Thank you for this wonderful video Peter. I truly love my NU MU, your review of it was great, your understanding of the gear and audio is just brilliant! Keep making vids 🥳
Great job Peter. With all the content on RUclips, it is fantastic to discover your (very intelligent and valuable) 'voice' and information! "If" you could manage to make audio files available for students to download (and practice actually DOING exactly what you are teaching) that would make these tutorials even MORE valuable! Also, even though it's great having demos of hardware gear, if/when you expand into teaching with some plugins, that would also make the content more accessible to students. Thanks! And keep up the great work!
Glad you like it and thanks for your thoughts! I'll make the audio files available for download soon. My channel is new and I won't limit myself to hardware only, although I'll start with a couple of hardware reviews. The reality in studios today is a hybrid situation and even though you can't afford a lot of gear as a student, it's important to see and hear the difference. It's tempting to have everything as software plugins on the laptop these days, but the hardware versions actually do make a difference.;-)
Fantastic video! Thank you. I own a lot of Manley gear and the NuMu like the Elop+ sets a new bar for analog precessing. And the new Power Supply is a true champion. Manley is N1
Very helpful video. Thank you. I actually like this Vari Nu more than the more expensive Vari Mu which offers a thicker sound and takes away from the top end at times
The Nu Mu is a really great piece of gear and goes on all my mixes in some fashion. I actually thought the “overcompressed” demonstrations on this video still sounded good!
the difference is very settle, it’s more bearable with the manley and sounds more clean on what is already a clean sound to begin with sounds like magic
Damn.. it’s really a mid forward and unexpected much of glue from the limiter mode. Do you agree with the limiter being utilized for the mixbus a lot? And would pushing the input level more give me more of the tube character? I love this unit but I dont think Im hearing the varimu tube sound that much and maybe the input leveling might help a little? Its a beautiful piece regardless
I found the compressor section to be the strongest part of the unit. The limiter doesn't work like a brickwall limiter, but you can definitely push it harder, when it's needed for the style of music. The NuMu is a lighter Varimu version with a solid state output stage, that's why it doesn't colour the sound as much as the original VariMu. I like the more subtle colouration of the NuMu. It makes everything smoother without getting too tubey. Like everything in the studio world, it's a question of your personal taste.
How would you compare it with the RND portico mbp compressor side? Whats the difference, when do you use one or the other? A dedicated video would be the absolute best to listen to them but anyway good content, thank you very much!
Thank you, glad you like the content! These 2 units are quite different. While the NU MU works best on the mix bus, the MBP is the perfect as the last part in a mastering chain. The NU MU gives a nice tubey mix glue while the MBP is a finalizer, which can add more or less colour to the final mix (with the silk mode). Compressor and Limiter on the MBP work very smooth and musical. Surely you could use it also as a compressor in recording/mixing, but it's a bit limited here because you don't have really short attack times.
Thank you for the video. I actually didn’t like the unit… Vari Mu sounds more open and present i’d say. This guy made drums sound a little dull and less exciting to my ears. Vocals started sound a bit flat and less exciting too… so may be this unit needs more input gain to start sounding little more exciting.
Excellent job, subscribed! Can't wait for the Neumann monitors reviews!
Man I want one of these. Look forward to more hardware vids from you! Subscribing now!
Thanks for the informative review, Peter. Sending thanks and greetings from Carlsbad, California.
Good Luck with your channel, Subbed from Seattle

Ha! I take it as a compliment because Glenn is an awesome guy!
@@pmmixingmastering5741 Both of you are.
Hahahahaha my thought from the thumbnail! You guys should do a collab for us :)
I like how it smooths out all the annoying and harsh frequencies 😀
i really like the low end in the last song!
Thank you!

Thanks, great video. Can you do a similar video about the RND MBP ?. Best/Mathias
Thanks Mathias, good idea! I'll keep this in mind.
when you say fast matrials like what for example hip hop ?

Have you tried SSL Bus comp vs Nu Mu ?

It's a Studio 61 from Buso Audio.

I like it on a limiter mode. This mode sounds fantastic!
It's the nature of this unit to be a lighter version with less colouration, compared to the VariMu. For me it's perfect on a lot of material.
