We love working with adult goalies and have a large student component of female goaltenders.
My kid unfortunately just tweaked her hip by practicing recoveries between whistles to keep sharp. I guess we will be more cautious now. My old hips learned the hard way!

I could have used this information when I played. I must say my replaced hip feels fantastic, and now I can skate with my grandsons. They will not be goalies like their grandfather! Great tips Keeks.

I find the most comfortable play for me is to RVH boot in post and stay parallel to the goal line while keeping the back of my stick in the passing lane. Works very well most of the time since those centering passes are usually along the ice, but you have to be ready to adjust if it's quick a saucer pass backdoor. I'm gonna try to hinge out and cut the angle down a bit more from now on.
Great vid again! So much useful info here. I find that since I hated a poke check as a player, I now unfortunately poke check too much as a goalie😃 Gotta find that balance!

@@FutureProGoaltending I was trying to comment on the new vid you posted today about goalie hacks on breakaways…no clue how my comment ended up here…but yeah thanks I see how the fake works.
I always thought the VH was the preferred save selection if the shooter is between the goal line and the bottom of the circle. Personally, I’m not comfortable going into or getting out of the VH (blame it on inexperience and old and fat), but having that right knee down and pad out would cut down the cross crease passing lane. Also, I thought the RVH was reserved for below the goal line, or if they are just north of the goal line, inside the dot with an immediate shot threat, otherwise be on your feet or the VH. I know save selection isn’t written in stone, but it’s carved in wood somewhere.
There are several ways NHL goalies handle this. So it is important to explore which option works for you. Nothing is ever carved in stone as we would still be playing stand up 😎

From my experience I've found the most success with rvh when the shooters close, and trying to chip the pass high to the middle of the blue and red line. By doing this it forces players to wait until the buck hits the ice before being able to try and get a shot and and giving you lots of time to recover.

In the post play (cross-crease pass) demo, my go-to would have been a traditional VH. The fact you didn't show that as an option tells me I've been playing it wrong for years... Oops lol...

can you do a video on what makes guys who play deeper in the net like Henrik Lundqvist able to do it at the NHL level? Watching him practice, it's amazing seeing how he can maximize his size and alter his stance to maintain box control so deep in the crease.
Actually am in progress with this subject area. A note in advance. There has never been a Stanley Cup winning goalie who plays as deep as Lundqvist..😳

Great advice here re: saving your hips
It isn’t if they need surgery now a days, it is when..
even in live game scenarios if i know for sure theres no threats in an area the puck just went i wont explode to get there, ill only get up and move as fast as i need to to beat the players to positioning

This video is exactly what my 22 year old, decimated hips need Keeks.
I am very active about poke checking those cross crease passes. I've made a diving save or two from not being able to poke check.
I think I still need more movement practice compared to other goalies at this point but may incorporate this into morning skates or pre stick n puck
Just don’t overcommit your body to the pass cut or you will be leaving them an open met
So don’t do the reposition in practice but do it in games also I have a question do you know if true leg pads come in juniors and intermediate?
You only do it in games if there are opponents where the pucks is headed, and yes pads come in intermediate/ senior/ youth etc

Over time you know who is where, no need to overreact. I get the need as a youngster to get the mechanics memorized, but over time you'll learn when and where to do certain things. Also, great for energy conservation in those games when guys are launching a million BS shots with few actual scoring threats.

Seems a bit far for the RVH. To me, I'd stay on my feet from there or VH, depending on he situation.

Plenty of goalies got burn from the rvh in that position, I'm no pro but you also got defenders. If it's not on the red line, there is no reason for it.

I feel like this is just teaching bad habits when u don’t fully follow a rebound.
I can show you hours of footage of NHL goalies, OHL and D1 in practice not doing this every shot. You FOLLOW every shot visually….but with no man there waiting a rebound you don’t. Young kids yes of course. Normally this wasted motion stuff is pushed by goalie coaches who haven’t played at the highest levels who may have be parroting what their youth goalie coach taught them, who also didn’t play at a high level.(high level =ECHL / AHL / NHL
For example two of my students, NHL leader Jack Campbell and Jeremy Swayman, Bruins don’t do this on 99% of the shots in practice. I feel like they might know what they are doing….😎
