on hot. That helps set the paint faster. Let the board or canvas cool down before applying the next layer.
