    Well guys i was really skeptic about akido till i began training , first 3 days you feel like you will never learn it and you actualy cant feel how powerfull is it , once you feel your body your balance and harmony also when u feel how much pain in 1 basic technique you feel i know it doesnt look so impersive and it look like they playing some game or its not real but once you feel the pain from 1 technique or make a 30 kg heavier men to kneel with 2 basic movements you will beleve ! And actualy i didnt wanted to train akido just beacuse i was imagining it in real fight ,tomorow is my 5th day i just bought my equipment , guys whoever want to train that art you need to beleve in the rituals it has the history of it the philosophy of it ! Aikido is martial art which is made to make your opponent give up from you to remove his aggresion to you and make him go away ,aikido will make you good person with clean spirit living in harmony with your body and soul dont compare it with aggresive martial arts like MMA boxing , kick box muay thai or etc. And 1 last thing , grabbing the wrist is the training edition you can use every technique in aikido with someone whos going to punch you in the face like a boxer for example you just need to be really skilled so you can see the incoming punch :) Whatever, there are people for all martial arts , aikido is for these guys who are not aggresive in their nature, if you are calm person you dont like to fight a lot but you want to have perfect self-defense, body and soul harmony , great balance and extremely flexible body go and sign in some aikido club ! :)

      Akido is a fascinating martial art with a very interesting philosophy, you become an expert in movement and locks and it’s as much as training the mind as the body. However as a form of self-defense it suffers from excluding the strikes and kicks of it origin Jujitsu.

    I don't get why so many people are hating on some martial arts, especially Aikido...
    One of my first senseis told us "The most important purpose of each and every martial art is not effectivity but to improve, learn and stop comparing you to anyone"
    If your understanding of martial art is to learn some cool moves and skills to beat anyone then martial arts are not for you...
    Every art has its up- and downsides but what angers me the most are people who never took a single matial art lesson and criticize things they know nothing about

      It's because they are a bunch of ignoramuses who don't understand aikido (or budo in general) and are probably terrible martial artists themselves
      No real martial artist would ever claim certain arts are 'fake'....Real martial artists see the value in different arts

      ***** You're a perfect example of what I'm talking about....Your posts are not only ignorant, they are illiterate
      I can "assume" you aikido doesn't work in the street, or "assure"? I assure you, aikido served me very well on the street when I was attacked, and I was only 5th kyu at the time

    • @DukeZodiac
      @DukeZodiac 9 лет назад +25

      ***** didn't really got the point of your post but let me tell you something. I do not live in any kind of "manga world" nor am i brainwashed. I am a 26 year old medicine student from Graz (Austria). I practice martial arts since i am able to walk mainly because my father himself has his own kick-boxing training centre. I have black belts in aikikai aikido, judo and muay thai. I have also trained kick-boxing, brasilian jiu-jitsu and i had the pleasure to train pencack silat in indonesia for a good year. Of al this experiences i value my aikido training the most. Not only because of the self defense (wich is more effective than you can imagine) but because of the great amount of mental training and harmony. It seems to me like you are nothing more than an internet warrior with barely any knowledge of martial arts and literally no knowledge of the meaning of "budo"
      Its sad to see people like you critisice arts you cant even understand but it really doesnt matter. Have a good life

    To all that doubt aikido; I heard a true story once; The aikido master once traveled with a train with his teacher (even bigger master). And one drunk huge muscular guy was attacking and being all agresive to people on the train. And the student said to his teacher; "Now I will show you what I've learned." And prepared for fight. And a teacher calmly said back; "No, now you will learn again, watch me" And he stood up, went to the drunk guy and asked; Hy! what did you drink? It was probably good? And the drunk guy confused, replied; "Sake"! And the teacher said with a calm voice; "Oh Sake (rice wine)! I love Sake! Why don't we go off the train and I buy you some sake, we can drink together?" And the drunk guy calmed down and suddenly started to cry, saying; I'm really sorry, my wife left me, I don't know why I am like this, I'm really drunk...". And the aikido teacher hugged him, said that it's all ok, and everyone was fine. And then the teacher said to the student; "See - this is how you really use aikido!" (sorry, I shortened the story due to youtube comment lenght restrictions, but it's the true story).

      Matej Bukovec This story, while very nice. Can be applied to virtually any martial arts style. The idea is always to try and defuse the situation, to avoid the fight entirely. Physical defense is always the last resort, or it should be.

      Wodinn I agree off course, but I have also been training kickboxing and my teacher always wanted to fight someone, and when he did, he was bragging about it next day in the training. That's why I stopped training it. That is probably the main difference between "eastern" (judo, aikido, karate...) and "western" (boxing, kickboxing...) martial arts. In eastern they teach you respect towards yourself and you opponent and non agresivness in everyday life. , in western they only teach you how to fight. That's why I prefer eastern martial arts.

    What if your opponent has no arms?

  • @Jeudaos
    @Jeudaos 9 лет назад +48

    Being an individual in a wheelchair. This form of self defense technique is quite fascinating. For example. I can spin and rotate a shoulder around to manipulate the shoulder cuff for leverage. But I cannot, physically, spin my chair while pulling a man's arm, in the same direction. That is actually physically impossible in a wheelchair. However, I could rotate the arm, and with the opposite arm, spin away from the opponent. I'll have to keep studying different Akido techniques.

    I always seen a person said in youtube comment about aikido like "try to grab a boxer fist" or "try to catch a boxer punch". .it is completely they dont know anything about Aikido. .i'm not a person who train aikido, or what you called as Aikidoka. .i learn a Muay Thai under my father instruction and has been in the ring over 35 times. .but my father has a friend who teach aikido and believe me, he really can pin lock you even when you used "high speed punch". .my father, me and one of my father student has taste it for ourself. .he not simply just catch the fist or a punch. .what he do is catch the elbow. .pull you for a little to off balance and take you down for his sub-mission. .what he told me is simple. .you can withdraw your fist so quickly, but your elbow is still there. .it is such a logic explanation to me. .his reaction is so fast. .it is not as slow or as dumb as it show in demo. .try it with any aikido teacher around you. .i think all of them has same reaction to real fight. .fast, brilliant, and deadly. .i have taste it myself. .he said, in real fight, it is just you, your technic and your brain. .
    My father want to send me to learn Aikido from him. .it maybe in my another semester break. .it is honour to me if i can get to learn how to become more faster like him :)

    Well, great demonstration, but it's just a demonstration. Aikido techniques are used in military and police training, maybe not as such, but as added techniques with other Martial Arts. I served in the Legion as a Commando/ Sniper and learned some of these techniques there...and believe U me they do work, but mastering them takes a long time and lot of repetition.
    I'm an old man now, but the great thing about Aikido is that U don't have to be extremely fit to be able to use these techniques. It's all about timing and balance.
    I'm not here to argue, but someone said, that it doesn't work against a larger/heavier opponent. I'm 6'2 and in the legion days i weighted about 192 lbs, so have to say that these techniques do work. Does not matter if the opponent is 6'6 and weights 250...they will go down if one is faster and has knowledge about the technique, timing and balance.
    Be Well, and argue with finesse and respect, Adjutant D'Aho.

    I see a lot of interesting comments from people saying this isn't a real fight, etc. Very true. First off, I will list my experience so I can establish I know what I am talking about. 2nd degree black shotokan karate, black shito-ryu karate, brown judo, black jui-jitsu, master of kali-escima, training in gracie jui-jitsu with the american marines in Mayport, Florida and training in aikido when training in close protection/bodyguard work. I also have 20 yrs military experience, unarmed combat instructor and 5 overseas tours of duty. There is NO superior martial art, only superior men at applying their knowledge. Aikido demonstrations always look lame because they are done slow to prevent injuries. Aikido is taught in some form to the Secret Service members protecting the President so it must be effective don't you think? I have personally used joint locks to disarm people trying to hurt me with knives and on one occasion a very angry individual with an axe. Lots of armchair critics in here would do well to simply look at it for what it is, a demonstration.

I was at the end of the hall running towards him and all I remember was those 3 guys flying in 3 different directions. They were half his age and he just flung them around like ragdolls when they tried to punch him and they stayed down. They couldnt land a punch on him. Then just don't look at it. Aikido has an aggresive form, is called Aikijutsu. Also, if you know that Aikido was made using sword moves you ussualy know why you are in an Aikido Dojo. Nobody gives a fuck that you want to do that or that using Aikido and it doesn't work. For me it works because i'm into swords. You can't be clueless about a martial art and say ''it doesn't work because I've been into Aikido 3 months''. Also a martial art doesn't pretend to show you all the possible moves or tehniques avaible in the world. A martial art is the basis of your own style. I'm into Aikido and I can attack. It's not neccesary that you give me your hand, I'll take it from you and do my tehniques. And I don't want to hear that bullshit ''you can't grab my hand because I'm a superfast MT champion''. In a fight everything is relative as fuck.

For those of you who are skeptical of whether these techniques work in practice or self defense, i can tell you they are devastating, and if you don't go over your arm/wrist/shoulder will break/dislocate. Aikido is a self defence martial art, not for attacking. This art uses the opponent's force to redirect back to the opponent to overcome him. Suitable when your opponent is stronger than you or big in size. For old people who wants to defend himself, it is more suitable than Karate. Not much force needed.

      Min Maung Maung it's also really great in small confined spaces like a bathroom stall, elevator, places where you can't really throw a good punch, which gives aikido the advantage. What's even more amazing is how anyone can do it, and with enough training and practice, someone like me who weighs only 160 pounds can throw a giant 280 pound beefcake like they're only 10-30 pounds. It's a beautiful style of martial arts.

    In an old Jet Li movie he was asked what the purpose of the martial arts? He replied, "To defeat your opponent" "Wrong!" He was told. "The purpose of the martial arts is to improve yourself. The best way to defeat your opponent is with a gun." The martial artist who is never called upon to use the arts for violence has succeeded.

    • @Clown7916
      @Clown7916 10 лет назад +4

      Actually,the martial artists never called upon to use the arts for violence has no clue whatsoever whether what he/she is practicing is in any way effective. Hence full contact competition like boxing, kickboxing, wrestling, MMA, and other combat sports.
      Sure, they don't simulate a street-fight PERFECTLY, but they're a hell of a lot closer than doing forms and compliant drills excessively (as most TMA schools are wont to do).
      What's more, the people you fact on sparring and competition are often better fighters than the bums who try to attack you on the street. Or at least, this rule applies to combat sports like muay thai and judo - not so sure about a lot of the traditional martial arts styles and RBSD groups.
      And another thing - stop quoting movies. movies are entertainment, and are often very much divorced from reality. particularly so in the case of kung fu movies.

      Ryson Ominikara It's not that the martial artist is not to ever use the arts but that it is not their purpose. Self-improvement is. Sun Tzu (a pretty good fighting man) once said something along the lines of the greatest victory is the one won without a blow being struck. Is fighting, even if you are victorious something to brag about, to be proud of if you don't have right on your side? If it could have been avoided? If you spend life in the martial arts and never get in a fight, should you be ashamed? Is a jogger who never enters a race not a true runner? Is a weightlifter (like myself) who never enters a weight lifting contest (as I never have) not a true weightlifter?

    A lot of people just slap Aikido into the beat up and brawl category and then diss it because its 'soft', ITS NOT!!
    If you wanna be try-hard tough boy and go round KO'ing everyone on the street go pretend to do MMA or something! I say 'pretend' as even a well trained MMA fighter has self respect and inner strength NOT to go smashing peeps heads into the side-walk. Its the same for Aikido. Its about defence and mental training. I know for a fact I feel a hell of a better knowing I could probably take most people down without being arrested and probably jailed for 5 years for manslaghter if that jerks head starts to bleed inside because of these hollow macho KO's. Leave that sit to Hollywood and silly drunks on drunks at You Tube guys.

    It's so sad that such many people misunderstand Aikido. There must be no wonder how great it is if you know how much Aikido skills make use of physics and human body's movements. To many people who underrate this footage, those students may seem to be falling or jumping on their own just for making the master's skills work for real. But, their moves are already techniques all to protect themselves. Also, any other forms of martial arts, as long as it's originally focused on self-defense, require you to first master how to protect yourself by practicing basic routines over and over. Just because the demonstration is not in real fight style doesn't mean the skills presented are useless.

      THANK YOU. I try hard to explain this to people who don't understand, that one part of learning aikido is learning how to NOT GET HURT by it, and that's what you see in demonstrations and how we train. It makes it seem choreographed when in reality it's two halves of a whole, where if you only know one half you're not gonna feel too fantastic being on the receiving end. 😂

    WARNING: Aikido is an excellent martial art applicable only to choreographed situations and demonstrations. For any other circumstances please use other martial art or just die without any resistance. For better results try to film the video with opponents extremely lighter than you and without any previous experience in martial arts or defense techniques. A previous agreement with your opponents about not fighting back is suggested. Additional advice is available at the closest Aikido school in your home town.

      Aikido is much beyond the line of just an ordinary marterial arts. The reason they don't use Aikido in fights is that it could be extremely dangerous for those who don't know how to fall.
      You know Steven Seagal, he's an aikido master who was taught by Ueshiba Morihei, the founder of Aikido himself.

  • @ChuckerThe1
    @ChuckerThe1 11 лет назад +1

    Thats a valid point. I train in Aikido, our school takes this realistic approach to training. We have multiple defense lines where you must apply technique to random attacks. This way of practicing teaches a lot about the techniques and how to get them to work in a un choreographed manner. We deal with a lot of joint locks that are very painful if resisted. When training in Aikido, you as the attacker must be aware that resisting too much will get something broken. Then nobody can train. :)

    I think Aikido could be effective off of somebody grabbing you. Not so easy to grab somebody's wrist or hand in mid air when they're swinging at you full speed. and if they're a trained Fighter...forgot about trying to grab their wrist or hand, you won't even see the punch coming before you're knocked out.

    • @Germkiller42
      @Germkiller42 10 лет назад +54

      I practice Aikido so I can hopefully explain this properly. We learn that when defending against a punch, you aren't grabbing for the wrist. That's impossible. You move quickly and grab their upper arm. From there as you turn you guide their arm downwards and, while maintaining connection and grip, move your hand down to the wrist. From there, they are off balance from having their arm swung behind him and forced to the ground by your own stance. Then you can step back and apply the kotegaeshi.
      Honestly, martial arts always talk about what'll happen in a real fight. In a real fight, there are so many variables there is no real way to say what will happen. The greatest martial art is adaptation

    • @christopherdigman7435
      @christopherdigman7435 10 лет назад

      Germkiller42 i totally agree with you and i also pratice aikido and aikido is execellent because it calms the mind and i been doing aikido for 3 years now and i been told that if you where to do a move when someone grabs you is after you break the connection and grab their wrist their is a pressure point in the elbow and if you where to apply enough pressure to it you could damage it if you where to do that

    • @randmnumber
      @randmnumber 10 лет назад +2

      Germkiller42 Do you do sparring sessions or have competitive fights in Aikido? I agree with you when you say you can never know what will happen in a real fight. That's why any martial art is useless unless you actually fight/spar with a considerable amount of resistance, in my opinion. You can be in for a big shock when you get into a real fight and find out your opponent won't allow you to get that arm lock that seemed so easy in the gym against a person who was allowing you to do it with little resistance.

    • @Germkiller42
      @Germkiller42 10 лет назад +5

      randmnumber that would be the case if the people I practice with don't give resistance. In early training, there is little resistance so they can practice the movements fully and learn the flow of it. Once you get to higher ranks, there is no going easy. They resist a lot. And we do have something like that. It's called randori. 1 man vs. multiple men. In higher ranks, they are allowed to attack whichever way they choose. They can kick, grab, punch, elbow, bite etc. There is absolutely no resistance in a proper randori. Aikido when applied against someone with no training on taking ukemi is dangerous. That's why there are all the flips and rolls in Aikido. It's to protect the uke

    • @shakedrock4301
      @shakedrock4301 10 лет назад

    • @bigeasy356
      @bigeasy356 9 лет назад +1

      templar you need to distract your opponent to grab the wrist. grabbing the wrist can happen just as fast as a punch to the face if you think about it. once the aiki practitioner has that wrist, it's game over. that's what atemi is for. some styles use it to injure, but most aikido styles use atemi for distraction

    • @templar777able
      @templar777able 9 лет назад

      i studied kali i know how to distract but still its hard. I try to incorporate other martial arts technique. What I do sometimes if I missed catching it ill trap it by flexing my arm sort of a pincer grab then he'll try to counter it but what i'm really waiting for is he's counter etc.

    I have training in multiple styles (Jiujitsu, Aikido, Okinawan Karate, Ninjutsu, even some Kung Fu) and have found strengths and weaknesses in them all. This demo is okay in that he has a couple of decent take downs. People, its more about the martial artist and less about the art. It would be effective to use a solid kick from Karate to disable an attacker if you know how to use it, or it would be effective to use a strong hijiotoshi (elbow drop) from Aikido if you know how to use it; or to just choke them out Jiujitsu style...if you know how to use it. People get way too hung up on the specific art, and therefore miss the point. IMO get tools from them all and learn how to use them REALLY well. This demo showed a couple of useful techniques but as a demo not live combat. Take it for what it is and move on.

    • @harmonybykarate1
      @harmonybykarate1 Год назад

      Any staged demonstration in many arts can look spectacular. On the street or war if it is not simple, it will not work. Basics of Aikikdo, Karate, Kung Fu,Judo, Boxing, Muay Thai, etc.. are great. Anything beyond basics will not serve most people in real combat. Not to mention there is no longevity in complexity of movement. If people want to train for life, it is healthier for the body to simplify.

      The result would be even more dynamic. Aikido take the energy of the attacker and uses it against them in subtle, and not so subtle ways. The more energy, the more effective the art.

    • @mack7963
      @mack7963 10 лет назад +1

      do you not think robert, that its more likely that someone who is trained wouldnt be attacking someone?

    • @mikemcguire3676
      @mikemcguire3676 9 лет назад

      The biggest benefit of the art is not the physical advantages that it provides, but rather the awareness, and mental stability to avoid a situation to begin with. In the real world, an Aikido technique will never look as pretty as it does in the dojo. What it will do is provide you with the physical advantage (if you were unable to avoid the altercation) to defend yourself better than the average person.

    The problem with they way they train their attacks is how unrealistic it is. Usually its one person running full tilt with their arms extended like a zombie, or catching a punching by the wrist and doing some complex move. Most people retract their fists(even someone untrained) and they'll be more punches than one coming or a knee to the stomach. An assault is not a pretty thing. Its vicious and you need to train that way.

      ***** Calling someone an imbecile is not a real rebuttal. It's something children do when they realize they are wrong, but have not other argument. Aikido is based of the marital arts practiced by the samurai in feudal Japan. Although the effectiveness is in question in the martial arts community, with a doubt an Aikido student is much more well prepared for combat than someone not trained in any martial art at all.
      "An oriental is an oriental"
      That's where your credibility fell apart, you revealed yourself to be an ignorant racist that just makes fun of the things he can't understand. Also, with that logic, how is England any different from Italy. Or how is Germany any different form France. They're all just European barbarians that believe the same nonsense and are such awful fighters they had to use guns to even make a name for themselves, right?

    • @alessandropomes6357
      @alessandropomes6357 9 лет назад +1

      Careful Planning I'm practicing Aikido since two years, I have some problems with the knees, a bit fragile, but I talked about it with my instructor and he considers my problems. Never had a issue. Moreover, most of aikido practitioners are not that tough like in the video, so don't be scared :) aikido is a non-competitive martial art, where it's really important to enter in confidence with your opponent, and reach the end of the technique together in order not to harm anybody, it's the art of "no resistance".
      Just try, keep trying, and if you don't like a dojo because they take it too seriously (really a few) try another one.

      Some people train to fight against other fighters for sport. There is a complete difference in fighting another fighter and having longevity against a trained fighter or learning self defense. Most attacks on the street last seconds and that's what people like you that comment and bash aikido don't realize. You have seconds to react to an attack. You're not in a cage testing a style. Aikido works in real life self defense. I imagine most people training to fight aren't out to kill other people so I don't assume I'll be attacked by an MMA fighter. If I'm attacked, it'd probably be by some hoodlum. Sport fighting and self defense are totally different. Stop the bashing it's apples and oranges.

    • @keithwoodsdesign
      @keithwoodsdesign 8 лет назад +1

      Also I know there is soft and hard styles of aikido. Where I train it's hard style and I even know kill strikes if I have to use them. Self defense isn't anything like the movies.

      +Keith Woods Aikido works against people willingly giving up their limbs, and doesn't have sparring to test your skills in a live situation. Boxing+BJJ works against trained killers in the UFC. But yeah let's keep on pretending Aikido has something up its sleeve....

  • @roxyrolla84

    I have also studied silat and youre right aikido is very complementary. Effectiveness of any technique depends upon training many years and training with an intensity and mindset that this will save your life. This is why bouncers are tougher then black belts.

      koko40800 I used to work out with Master Chun Lee in rosemead calif. He teaches Hapkido which is very much like Aikido, I asked him one day about Aikido and he said he understood it. He used his heel to kick me on the leg one time, hit a pressure point and my leg went numb. He also showed me those wrist locks, they are very painful. It takes years of practice to learn this stuff, I'm no good at at. I practiced the Hapkido on sat. an optional class, during the week I did taekwondo.

    • @asteriskcolon
      @asteriskcolon 7 лет назад

      It's a self defense art. Going into the ring is not practicing good self defense.
      Aikido, with its roots in sword arts, would bring a sword to the fist fight if it had to fight, in the name of good self defense. And it's fair enough -- sword techniques are actually trained as a part of the Aikido curriculum, not so with Muay Thai, BJJ, wrestling, Judo, standard Karate, etc. You can swing a sword and have it actually be an "Aikido technique"
      ...or are you the kind of person who would make the same comment about a Kendoka? :)

    Although i have practiced many arts in martial arts and boxing and others AIKIDO IS MY FAVORITE ART because it is very effective when done correctly to the students what is one lesson a master AIkido would teach you that AIKIDO DOES NOT ATTACK IT ONLY DEFENDS therefore with there own style and these words if i was one of the students instructed by the expert AIKIDO FIGHTER to attack i would simply say no and i do not recommend you to attack me less i have to show you my defense but ye we need to practice so maybe? i may attack him if he instructs for education reasons as he can then teach
