The Advantages of a Four Day School Week
    education.seattlepi.com/advant...
“A four-day school week is a relatively new and innovative idea gaining popularity with students and teacher across the United States. For some, the advantages of attending school only four days per week far outweigh the potential disadvantages.”
The Effect a Four-Day School Week Has on Teachers and Students
    www.uscranton.com/resources/te...
“What if instead of a five-day week, school districts switched to a four-day week? A concept dating back to the 1930’s, economic hardships now have districts examining and implementing this option more than ever before.”

My problem wasn't the length of the week but the repetition of what was being taught. We'd be taught a topic, practice it, I'd have it learned, then we would repeat it for a week because other people didn't pick it up yet. I skipped a lot of school and still did good on tests and finals.

+Millad Bahrami Some schools already start later in the day. Instead of maybe school starting around 7:20, it now starts around 8:20. The biggest picture is pretty much the pros and cons of pushing back the starting time for school. How it affects the people that live in that city/area. Though, pushing back school isn't something I am for since children and teens pretty much spend a lot of time up late doing whatever. It may help improve students to pay more attention in class rather than doze off. This is just my opinion but it's whatever you want to believe.

Kinda hard to find a job where I live with the current job climate in Ireland. Which is why I'm still doing full time education.
That said, I don't know how bringing up online education comes into play regarding my question in my OP.

    • @Sweenus987
      @Sweenus987 8 лет назад

+Jimmy Strudel You're probably right about what Ludwig was saying, though when I said homework, I meant the crap teachers give you for you to do at home that may or may not get corrected the next day or time you have that class.
So you can see my confusion in regards to bringing it up in the first place.
A part from that, doing online education away from home, is it part time education?
I figured one of the main allures to online education is the ease of doing it at home.

I think a four day week of learning is good, as long as there are activities on the fifth day that can be chosen (and that are free). Not all households can afford to have the child(ren) at home for an extra day. This day of fun activities is also good for the outlook on school: if there are fun things associated with going to school, the kids are probably less resentful of studying.

I'm a senior in high school, and we've done the 4 day school week for I think 6 years now. Our school switched to the 4 day school week to save money, saw that test scores were staying the same, then decided to keep the 4 day school week.
If any of you are wondering how much nicer it is for students, it's insane how much of a difference one day can do.

Starts in mid August and ends in late May
Starts at 8:15 and ends at 3:30
Gets a week and a half off for Christmas, two days for Thanksgiving and Three days for Easter.
Is required to have a semester final in every class
Has a three minute passing period and a half hour for lunch
    Is super cheap and strict
Has a dress code that dictates everything but socks
Has a stupidly short rule on guys hair length
    Has 80's cameras literally everywhere
Is so undersized the councillor's office is literally a closet
Is just a terrible place to be in general

Kill me for saying this but I honestly wish that North America would change summer holidays. I really don't like a whole 2 months in a row off. It messes with my academics, my sleep schedule, my social life, even my eating habits. I'd much prefer it if there was a 2 week break every 2 months or so. The same amount of time off, just spread out more. My class did a whole debate on this and I was the ONLY person to say yes to this. Do any other students agree with me or am I still the only one? Also, I'd like having school 4 days a week. (Unless the school day starts earlier not ending later then no thank you) I like being in school, it's nice to be out of the house.

That's actually really interesting because in Australia a lot of people (at least at my school) wish that our holidays could be like America where you get like 2-3months off. While here, we get like 2 wks off between every term (approx 3 months) and 6 weeks off between the end of the school year and the start. So I guess we just want what we dont have? ahaha :)

As a person with Anxiety and on and off Depression, a four day week sounds amazing, preferably Wednesday as the missing day. Being in honors classes along with all my after school activities is time consuming and stressful. Having an extra day in the week to get things done would be extremely beneficial to my mental health and to my grades. I wouldn't feel like I'm drowning at the end of every week.

School needs to only be open 4 days a week, have little to no homework, start later but end at the same time or earlier, bring back naptime, have frequent breaks, actually teach important things in life, like economics, and not how to find the value of a slope's X, and provide a good environment for all. Then students will actually want to go to school to learn, and will significantly increase student performance.

This will also make it easier to get a job after school because hiring value of a high school diploma will be raised and look better than it does now in terms of gauging practical skill.

One day at school should be 4 hours from 11:30-4:15 (this is included free time between classes and eating) 119*4=596 hours of school every year, that would be good :) and does this lead to bad perfermance at school? No! In Finland they have only 600 hours of school every year, thats the country with fewest hours of school and they are one of the best in school in the world!

My school kind of follows a 4-day week. I attend a regular public high school in the mornings (5 days a week), but a technical high school for medical training in the afternoons for only 4 days a week. I've only been on this schedule for a couple of weeks, but I've found it's actually really nice, even though I'm spending an hour more in the classroom for those 4 days. We get a lot more enrichment time, one on one time with the teacher, and even work time to finish homework and projects to counteract the extra time spent at school. I've noticed that I feel much less tired and stressed than when I went to school 5 full days a week.

We've been lowering the number of school days for decades now and our scholastic level has actually been going down. Most countries that use a shorter day but longer week get better benefits. Longer school days only work if you actually do go in depth into the material. In other countries this is accomplished in less time and shorter days through better teaching methods and cram schools for those with learning deficits. While it is true changing from a two day to three day weekend does not result in much learning loss, the fact that we are one of the few countries with a long summer break does. Also, as presented in the video France gives Wednesday the day in the middle of the week off and typically has government funded nurseries or even school led field trips on Wednesday's so the parents need not take off work and learning loss is prevented. Here in the U.S. where we have no parental leave, mostly private day-care and a five day work week we would be turning these kids into latch key kids for that day-off. It would be better to have a half day of intensive schooling and start infants(4 to 8 yrs) off with a four day week, move to a five day week with juveniles(9 to 12), and a six day week for adolescents(13 to 16) then move back to a four day week but a whole day instead of half a day for young adults(17 to 20). In other words go to a old-style British system of primary school, middle school, preparatory school and finishing school.

Why don't we just abolish school if it's so bad. First it started "too early", then schools gave "too much homework", now school weeks are "too long" geeze, what's next? it's getting ridiculous.
Kids need to learn to handle Long work weeks, and more work and early mornings, because when they grow up into the work force, they're going to have to deal with those things, just like Dress codes in schools help to teach kids to dress appropriately in a professional setting. this is ridiculous, they're slowly "recommending" that parents and teachers stop trying to prepare children for adulthood, even though that's the most important part of their jobs.

    • @SoganaxSaeki
      @SoganaxSaeki 8 лет назад +4

+GheyForGames No, no it's not. working is good, and to make more money and accomplish more, you have to work harder. That's a good thing. We live in a society where everyone want the world to revolve around them and their wants and needs, but society can't properly function that way, both people and society need set rules, routine and order, it helps our society, and our brains function properly. The world cannot meet absolutely everyone's needs and wants entirely and people need to learn to do things that they sometimes don't want to, because the world works in a give and take system, you reap what you sow, you get what you give, etc, etc, etc and if you want extra, you have to GIVE extra, not just demand it and expect to get what you want.

    • @kuyaleinad4195
      @kuyaleinad4195 8 лет назад +4

Most important reason why kids are still dropped to school even though it's bad:
      1) The government needs a place to put kids so that their parents can work and pay taxes.
      2) Kids need to learn to get jobs when they're adults
Nope just joking :P 2) should be 1) and 1) should be 2)

    • @SoganaxSaeki
      @SoganaxSaeki 8 лет назад +2

Kuya Dan school isn't bad, kids need to learn and they need to be around other kids so they can learn how to be social and how to behave around others. I feel like i'm talking to a couple of 12 year olds who don't like school. To get a good job, you need an education and social skills, now more than ever, and that is why school is important. Good jobs require early starts, long hours and long work weeks, because you actually have to EARN the money you make. I know the media makes it seem like just anyone can become a superstar or a CEO, but that's not true (unless you have a millionaire parent who can either buy the position for you, or hand it down to you). Life doesn't work that way. For all of us normal, "poor" people, we have to know what we're doing and work hard and make sacrifices to get where we want to be in life, and school gives us the education to know what we're doing, but without determination, hard work and sacrifice, we cannot get there, and if someone isn't willing to go the extra mile and work hard, they don't deserve to make all the money that comes with the position they want. Simple as that.

    • @kuyaleinad4195
      @kuyaleinad4195 8 лет назад +4

SoganaxSaeki Oh sorry for commenting that 'school is bad' when I actually think of it being the latter.
School Education is very important and coming from a developing country I know how many unfortunate people who would do anything (even work alongside studying) to get PRIMARY education. A few Elderly people even went back to primary school as it's their dream to finish primary education as poverty prevented them from doing this years before.
Due to this, I highly value school and want to learn.
My initial comment was merely a joke that 'school is bad' and said the reason was that the government is more concerned at freeing up parents to work rather than giving young people the education required. It wasn't ment to reflect my views on Education but I can see why you may think of this.
However, there are still some problems and the largest of which being that some teachers are teaching students to past tests rather than teaching them to form an understanding on the subject being taught. This isn't good in my opinion. I now live in the UK and the government is reducing coursework and increasing tests which isn't good.

GO SAGE INTERNATIONAL!!!!! That's where I go for my high-school. If people are wanting a student perspective of a four day week, here it is:
A four day week feels like an improvement from five days due to not having that 'hump day' where you have no motivation to continue through the week. When it's Tuesday or Wednesday my morale to get through the week is that I don't have to deal with school on Friday. It makes it easier to not dread going to school, but actually excited to go and continue learning.
I know as a student, who has a four day school week, that I have 'x' amount of time to get my work done, but I get an extra day on the weekend to complete it while also having Fridays to do other activities. My school is able to pack the same amount of information you would learn in a five day week in a four day week. That helps the students with not having to deal with another day of grinding through school, but it feels like we are making progress with our learning faster compared to schools who take five days to teach the information.
In total, four day school weeks is beneficial for both the students and teachers to improve them selves as members of education and I believe it is something for all school districts to highly consider as an educational option.

Unfortunately my private school that I'm already overpaying in tuition is actually extending their school year longer, and changing school days from 8:30am to 3:15pm, to 9:20am to 5pm
Last year, my whole grade was barely getting any sleep, with nearly everyone half joking and half angry about how every day they were staying up until 2, 3, 4 or even 5 am getting their work done for school, and barely having any time for their hobbies or after school activities anymore.
Apparently they want us to be pulling all nighters all the time now.

Man I wish I had a 4 day week during grade and highschool.!
It wasn't until College where I did everything I could to create an awesome schedule where I could cram everything into only 4 days and actually have 1 free day! Some years I managed to only have 1 course, which was awesome cause I had the rest of the day for myself!
It helped! Having 3 free days per week really helped me relax and have time for myself (playing video games, duh!). Okay okay, so I did homework and studied for exams too, but I usually only spent 1 of my "free days" per week for that kinda stuff so I always had 2 days for gaming, going out and relaxing! We need it!!!
One reason why I didn't have amazing grades in gradeschool and highschool is because I had to go to school 5 days a week, they gave out so much friggin homework so rather than doing my homework or studying hard after school or on weekends, I just did everything as quickly as possible to maximize the amount of free time I had for gaming and other stuff!
But in college, I did so much better because it was less stressful! With 3 days or 2 1/2 days of free time, it made school life so much easier and I got really good grades and worked harder too.

I think a longer school day with fewer classes per day could be good, but here's a different model of education for 7th - 12th grades, called Freeform schooling (it has a 5-day school week):
    Days 1 & 2:
3 Classes (A, B, & C); ~2 hours long each, with a 5 min break in the middle of class, and a 10 min break between classes. Lunch is 2 hours long, and can be taken between classes A & B, or between classes B & C.
Total school day length: 8 hours.
    Day 3:
Elective day; Students are involved in the extra curricular activities of their choice; sports, theatre, robotics, animal husbandry, gardening, mechanics, social clubs, etc. Students may also opt to work with other students on any class assignments and projects during this day (not limited to just their classmates, but could also include the instructors and other students that have previously passed that class).
Total school day length: 6-10 hours (depending on the specific activities).
    Days 4 & 5:
    3 Classes (D, E, & F); Same set-up as Days 1 & 2, but for three other classes.
Total school day length: 8 hours.
The classes are broken into 3-week long "sessions" (10 mandatory sessions per school year, with an additional 3 optional sessions available), at the end of which the students take a comprehension test for the class material (or submit a class project or other assigned requirement).
There's a "Breather week" between sessions with half-days designed for students and instructors to finish grading and post results of the prior session, and for students to sign up for the next session. Day 3 (extra curricular day), does not have a Breather week, as there are no tests to grade; rather, students gain credit for participation, and may engage in one, or multiple activities, and stay with or change them as they like.
Each class can be taken as many times as a student needs to pass the class. Each class is pass/fail, with passing being equivalent to a 3.0 (B grade) or better.
Instructors teach the same 12 hours of the classes they teach, each session that class is offered (which may rotate thru 2 or 3 sessions, depending on class sign-ups).
Many classes have a prerequisite class they must have already passed in order to attend them. Students choose what classes they want and when (allowing them to take classes with their friends).
In order to graduate, students must have passed all the MGC's (Minimum Graduating Class). These classes represent the capstone of mandatory education standards.
Students have a total of 6 school years to pass all their MGC's. If they do not graduate by the end of their 6th year, they enter "intensive study", where their shortcomings are identified, and they are required to work solely on those everyday of the week until they pass.
Students passing all their MGC's in under 6 years may opt to graduate early, continue taking other classes they wish, or even becoming student aids (tutors and class helpers) for classes they have already passed, for the remainder of the 6 years.
The Freeform schooling model has not yet been adopted by any public schools yet (as far as I know), but has many advantages over traditional educational models. The biggest advantage is in giving the students control over what they learn, and how fast.
This model encourages students to take responsibility for their choices, and teaches valuable lessons that translate directly to real life (such as being self-motivated, meeting deadlines, and discovering what they like and don't like, not to mention the self-esteem boost and intrinsic respect this model provides for students).
What do you guys think of this educational model for grades 7-12?

I thought college would give me the opportunity to get out of school but really I'm spending more time on school. M&F I have classes from 8am -4pm 9(neverminding that I have to wake up t 6am) Wednesdays I have school from 8am-9pm and tues&thurs I have school from 11am-3pm. Then immediately I have to go to work directly after, not even going home til 10 pm. For all of you who don't work while in college you must be privileged with parents who can give you the world., and yes I have a scholarship but that doesn't pay for my gas (car) and food(since I live off campus). I've never worked so hard in my life, I loved it at first until I fainted at work from dehydration/exhaustion.

We just need to learn stuff that we might actually use in our lives, and have no homework.

I think a 4 day week for anybody would be awesome. I have bad anxiety and it really helps break up the week for me. The problem with 4 day school weeks is there would have to be some child care program implemented because now a days most parents both work.

in my area, students k-5 have an extra hour becuase of bad reading scores. They don't get off until four, only get recess once a week and then are required to do homework. they really only get about an hour or two to do anything not school related like sports or games. A day off would mean that for four days a week they get to eat and do school work with very little break time. pardon the grammar, I'm tying on a phone.

Hey emmm i'm from france and I'd just like to point out that what you said about wednesday being "the day for kids" and "a whole day of school" yeaaaah that is true but it goes untill middle school and then throught middle school and high school you'll work on wednesdays mornings. Some schools (like mine) even have classes on saturday mornings and wednesday afternoons. Our classes are mostly 8 to 5 everyday and depending on your options you might even finish at 6. French high schoolers weeks are super charged because french people love very long vacation so we have long weeks to compensate.

Well i went from working 5 days for 8 hours, to 4 days for 10 hours, the day certainly feels really long but DAMN that 3 day weekend feels good when it's over. So i imagine it would be a similar thing for school kids.

DNews, thanks for sharing. I never knew that there are such things as 4 days of school. In my opinion, shorter days of school is a great idea but may cause a lot of effects, especially signal parents. If adults have a high paying income, then it may not be much of a concern, but if the income is lower or even minimum wage, then it would be harder to provide for the family or pay for DayCare too. Talking about DayCare... do you have anything about Private DayCare/DayCare Center/Home Care. I know that every states and country has different laws. Most 10-13 yrs old children hate going to DayCare. Now, children, you don't want that to happened, right.?

Some of the schools in my country have 6 days per week but their school days are shorter so technically my 5 days per week is already a set of longer school days. Can't imagine what it would be like if it were longer.

I work two jobs, and for one of them, I only get paid when I have time to work on it (there is no specific schedule, but if I do not find time to work on it, I will be fired and possibly never hired by another person for the same job). One day off would give me a whole day that I can work on my second job!
Plus, when I have 3 day weekends, I don't spend the majority of the weekend doing my homework.
Now they just need to set high school start times to be 8am and lighten the homework load (have it ACTUALLY be a light review like the teachers say it is) and watch the scores skyrocket!)

I do think that a shorter school week would benefit the kids, especially if the teachers use most of the other days for training, a lot of public school teachers are just not good teachers but there is usually at least one good one in the school and that could rub off on the bad ones a bit.

I would love a 4 day week. I can’t handle sitting in those awful chairs for 7.5 hours a day for 5 days a week. During the summer my back feels fine but during the school year I am in so much pain. School feels like a punishment for doing nothing wrong.

OR just go to virtual school, complete any assignments when you want to, middle night, middle day, etc. Anytime. This also means alot more free time. With 3 assignments per class PER WEEK that I need to complete. I can literally do all my weeks work in 2 days and have a 5 day weekend for work/etc

Sunday night-through-Thursday-afternoon boarding schools work well in some countries - kids just study and sleep four days a week
