    Jon Bois once said this, when talking about Phillies' '80s utility guy Steve Jeltz:
    "Of all the places one could possibly land on the ability percentile spectrum, it's this specific one (between the top 0,01% & top 0,008%) that will lend you the most criticism & the biggest disrespect."
    Jesse's rant, especially around 8:36 or so, reminded me of that.

    Hextall in Piitsburgh is easily one of the worst GMs in history.
    And yes Karlsson was a double acquisition. If he had matched his best seasons then the three players got their last run at a title.
    The other end of it is look at the trash he dumped in getting Karlsson. Every fanboy always wants to trade their terrible players and contracts for a better player and he actually did it. Worst case, everything else aside he dumped a pile of trash for a much easier to manage piece of trash. And Karlsson was not a bad player last year.
    Penguins are not a playoff team and while it may be on purpose it is also because they are old, slow, and have a coach that refuses to see that. The Hextall nightmare was a terrible time and only led to this, but to be fair he was also told to win with aging players.

    The problem with Pittsburgh is that they know they have to rebuild, but can't accept it because they still have Crosby, Malkin, Letang, Karlsson. I know Crosby means well by being loyal, but him staying is actively hurting the future of the team because they can't rebuild and have spent assets on trying to be a playoff team.
    This is like SJ from a few years ago. Doug Wilson couldn't accept that he had to rebuild, so all he did was spent assets on trying to make the playoffs. It's only after Grier came in that they accepted a rebuild and have all of this young talent.

    I was with Jesse on the first part, I didn’t think the pens would make the playoffs. Karlsson isn’t a plug and play player. He needs a specific style, usage and system to thrive. However I disagree it was on purpose. It was a big swing and bold play that so far has failed.

    Professional athletes put themselves out there in the public space. You spend money to watch them, support the team. Criticism of their sporting performance is legit. Criticism of them personally or taking it out of a rink/sporting environment isn't right. They are also paid extremely well, also they don't listen to the fans.

    Adam is dead on. The #1 way to have a successful rebuild, is to sell multiple pieces in order to have 2-3 years of drafting 2 or 3 guys in the 1st round. If you have nothing to sell and start from 0, with 1 1st round pick per year, you end up with 10 years old rebuild like Edmonton and Buffalo. The Pittsburgh stars all have NMC. My #1 job if I am Dubas is to tell Crosby that he won't retire as a Penguins because I will not give him an extension and do everything I can to make him wave his NMC. Once Crosby leaves, Malkin, Rust, Letang, Karlsson will follow because they won't finish their career in the worst team of the league. There are your 2-3-4-5.. additional 1st round picks that you need to properly rebuild.

    • @Moutarde_Chou
      @Moutarde_Chou 2 месяца назад +1

      I've been monitoring closely Kent Hughes moves from the beginning of the Habs rebuild. Don't forget he has the job since only January 18, 2022. That is 2 and a half years and 3 drafts from today. He has managed to fetch on top of his own picks since: 5-1st, 3-2nd, 3-3rd, 4-4th, 2-5th, 2-7th, Heineman, Barron, Matheson. (Not included Dach and Newhook since he paid to acquire them, I'm talking about selling guys to gain assets) No wonder why the rebuild is going fast there after only 30 months. Dubas need to do the same with his star players even if they have NMC.

    • @millionfish
      @millionfish 2 месяца назад

      I don't think the organization and the fans have the balls to tell Crosby that. He's brought them 3 cups, they'll be loyal to him to the end, even if it means sacrificing the future of the team. The other guys though, I can definitely see them being moved for 1st round picks/prospects this year.

    I''m still pretty sure that the Shanahan / Dubas dispute wasn't because of trades and power... it was an issue of greed. Dubas thought the Leafs NEEDED him because he was adored by players and agents (and yes, he even had a lot of veterans willing to come here on league minimum contracts because he was well liked). HOWEVER... He drastically ''overplayed'' his hand when it came to contract renewal and he thought the board would 'fold' to his demands like he did with player contracts. Shanahan took a step back and waited which annoyed Dubas - so now Dubas feels jilted, he puts the Leafs on hold which annoyed Shanahan and BOOM! See ya later Dubas - this is what it looks like in the real NHL when management doesn't fold to demands.
    So then... Dubas with the Penguins... Surprise surprise players love him (except those who need to delay becoming a rebuild). I'm really sorry Pittsburgh fans. You've got yourselves a GM who loves being PRAISED by players, more than he does MANAGING players.

      @@alltheworldsastage. Totally agree, but the REALLY big mistake was in taking Dubas over Hunter who was more than qualified to be the GM (and he had an insanely impressive track record as a professional scout!) They wanted the ''sexy, new generation, cool GM'' who would get along with the young core coming on board and that's EXACTLY what they got!

    The problem with Jesse's take is that he draws this conclusion under the assumption that everyone "is trying their best out there". That's just not the case. Should we be as hard on athletes as we are, no, probably not. But they are paid millions to do their jobs *well* and need to have some level of accountability when they underperform.

    • @Leafsdude
      @Leafsdude 2 месяца назад

      "Jesse's take" is that we shouldn't criticize mistakes. I don't think he see's a lack of effort as a "mistake". I bet Jesse would agree that booing Kostitsyn or Kovalev or Yakupov is not the same and is totally justified.

      People pay lots of money to show up to those games to boo, if they want, and those players make more money than 99% of the population on the planet to hear them. That is part of the job.

    I don't agree with abuse being directed at players, but players do need to be held accountable when they screw up time and time again. Take Trouba as an example. The guy makes the most bone headed plays year after year whilst making a ton of money and being the captain. He deserves to be criticized.
