@MtetoNjomi if DA raised Mandela from the grave they would still not get a meaningful increase in support from the black emerging Middle class. Like PA and EFF, DA needs to learn how to use the power they have more effectively
Roman's dismissal effort is a massive misstep, and I've heard Renaldo's rebuttal to Zille's appearance on the Burning Platform. If I was back on the fence with the DA after the election, I'm climbing back down the way I was hoisted up. Mark, I do think you're being grossly unfair to John and Roman. It can't be cadre deployment if Roman isn't even a DA member. Nor is he that questionable. Even if Roman was a member, it's a positional internal to the minister portfolio. Less than nobody cares if the CoS is a cadre.
@JonathanWrightZA he is not questionable? In a country of 80% black people and you expect blacks to be okay with an appointment of a racist? Are you thick?
Thanks for the insight. I'm not a DA supporter, Mike, but I find your characterising Roman Cabanac as "cadre deployment" to be unfortunate for RSA... After all we've suffered, I'm surprised you'd confuse an SOE CEO or manager, a municipal manager or employee with a chief of staff in a minister's office? I enjoyed everything else, as usual. Thanks again.
Ramon is not a cadre , not a DA member. Becoming a Minister and still the party leader is enormous. Maybe Cillier Brink should be the leader and let John focus on Agriculture.
I didn't always agree with Roman's political views however he comes highly qualified and he does not strike me as a DA supporter. People should stop referring to him as a cadre.
A Cader is an appointee without meeting all the technical requirements for a position .In Roman appointment did he technically comply with all the prerequisites for the position.
@@teresalouro1615True, which makes the situation of John getting rid of him even worse. Buckling to pressure. Then DA saying it not a DA issue but a government issue, what a pathetic cop out. It was DA internal BS, same with Ronaldo. If the DA does not get a dynamic black leader in place they are screwed. Will not exist in 10 years from now.
Thanks for your interesting perspective Mike, one that I'm pondering on! I agree with you that it is starting to appear that the DA is not having as much impact on the GNU as I initially thought it would. I was quite shocked that Squirrel had the audacity to only give John the Agriculture portfolio, but more surprised that he accepted it - it was like getting the longest day prize at a golf day. When you look at other countries who have GNUs, the second biggest party normally has the Deputy President position and I question why they didn't stand firm on getting that. They were voted in as the second biggest party for a reason, yet they seem to have a sprinkling of portfolios, some of which are significant, but others just seem like consolation prizes. This Panyaza Lesufi story is a disgrace and just shows you what snakes they still are. We know that they can govern competently, just look at the WC, but if they don't show assertive leadership and make it clear that they won't accept the scraps, I'll be one of those who reconsiders my vote! No negotiating on things like the NHI, Bela Bill, EWC or minimum wage either!
I thought I'd give ActionSA a chance in the last local government election. What a mistake. I'm back with the DA. Nobody's perfect, but they are a little better than the other options. But hey, I'm just a pensioner with a great future behind me. What do I know? I still vote in every election and will continue until I die. I don't care who is in charge, just get the job done! Thanks for the insights, Mike.
This can only make the DA better. It also helps us to ask these questions. The DA in its current form presents an image of stagnation. Their worst choice was partnering with the ANC, they will never recover from making a deal with the devil.
What they did, had to be done so we did not land up with a MKP or EFF partnership with the ANC. But it has given the DA a chance to give the electorate a taste of what a DA Government can look like and deliver. With MKP or EFF it will be State Capture 2.0.
@@rosemarywheller9137 you are on strong drugs 😂😂😂mk and eff are going to take racist DA out...ramaphosa is a stupid guy controlled by zille and mbalula 😂😂😂

You counting score before the game is over. The fact that they have fewer portfolios to focus on might well count in thier favor. By staying out of the Gauteng government they distance themselves from the inevitable looting and shine a spotlight on the divisions in the ANC. You are also uninformed, he has made good strides in ag. - this department is less disfigured than some of the others so he won't make the same kind of splash as some of the others that are severely dysfunctional and affect our daily lives much more. As for Cabernac it's truly shameful that commentators like yourself embrace a clear double standard in these matters. The DA has a ceiling of probably 25/30 percent and the country is in trouble if we don't see a centrist "black" party pull 20 odd percent- ASA had potential but sadly is led by 2 cry baby Muppets.
The DA have a no back bone problem Absolutely no backbone in policy And deed This party is just that a party I am sure there are some good people in the party but no there is no back bone
Great analysis, Mike! I'm not a DA voter but I ddnt think it was wise for Steenhuisen to be a minister. Its made worse now that his subordinates are seemingly doing better. What a mess!
This needed to be said long ago!! Steenhuizen is not a charismatic leader at all. The day Steenhuizen and for that matter Helen Zille, were happy to see a charismatic leader like Mmusi Maimane leaving the DA they proved that their agendas were egocentric and not in the best interest of the country. DA go and find a charismatic leader or loose the golden opportunity offered to you in the last election.
Until she has a worthy successor she really has no choice. Leon Schreiber would be an excellent choice: clear about his vision and certainly not fearful when faced by ANC political hyenas 24/7.
I am not a supersonic politician n maybe you are . However do you have a specific leaning towards PA ? After 3 decades of destruction I think perhaps we need to open our eyes and be responsible as a nation and support the DA . It’s easy to criticise from the side .
I can’t vote for a man convicted of armed robbery. So, no to PA John is the reason I didn’t vote DA this year. To be honest, there’s nobody I want to vote for at National level at the moment. I will vote DA at local and provincial level.
Your baiseness for DA is deafening, ANC has got them by scrutum and strong arming them in every turn, They lost NHI, Bella, ministerial post, Tshwane mayor, out of gauteng government, DA weak.
If we want the DA to grow a pair, then they need greater support. People want miracles from the DA, yet they consistently get dismal support where it matters, at the polls. If we want real change, then the ANC must lose enough support to ensure they relinquish the security cluster.
I do necessarily want a DA government either, but if we want to get serious about fighting corruption, the ANC must lose even more support. As long as they control the security cluster, we will not make meaningful gains in our society.
I disagree with this analysis! The young and very capable DA Ministers of the GNU are shaking things up and bringing positive change and progress to our beautiful country!!
If the DA does not get a dynamic black leader in place they might as well pack up. They will never get ANC voters jumping the fence. Agree, no vision at all. They should also be looking to entice all the ASA goters back, seeing as Herman betrayed them royally. But no movement there either. DA has become too complacant with the Cape, they will lose that too.
Mike, you always have a hilarious way of speaking the truth. That is why I always watch all your shows. I do not always agree with your politics, but I appreciate that your analysis is always based on honesty and fairness.
It’s curious that the DA removed Musi , who some say is the South African “Obama” type leader and replaced him with John, who some say is a “wet rag”. The one thing that comes to mind when defining the DA is “Cinderella”. The ‘kind hearted beautiful soul’ that was stopped from going to the ball by her ‘stepmother’.
John Steenhuisen unfortunately made a huge mistakes with the team he has chosen to assist him. That's a fact. There is no-one to take over from him. So the DA seems a bit stuck, as you say, leaderless.
Agriculture is totally the wrong portfolio for Steenhuisen as leader of the DA. It is a portfolio which the voter barely cares about since there does not appear to be the sort of major problems of theft and corruption, incompetence and nepotism, afflicting most other Ministries. It is in effect a nonentity Ministry to the voting public and Steenhuisen should have known this and negotiated a much more important and critical position! I look at this fiasco and cannot understand how the DA has failed in negotiations and been outmaneouvred yet again by the ANC on this important matter! Does not bode well for the future of the GNU!
Just as the ANC struggles to metamorphose from a struggle organisation into a governing party, maybe the DA can’t make the big leap from Regional leadership to national leadership.
Can all of you people who like to criticize the DA, please stop!! Can you do better than them?? They work very hard and will continue to do so, more than most to keep this country's interests afloat!! The mind boggles!!
In future Opposition party leaders should not take ministerial positions in the GNU (only DP, Primier, or maybe finance). All GNU option leaders have been neutralized.
Usually agree with you Mike but this i fundamentally disagree. If you listen to Frans Cronje's breakdown of the vote you will understand why the DA polls in the 20% secondly all emerging new parties are fishing in the same pond as the DA. They understand that the rural vote is good as dead. Thirdly, agriculture is a minstry where you will never see immediate results, Leon can clear 300 000 visas its a tangible and instance service. John is doing the right thing meeting the people on the ground, trying to understand problems and building relationships abroad. I find it very frustrating to hear the continuous bashing of someone who has done well despite been criticised at every turn.
Panyaza is a smart-wannabe clown and it's just a matter of time before he hit a snag because he runs a minority government. Remember he spent half a billion sanitising schools. If you idolize a leader of Lesufi's calibre then I guess you can't think beyond your nose.
The problem is Steenhuisen was always a poor appointment -- a necessary fill in after the disaster of Mmamaine. The. Real issue is who is a good candidate in the DA. The good guys are too young-- the mayor of CT and the mayor of a small town in Kwazulu Natal.
@@PennyPienaar Actually Penny, you are correct. That is what the word cadre is taken yo mean in the SA political context. So in strictly technical terms, as per that definition of cadrs, Roman wouldn't be one since we are told he was not a DA member.
I lost confidence in the DA under John when Natasha Matzone was removed from the PubEnt Portfolio Committee, after she picked the corruption at Alexkor and began making a lot of noise. After Natasha left the Alexkor corruption got whitewashed and flourished.
They edpoused a vision before the DA lost the vote and handed the DA a golden opportunity. Another thing to consider is what is going to happen to the Afrikaner vote, the leaders of the VF+ are past pensionable age and there is nothing to make their followers "excited" about what they are doing. Also a group waiting for new leadership.
Sadly, there doesn't appear to be good and strong leadership in any of the political parties. However, RSA has a societal problem, not a Steenhuisen problem.
Agree on the Roman issue - can't by any stretch of the imagination be construed as 'cadre deployment '.
Roman Cabanac is not a DA member.
@@AvrilBeard cool.... but still irrelevant. Even if he was, it wouldn't be 'cadre deployment.'
You're talking shit Mike! Ramon was never a cader or member of the da.
He was a cadre, domkop! A DA plant of sorts!
Not a DA fan, but if DA wants to shake things up n maybe get a deputy president position they must bring in Chris Papa's from KZN into National
This can only make the DA better. It also helps us to ask these questions.
The DA in its current form presents an image of stagnation. Their worst choice was partnering with the ANC, they will never recover from making a deal with the devil.
DA is part of "the devil" always remember that ❤
The globalists own both teams
What they did, had to be done so we did not land up with a MKP or EFF partnership with the ANC. But it has given the DA a chance to give the electorate a taste of what a DA Government can look like and deliver. With MKP or EFF it will be State Capture 2.0.

I can’t see Gayton’s popularity extending much beyond Coloureds in the WC who identify with his rags to riches story.

DA is starting to be a Helen Zille's MK Party
There are a number of changes taking place in the GNU thanks to the DA representatives. It is early days still.
Yes, the DA representatives are doing well. Steenhuisen?
Underwhelming…
Well said
I’m disappointed with the line they took with Ronaldo etc. It tells me they decide on political merit, not on principle
The DA have a no back bone problem
Absolutely no backbone
in policy
And deed
This party is just that a party I am sure there are some good people in the party but no there is no back bone
Agree with you Mike, heartsore but very true....
Totally unfair and incorrect assessment of Rinaldo and Roman.
Spot on! At the moment the DA is making the ANC look good by doing a great job, but shooting themselves in the foot in the process.
The young and very capable DA Ministers of the GNU are shaking things up and bringing positive change and progress to our beautiful country!!
Not a leader whatsoever
Bad voters....vote for bad parties...empower bad leaders!
Great analysis, Mike! I'm not a DA voter but I ddnt think it was wise for Steenhuisen to be a minister. Its made worse now that his subordinates are seemingly doing better. What a mess!
@JohnSteenhuizen, listen and heed!!!!
He won't
This needed to be said long ago!! Steenhuizen is not a charismatic leader at all. The day Steenhuizen and for that matter Helen Zille, were happy to see a charismatic leader like Mmusi Maimane leaving the DA they proved that their agendas were egocentric and not in the best interest of the country. DA go and find a charismatic leader or loose the golden opportunity offered to you in the last election.
Hellen calls the shots anyway.
Until she has a worthy successor she really has no choice. Leon Schreiber would be an excellent choice: clear about his vision and certainly not fearful when faced by ANC political hyenas 24/7.
Well Done!! Please get Helen Zilke to interact with her about this current Issues 😢
I am not a supersonic politician n maybe you are . However do you have a specific leaning towards PA ?
After 3 decades of destruction I think perhaps we need to open our eyes and be responsible as a nation and support the DA . It’s easy to criticise from the side .
The PA just might be one of the biggest winners in 2026, for the reasons mentioned in this podcast: leadership visibility, and branding.
well i uope not we dont want ex-cons running this country.
I can’t vote for a man convicted of armed robbery. So, no to PA
John is the reason I didn’t vote DA this year. To be honest, there’s nobody I want to vote for at National level at the moment.
I will vote DA at local and provincial level.
@bevturner2258 I voted the same way as you did this year. I will never vote for John Steenhusien as long as he's leader of the DA.

If we want the DA to grow a pair, then they need greater support. People want miracles from the DA, yet they consistently get dismal support where it matters, at the polls. If we want real change, then the ANC must lose enough support to ensure they relinquish the security cluster.
We don't want DA
When are people going to understand that the DA will never be the government of this country.
I do necessarily want a DA government either, but if we want to get serious about fighting corruption, the ANC must lose even more support. As long as they control the security cluster, we will not make meaningful gains in our society.
@@yvonnememela918 Happy to settle for a centralist or centre-right coalition government.

Molefe is rogue. His corruption brought down Transnet, let alone Eskom.

I disagree with this analysis! The young and very capable DA Ministers of the GNU are shaking things up and bringing positive change and progress to our beautiful country!!
The new young DA Ministers are doing a great job.
The DA leader, not so much…
If the DA does not get a dynamic black leader in place they might as well pack up.
Great analysis of the political situation Mike.
Jan Smuts, Verwoerd, Botha, De Klerk etc. Regardless of their notoriety were leaders. John is very weak, just good at debating…
Yes they the only party working for the people and getting things done.
In future Opposition party leaders should not take ministerial positions in the GNU (only DP, Primier, or maybe finance). All GNU option leaders have been neutralized.
Even Gayton, who I think has been doing a good job. But at what cost, His personal brand has been elevated, but the PA is losing its edge.
Still say that anc will win the next election above 50%
What I think is that Mike you are onto something but you offer no alternative. Who would you pick in the DA to lead?
Good point
All their legitimate leaders left, Mashaba, Maimane and that other lady. Now you left with racists.
There's plenty of young DA talent that could step up when the time comes.
I'm thinking Pappas and Hill Lewis who are a bit young. Perhaps Schreiber?
Mike what kind of a leader are you?
Roman was not a friend of JS. Roman was head hunted
Head hunter needs his head read!
After this John will never talk to you he takes everything personal ask Clement Manyathela
Who cares? John must grow a set of testicles and get over himself.
Did John chose it, or was it given to him?
The ANC leaders know that they will benefit votes from the work of their coalition partners
The ANC are riding on the back of the DA
Then John needs to sepate the 2 jobs portfolio. He can't do both. Anc has a succession plan that will put anc back in power in the next elections.
DA are all about dotting g the i's and crossing the T's. Pretty sure they have something in the pipeline but not communicated it.
Da take chances they don't know politics that is why Panyasa played them daily. 😂😂😂
Lesufi is an idiot. Plus, i dont know why that is funny. Gauteng is a shithole under ANC Gauteng leadership
JS was elected. Not appointed.
Please explain why/how Roman is regarded as a cadre deployment.
He has an LLB qualification, and no skills in Agriculture, a ministry in which he was appointed Chief of Staff.
