Gold Leaf / Foil Western Leather Holster. Leatherworking ASMR

- I've used gold leaf before in my woodwork and wooden ship models. This is the first time using it with leather. In this case, it's actually imitation gold leaf (similar to the metal foils used in heat stamp machines): I've never used genuine gold leaf. Maybe if this video does well, I'll buy and use some of the real thing? Anyway, I made this on request from an acquaintance who asked for an asian-themed tooling/design for a family member. I painted the dragon metallic red hoping it would really 'pop' through the antique, but it kinda blends in with the dye color of the rest of the holster. Oh well
Any questions about the construction please drop in the comments and I'll be happy to answer.
My laser is the excellent xTool P2.
Below is a link for saving a few bucks purchasing a P2 direct from xTool. I was given this code to pass on to my viewers when I first received the the laser. Hopefully it still works:

The stamp used is a Zhong Jiang E803
The original dragon artwork is from Etsy seller Photo4YouUnlimited (though I revised it a tad for my purposes)

Now I just want to put it into glass case. What a beautiful piece of art..
Thanks for watching!
Always a great day when another Road agent video pops up!
Thanks for watching another one!
Work of art.
Thanks for watching!
How cool is that?!?!!? Great work.
Thank you!
Excellent 👌
I got back into leather working last year after almost 12 away from it. Your videos have helped me take my skills to a whole new level. You and Don Gonzales are my personal favorites. Thanks for reigniting this passion for me. I now have my own leather business and have a studio in my home. Anyways…. Thanks again…
That's awesome! Thanks for watching!
Keep making some of the best holsters I’ve ever seen. The videos you make have actually inspired me to want to try and make holsters myself 😊
Great to hear! Thanks for watching!
Holster turned out hella dope, @RoadAgentLeather!
Thanks for leaving comments! Always appreciated.
Wow what a nice job
Thanks for watching!
Oh and the Dragon is fantastic!
Thanks for watching! And thanks for subscribing!
You're a man of many talents, Road Agent. You seem to step up your game every video. Amazing technique. 👏

Now I can see how laser etching can be put to ~great~ effect. That's a very striking holster. Great work man.

Seriously gorgeous holster. I want so bad now.
Thanks for subscribing!
It looks so beautiful. Such talent and skill. 😃😃

Thanks fr subscribing!
Good work sir. Its very nice with amazing color.
I don't really want to sound like I'm complaining but I have trouble liking anything thats got dragons devils or demons on it.
But to each their own.
I understand. Thanks for watching anyway!
Damn, now I want to move to Texas more.
As long as you're ok with the heat, we've got plenty of room! Thanks for watching!
Next level 💯 👌
Very Nice!!!
Thanks for watching!
Wery nice work👌😎
Thanks ✌️
Excellent work! 👍👍
It was nerve racking watching the gold leaf process... 😬
Thanks for watching! It's actually a pretty easy process. But the foil is SO thin and fragile.... makes it finicky to work with. However, the sheen it gives off is so much better than metallic paint.
Seu trabalho é uma obra de arte parabéns.
Thank you very much!
Wow!
Thanks!
@@RoadAgentLeather you're welcome!
Wow,awesome ..jealous
Thanks for watching!
I think in a previous video you said that this color of dye was an old mix you were trying to use up. Either way, it is a really nice warm and rich color. The natural-colored border groove really is a nice accent with that color. Thanks for another stimulating and instructional video.
Thanks for watching (again)! lol. This was the LAST of that original color batch I had mixed up. It's finally gone!
Hey, one trick i use for painting inside those small etchings and engravings off my laser is to use a tipless hypodermic on a syringe. 18 or 20G typically do the trick. You can pick up syringes for pretty cheap at Tractor Supply Co, or similar livestock stores.
Thanks for subscribing. Excellent tip! I'll have t o give it a try.
@@RoadAgentLeatherHello, please can you make a shoulder holster for a Browning High Power pistol? I hope you do that, thank you
Nother great looking holster
Thank you!
Muito obrigado pelos seus ensinamentos. Que Deus lhe recompense em dobro por tudo que está para o próximo.
Thanks for watching!
😊
Really nice job on this! Do you use 8/9 ounce leather for your holsters? Thanks. Love your channel and your projects.
8-9 oz for unlined holsters. If lined, a little thinner.
Snazzy
Thanks for watching!
On this dragon holster.Looks like a dragon scale stamp, where did you get it and what size? Thank you Great work love your videos
Beautiful work. I’ve never been interested in leatherwork until now. Very inspirational. Out of interest, what is the technical name for the rivets/ studs used at the 12:20 time mark. ? I’m looking for something like this for some music stand restoration I undertake periodically. TIA.
They're brass rivets and burrs. Identical to the more common copper variety except ... well, they're brass. I get them from Tandy Leather.
Very nice holster. Simple, but elegant. A holster anyone would be proud to have and wear. In all your videos i have noticed you case your leather with glycerin saddle soap. I have been studying different techniques of casing leather and have been unable to find any discussion on using glycerin saddle soap. You seen to have the process down to an art.would you mind sharing your process. Thank you for sharing and keep up the great work.
This technique is something that was shown to me when I was a kid in cub scouts (way back in the 1980s). The soap really helps when you're doing a lot of carving and tooling. It lubricates the leather fibers; makes them more pliable. This in turn makes it easier for a swivel knife to glide through it and for stamps to make their impressions. It also has the benefit of slowing down drying time so you don't have to re-wet as often. Thanks again for subscribing!
Thank you for sharing. I amlooking forward to trying. Keep-em coming I can count on watching a beutiful project come together and learn something.@@RoadAgentLeather
Awesome work! Love watching.
Do you happen to sell pattern’s? I would love to purchase some if so.
Thanks
Nah, I don't have any patterns currently available (but will eventually have them on my Etsy page)
You know I am not much into gold leafing things, as I have seen how it can turn something that looks elegant into something cheap looking even though I have seen it turn something cheap into an elegant piece. But I have to say I really love the looks of that gun holster, and yes you should buy some real gold leaf and do something Star Trek themed. Like say a gun holster for an 1860 army or even a colt walker with the U.S.S. Enterprise N.C.C.-1701, or even a side profile of the U.S.S. Missouri on it. But then again if you did it with the U.S.S. New Jersey on it, you could donate it for their dry docking fund raiser.
Thanks for watching! I see you're a fellow Trekker.
Fantastic build and that dark colour after the gold is incredible! Two Questions: is the Saddle Soap to soften the leather and how long did you store it in that bag?
Thanks for subscribing! The saddle soap helps with the tooling and to delay the drying time. I only leave it in for a couple of hours.
👌👌👍👍

Thanks for watching! Unfortunately I'm unable to take custom orders at the moment.
Awesome way to start my Saturday! Quick question - after you antique, do you use another coat of resist as a sealer or does the Aussie conditioner at the end fill that role? Thank you!
Thanks for watching! Nope, no other coating over the antique.
@@RoadAgentLeather Thanks so much!
👍😎. Я не понял как фольга приклеилась к коже на рисунке дракона. Нагревал или как?
There's a glue I painted on it just before I attached the foil.
So you just cleaned the burnt part with plain water and it all came out? Did you let it dry or wipe it down right after the cuts? Very nice by the way.
Thanks! Yes; I clean off as much residual soot as I can with plain water. Then just let dry.
I wonder if vacuum pressure wouldn't yield similar results.
Thanks for watching! The gold leaf is actually fairly simple to apply. I think a vacuum bag would complicate the process.
Amazing work! How much time does it take to you make a holster like this?
Thanks for watching! This was actually a short build since there's no lining or toe plug. Just a couple of days. Most of that is waiting for dye and glue (foil size) to cure.
Very good
Beautiful and amazing craftsmanship!!! 💯🔥🔥🔥 What would you charge someone for a custom made piece like this?
Thanks for subscribing! Unfortunately, I'm unable to take custom orders at the moment.
@@RoadAgentLeather In general?
I've seen you use templates in most of your videos, I'd like to know where you got all the different templates that you've used?
Most of them I made myself. There's a few from my early videos that came from Will Ghormley's pattern line that Tandy used to sell.
That, is a beautiful holster ! How much do that go for ?!
Thanks for watching! This one was for an acquaintance of mine.
@@RoadAgentLeather cool ! Pro bono ? Radical.
Where do you get your holster patterns.? Do you scratch make patterns or get premade? Thank you for sharing
This is a pattern of my own design. But Etsy is a great source for patterns of all types.

I need a pen pouch
Thanks for watching! I haven't made a pen case yet. I'll have to look into it.
Hi, great video! I wrote you a dm on Instagram, I'm planning to do a similar work with a book cover in leather and I wanted to ask you for advice! Thanks😊
Just sent you a reply. Thanks for watching!
You destroy the original of the dragon by red paint
Thanks for watching! I agree it didn't really work the way I had intended . . . but the antique brought it back.
