Based on analysis from Tennis Insights, the shot quality of Djokovic's forehand (calculated in real-time by analysing each shot's speed, spin, depth, width, and the impact it has on the opponent on a 0-10 scale) can go above 9.1 for the last few months this year, it can even reach crazy number like 9.6 for some matches when he is in zone. And obviously he is being more aggressive this year, around 25% of the shots he is playing in attack(compared to 3 years ago it was around 20%), the conversionscore ( the percentage of points the player won when he is in attack) is also being higher. The average depth and consistency are very impressive too.
Your comments are very insightful. While most people focus on Djokovic's excellent backhand, Djokovic's forehand is turning into an increasingly threatening weapon for him. Djokovic's distinctive forehand preparation is quite crucial, it creates excellent body turns and coiling through the strength of his shoulders, hips and torso, which act like a tightly compressed spring that gathers body power quickly. In the construction of the forehand technique chain, Djokovic’s choice of the 3/4 Western forehand grip and semi-open stance allows him to combine the benefits of multiple stances and gives him great match-holding ability and flexibility in attacking and defensive transitions Besides forehand strengthening that you mentioned, Djokovic's other skills such as returning continued to shine, as he topped the tournament with whopping 18 return aces. In addition, he was quite efficient in converting his advantage, with 96% probabilities of winning the set after breaking serve. To sum up, Djokovic's forehand has always played a considerable role in his technical composition, even as the main advantage in his 41 consecutive wins in 2011. It wasn't until he reached unprecedented heights of forehand power after his winter training in the 2022 off-season that people noticed how formidable his forehand was on the field. I have always said this, since a few years ago. People always talk about his backhand, which is great and extremely solid. But it is mostly his forehand what is doing damage and attacking during rallies. Just study his matches tactically and you will see it. His forehand is just money. And over the years he's improved it even more, hitting so cleanly and precisely.
His forehand certainly has improved a lot. He's putting much more of his weight into the shot, rather than falling back onto his hip as Andy Murray still does.
It has sufficient amount of everything: power, top spin or flatness when is required, and most important one: stabilisation on critical points. it's the perfect compound of tennis strokes I've ever witnessed. Yeah, I know Del Potro's is powerful as hell, Federer's is good looking and penetrating, like alacarz' one, and Nadal's forehand is very fatiguing to handle due to top spin and height on long matches, But Nole's is suitable for all situations.
There are many things to admire about his forehand, but what stands out to me is how quickly he goes into attack mode when, even before the ball coming to him has crossed the net, he recognizes the neutral ball, and is preparing to go big, and on top of that, he can effortlessly change direction better than anyone who has ever played the game. A genius making the impossible look easy.
In the AO2023 Nole literally assassinated 7 players. Unbelievable that he lost only 1 set across 7 matches which is 21 sets won and JUST 1 SET LOST. Unreal dominance
Honestly at this point in his career, he has probably the best two handed backhand in history, one of the best forehands, and one of the best serves (his serve is harder and more accurate now than ever before)
Djokovic has been hitting 150+ km/h forehand winners in a casual fashion this year. He can hit any winner anytime he wants. This reminds me of the Prime Federer
Shame he lost at the Davis Cup, I thought that most of his forehands against Norrie and Sinner were very good. Hopefully he keeps the forehand and his overall game big and aggressive for his last few years.
He had to play more aggressively than before at the 2023 AO because his hamstring was injured so that he could not use his signature sliding backhand so oftenly.
It's not really underrated, it just everything else in his game is really up there too. Djokovic isn't going to run around many backhands to unload a forehand winner on you, that's just not his game. Fed's forehand is an absolute monster when you give him a sliver of daylight to load up on it, however he tends to miss way more than Novak.
When Djoko plays his best, he's looking to go around the backhand to hit a forehand more often. But his usual level doesn't incorporate that fh as much
Against Sinner in the final of the ATP Finals Djokovic was hitting 86 mph AVERAGE forehand speed. That is a ballistic average, certainly not "not much power". Djokovic has put on muscle and to go with his technique it produces big speed. He has outhit Alcaraz's FH this year when playing him in Cinci and Turin.
and now he's hitting that forehand at 140+ mph because he wants to. Medvedev was saved in Dubai, by Nole's mistakes, but at Roland Garros not even Alcaraz will be left standing.
His skills are at an all-time high at this point in his career. He may not be as good as he once was in terms of fitness and power, but he has acquired enough skill to compensate for that. He may not be at his peak right now, but he is probably at the most complete of his career.
