Some people blame Vote For The Worst (that I dont think they were that strong at all) others like Simon said think he appelead to people cheering for the average guy.. I still dont get it.. Veeery average singer, nothing unique, no style, no look, and charisma? Everytime he had a chance to talk/defend himself from critics he came off as a douch. I blame Simon on his and Anthony´s going so far.. Have him just gave them cold/meh comments instead of display how much he disliked both, they could have gone earlie on. Funny enough that both went home on their best week (still above the rest of the competition tho). PS: Paula was sooo high for most of this season.
The fact that Jessica (who I wasn't even a big fan of) was told she was unlikeable but Scott came off scottfree (no pun intended) I well never understand.
Because he can sing and he had the "underdog" and "outcast" vote; not sure if you watched any of the other contestants that were eliminated before him but he was as good or better than them (even Constantine who just wasn't that good, just watch his Nickelback performance, he was more of a Broadway guy than a recording artist)

Thankfully America got it totally right that season with Carrie Underwood winning. She's the best thing to ever happen to American Idol.
