  • This video explains how to cut back early flowering perennials, such as Geraniums, Alchemilla mollis, Chives, Nepeta, in early summer to produce fresh growth and a second flush of flowers. The video shows a hardy Geranium half of which was cut back earlier, and half of which was left to illustrate the point.

Thank you - very helpful tutorial for a gardening novice. I’ve heard this is called the Chelsea chop and as it’s Chelsea week and my perennials are well advanced, I’ve bitten the bullet and cut them back by about a third. My wife looked on in horror as I chopped all my Phlox flower heads off so fingers crossed!

Hi Yes I would cut it back. It will certainly get foilage. It is very likely to flower again, as you say its a repeat flowered, but it maybe inhibited by our weather (UK)
