All of his subordinates praising his shrewdness in those other categories is a mix of a joke on people yelling about how smart or whatever the MC is for no reason and of him using that same adoration to get away with not having to explain what he doesn't know but his subordinates would. I feel this is what will happen whenever somebody says “if I travelled back in time and became king, I would create a democracy”. The reason democracy and capitalism came to be was because people argued and discussed said ideas over 1000 years if not more. If somebody became a king and then tried to create democracy, it would fail almost immediately. I’m not sure where I heard it (maybe in a college class) but when you are spending every moment of every day of your life to survive, you don’t have the time to actually think of democracy or politics, only when there is technology advancement, agricultural development, where life gets a little bit easier and little bit better do we see these conversations happen and start.

Ainz himself manipulated Adventurers to come to Nazarick, just so he could kill, torture and Experiment with them and use it as an excuse to start a war.
Ainz planned to whipe out an entire Species, just for training of his underling and using their corpses as new Recruits for his Army.
      He Genocided an Entire Kingdom.
He by no means trys to bring modern morals and Ideals to the world.
He is more trapped in this form of the overlord, without emotions. He is persuing his selfish goals, trying to find his old comrades and wanting to be loved by his underlings.

Ainz’s Floor Guardians/Generals and other residents of the Great Tomb of Nazarick are seen by him as the “children” of his dear friends and guild mates. This is Ainz’s main drive to “game” this world to reunite with his crew and protect his “family”. The conflict is given flavor by the fact that they are all MONSTERS and Ainz is doing all he can to act ethically despite everyone assuming the most evil motives.

  • @wren5413
    @wren5413 9 месяцев назад +13

Ainz is one of my favorite characters of all time. Over the course of his arc we see the layers pulled back as he becomes more and more like the monster he now appears to be, however, while this is a great concept, it has its limitations, what makes Ainz unique, is around the 10th novel, very slowly, the layers start peeling back even more, but in the entirely different direction, in an absolutely genius move from the author, we start to see the contradictions in Ainz’s inner thoughts, we slowly start to see that its all been a lie, Ainz is not slowly becoming the monster, Ainz was always the monster, long before he gained the power and the appearance. He just didnt have to power to act on it. All that changed about him when he came to this new world was he gained the power to act as the monster he always was. We can see these contradictions not because he is narrating to us and telling us lies, but because the inner thoughts we see from him are his lies to his own self. In the very first novel, when he watches the first attack on Carne through the mirror, he thinks about how watching people die doesnt bother him now he has his new body, and that its strange, however we learn later that the world he came from is a 1984 style distopia and he is used to seeing dying people. He is just lying to himself to justify his real mentality. In the 13th novel, Ainz finds a room containing abandoned test subjects from Demiurge’s research on healing magic, where he would cut limbs off live people and use healing magic to attach them to different people, insanely gross and inhumane research, and when Ainz finds it, his very first thought is to wonder what information was gained from this research, and then almost as if he had to remind himself to have morality, he asks himself why Demiurge would do this, despite the answer being obvious. As the story goes on we see Ainz making more and more excuses to himself in order to justify what hes doing. And more and more those excuses make less sense and are easier to see through. And this, this is the genius of Ainz Ooal Gown. The human becoming the monster, only to slowly realize, he was always the monster, but refusing to admit it to himself.

Overlord does a wonderful job as the antithesis of both the western theme of the heroes journey and the eastern theme of unseating false authority. Ainz Opal Gown is an antagonist MC. Instead of meeting failure and journeying to overcome a heros trial this journey falls on the underdog Climb. Instead of being an unjust and tyrannical god to be overthrown, Ainz struggles to make his followers accept good living and working conditions when they want an all demanding tyrant. This is just two of the many themes they choose to overturn and it is refreshing.

They still also cover heroic themes and sacrifice. We get the sacrifice of Gazef for his kingdom and friends to try and get a sliver of a chance of victory. In the light novel we see the death of Brain was even better because it included how he finally surpassed Gazef in his last moments. It subverts this where Climb still fails even with the Sword that could kill Ainz in a fair 1Vs1 fight, but brings him back accepting it for Renner.

I believe the thing that is the issue with Overlord's story is that despite how good the Anime adaption is, it misses so many details from the LN that would easily make Ainz not be a generic isekai protagonist and Overlord one of the best written Isekai in the genre. Especially since it goes into detail about what kind of world Ainz is from, why he cherishes the Guild NPC's like his own children. Why he goes on an absolute power trip, because there is a lot more to it than just *UNLIMITED POWERRRRRR* . There is an entire channel called Aninews that covers everything that was left out of the Overlord anime so that you guys can get better context.
But in general it is one of my favourite Isekai anime because our protagonist is not someone who is heroic and good, but someone with twisted morals who would justify their means with the results they achieve.

I love overlord, it answers the age old question of why the frick is the demon lord suddenly attacking our world and why do they have a bunch of demon generals who look absolutely nothing like him
The answer is because they are the isekai protags and you are merely an npc
    Love the premise
Also, because alot of the abilities are based of D&D specifically, like goblin slayer, it makes it extremely easy to understand how Ains is beating master swordsmans in physical combat with no items
Like, your unarmed strike goes up with proficiency bonus, and isn't class dependent in accuracy, same with new stuff like escape grapple DCs from 5e, I mean sure they also scale off strength, but a huge part of their scailing is literally just what level they are
Ains doesn't need to use weapons or magic when fighting weaklings, as he is immune to low level physical damage, and is legitimately strong enough to outclass anyone who isn't a minimum level
There are a few scaling things which make it similar to D&D, and a few scailing things which make it different
Spells with similar names and levels:
    -Dimension door level 4
    -fly level 3
    -Lighting bolt level 3
    -Cause fear level 1
But then misc things like exactly how the spells interact with the game world are different, damage scailing, unlike in D&D, damage is exponential, which makes sense considering Yggdrasil is a videogame, not a ttrpg, and most videogames do this to force artificial level pre-requisites on high level fights, basically this extends the playability of the game, while making being low level more impactful
Then, they made a level down on death mechanic, meaning it is difficult to stay at say, level 100, even though levelling is actually fairly quick in Yggdrasil, so you could speed run the game 1-100 in only a couple weeks
However, if you didn't have enough equipment and such, you may die repeatedly and go back down to a level more fitting for you, meaning the true factor which determines your overall level is a combination of gold and other resources
One massive resource was friends, ains only got to level 100 because Touchme helped him out, and without the support of his guild, he genuinely wouldn't be considered very strong
So, Ains is overpowered, but mainly from the artifacts and magic items which he had acquired as part of a group, and they will eventually run out of course, I mean if ains was dropped into the new world just being a level 100 with no Nazarik, he would still be formidable, but he wouldn't be a god-level threat, and he would probably end up just like any anime protaganist
What differentiates overlord specifically power-wise, is precisely his buddies
And we do sort of see this when he fights any enemy at all, he only brings a small fraction of nazarik with him, but that small fraction has such immense power, that you could conceivably imagine ains taking over the entire world so long as his generals survive, which now makes sense as to why heroes take out the demon generals before killing the demon lord, like, without the generals, as well as armies, there is no demon empire
Long comments... now I gotta make them shorter...

    • @yammoto148
      @yammoto148 9 месяцев назад +4

Yes its very familiar to D&D, what I like about it is the fact you don't just have class levels but racial levels too if you are playing a demihuman race.
For example Naberal is a Doppleganger but you wouldn't know because she only has level 1 Doppleganger so she only has 1 form to take. Where as Pandora's actor is a level 75 Doppleganger and can almost completely imitate who he copies.
This means you can double dip in terms of diversity, because you can customize your character to be anything you want based on what racial levels you get. This also means you can't just start as a powerful race as you have to start as a weaker race gain a couple of levels then get levels in the race you want. For example Albedo doesn't start as a Succubus, she is initially an imp and has 10 levels in it, then she gets 15 levels in Succubus and she has more racial levels in other areas that aren't revealed in her character card.
This is actually a system I wish they would implement in D&D in some form, even if its in a limited capacity. Like imagine starting as a Kobold then evolving into a Dragonborn then evolving into a full Dragon.

There are a few important destinctions from normal Isekai in Overlord:
    1. Ains alone didn't get teleported, his entire guild did and the various NPC's made by his friends did as well.
    2. While those NPC's did have some base personalities coded into them by his guild mates, everything not specified has been filled in with the personalities of his guild mates, making them almost reincarnations or children of his friends.
    3. His character suffers from emotion suppression. This makes it very hard for him to become attached to things in the new world since attachment is almost like a debuff to his Lich character. The exeption being his NPC's which he has attachment to from BEFORE being Isekai'd.
This makes the story less about exploring exploring a new world and more about how does he protect his guild and the legacy of his friends from this hostile new world.

I feel like a very important part of Ains was missed here and no one in the comments mentions this.
In the the Yggdrasil game, Ains and all his fellow friends who played races that weren't human were picked on by the Humans in the game. Because in this game there was no penalty for Human players to attack other races. It created a vicious cycle where humans bullied other races in the game. Ains's guild was formed to protect these other races and was therefore filled with strong players that hated the human players and who actively attacked human players to keep the other races safe...
That's why all the Guild NPCs have such strong hate for humans and since Ains was the leader he was also a PvP expert in the game.
Fast Forward... Ains is now trapped in a world that is not Yggdrasil but has some similarities to the game... and already in this game he experiences hate towards him and his other non-humans which already creates some anger in him. this is further fueled by the fact that he is now also experiencing the side effects of being a lich. Which is being emotionless. Add this to the fact that he was actually a human in real life and he realizes that this game is not a game but a real world, he is conflicted regularly by his emotions being hateful to humans and not wanting to hate them.
this conflict is very present in the show and you can often see why he is ruthless.
this balance between his emotions is what makes him such an amazing character. And not only this, but also the way in which he tries to educate the denizens of the guild. He doesn't just want them to follow him blindly, he wants them to show compassion and not only hate toward humans, but partly because he also wants them to be there to correct him should his lich side completely take over and he can no longer feel emotion. He needs them to be better to make him better.
Its such an amazing show and such a deep character building behind it.

Long winded comment I put here, but jesus some these comments in this video are downright brainrot to read. So thank you for not being an idiot!

The thing that separates ainz from other overpowered main characters, is that overlord does not start at the begin of his journey. Almost every other OP character starts being OP and discovers how to use that in their favor.
Ainz gained his status by being an elite player in yggdrasil, and that was not just granted. He was/is clearly a mastermind tactitian, and his mind was so ideatic (at least with in-game related content) that he memorized and learned how to use in his favor more concepts, spells and data in general, even information not related with his build, that very few people could rivalize with him.
What moves the plot is his impostor complex: He gained his almost almighty power without cheating, and he does not underestimate others and keeps learning, but he also does not see himself worthy. The trust (or fear, or both) that everyone feels towards him was earned, and he needs to learn to accept that fact.
Still, he's sympathetic because, even if he does not sees himself as everyone else sees him, he values his subordinates (children) and his domain more than everything, and makes their happiness and wellbeing his ultimate goal, even if that means obliterate everything else in existence

Some people think overlord is an anime about how strong ainz is. It isn't it is about how will this world will be shapen by someone with ainz's power, thats why he is also the type of protagonist that will open a fight with a crotch punch because he can, unless his aim is to look cool or make people fear him, he will probably drown you with minions then he will fight you with another 100 minions. But people seem to want something different from this anime, some people have told me that they wamt ainz to struggle in a fight and that they want him to have a challenge, but thats not gonna happen, thats not what this anime is about, we know ainz is never gonna die or fail, he is gonna conquer the world, he is gonna become this world's overlord, ainz struggles aren't physical or with enemies they with himself, how can he become the overlord he already is? How is he supposed to act as an overlord? What do people expect of him? This anime is about the ascension of an overlord.

Everyone who hasnt read the novel says nonsense like that. Overlord ignited my love for isekai so i might be a little biased. He is from the gameworld Igdrasil hence the name but stuck in a new world similar to igdrassil. Also not a team who wrote the novel just one guy Kugane Maruyama. Not the story of a king but a god the god of life and death to be exact, he himself doesnt even relise it yet in the story but the world around him starts to get it. The second season is a good giveaway for that. He is not interested in getting home he wants to conquer the world to possibly reunite with his friends if the got isekaid too. B plus for humor you kinda got the story

The ONLY things I disagree with in this video is that you didn’t include the English voice actor saying “Ainz Ool Goan” cuz his voice is EPIC and REALLY fits the character.
Also that it’s a completely different world from Yggdrasil that, after the servers shut down, him and the entirety of his guild’s base are transported to a new world.

He genuinely felt bad he had to crush that belief, but was also pissed that they tried to lie to him. The best part is if they had have been honest about WHY they went there to Momon (Ainz) when he asked while escorting them to the crypt, they probably would have survived and been made to flee rather than dying. He's not evil, he just has priorities, but his empathy sometimes overrides that and arches story probably would have.

That second arc you mentioned, where they go and interact with people, reminds me of a story from Greek myth where Zeus and Hermes disguise themselves as humans and go to earth to see if they can find one decent family who will grant them hospitality. They eventually do find an elderly couple who, despite poverty, offer to share all the have with guests for an evening. They reward those guests, after revealing their true nature, with care of a temple and with a wish granted that allows the two to never be separated, going out into their temple garden and becoming a tree when the time for their lives--which were massively extended, btw--to end comes along.

I wouldn't really call Ainz benevolent. As the saying goes, what separates a good guy from a bad guy is how they treat those that aren't of any immediate use to them. Ainz has shown again and again that he doesn't care about anyone but his subordinates at the guild and some of the things he did were absolutely heinous. Like what he did to the lizardfolk or the time he overthrew and tyrannized a country from the shadows, just so he could test his own limits and create some propaganda for the weapons he sells.
Ainz himself even admitted that he lost his humanity and doesn't feel any compassion for normal living beings anymore, so he's far from a good guy and any "benevolence" he shows is just to gain some kind of advantage for the guild.

For me Ainz is relatable, because he is so lonely. To outsiders he "has everything", but to use the viewer we know he is alone and unhappy. It makes him one of the most human characters in fiction, despite being an undead monster.

  • @camokiler
    @camokiler 4 месяца назад

I loved that a lot of the show isn't from his perspective, it's from the perspective of others seeing this terrifying pantheon of gods appear in their world that they have no real hope of defeating. You get to see characters lives, relationships, hopes and dreams and how they're crushed, changed or made by this overwhelming force.
In Overlord you want to see the main characters win but you want to see as much or even more the characters in the world survive because they cannot win and they cannot hide from Nazarick, as a viewer knowing this you hope that Ainz and Nazarick can see value in these characters that we grow to enjoy and care about because we know the result if their value to nazarick is greater dead than alive.

Ainz is the most overpowered character in the entire show, some of the spells he has could most likely instantly kill anyone instantly, the only way he could pass is if he was being careless, arrogant & reckless, his powers show that he cannot be beaten, even if another player is there he still is unkillable with his artefacts like his staff & ect make it even more impossible.

I agree with you on all of it except that he doesn't know about this world, his 'clan base' has been transported to another world that is similar to yggdrasil as he connects so many common elements in both worlds. The first thing he does after realizing that he is trapped in the game is he sends Sebas on a recon mission to check out the surroundings of their location. He then cautiously starts exploring the 'new world'.

One thing people need to keep in mind when watching or reading Overlord, is that the creator is a D&D Game Master. You don't notice it completely on the anime but from what I've heard from the source material readers, the World Building is top tier, the magic and skill system is detailed and awe inspiring. If you are, like me, an anime only fan but the show bored you a bit bc it felt like it was skipping important information or w.e, watch the show again but this time watch alongside with AniNews' Overlord Cut Content, Overlord Systems and Character explainers. Or read the LN/manga

They go into macro detail for Kingdom building.

I've played so many games and read enough stories about somebody starting with nothing and building up to a barely functioning something.
I want stories and games where you already are at the max level/top, and pretty much every battle in your way is a slaughter (I don't want a challenge, why would I want a challenge if my target was overwhelming power? if my enemy is still a challenge then clearly I've not reached the goal of overwhelming power yet)

A small addition is his connection to his underlings. That connection is also written with a smart twist.
They are loyal to him and love him. But Ains does not know what this loyalty is based on and how long it holds, because it is only written in their character not based on anything he really did (at the beginning). So he has to be vary of them and deppend on them at the same time.
