- Video showing turf cutting in Ireland done the traditional way with a turf spade ( sleán) and a wooden wheel barrow carrying it of to the spread field for it to be dried. In this video the narrator explains what Irish peat is, how it was formed and how important it was to the people of Ireland. We have other videos showing the turf cutting and life on the bog on our channel. Subscribe now goo.gl/E5V6sB
I was sent here because of the poetry of Seamus Heaney, "Digging" in my English class. Thanks for the history lesson! It was also very satisfying watching the spade make those clean cuts. :D
We used this in English class, as well. Hello from New Jersey!
Thank you for keeping this history alive, and available for us worldwide.
Reminds me of being dragged to the bog as a disgruntled 10 year old by my Dad and having to miss mission impossible or Hawaii Five O. Then quite to my surprise one day he said he would no longer being going to cut turf (when I was about 45) and all of a sudden I missed it greatly. Now I look back with fondness to my days in the bog with my Dad. He passed away this March at 91.
We used to cut it vertically though - never knew some people cut it horizontally.
Stephen Flaherty now its left to the polish and others
Same here. Only twas the meadow,, and missing elvis films
Kerryman?
I really like these videos. I like seeing the old ways, the countryside, and seeing something between harvesting, foraging, and garden work.
When I would read of peat in books I always saw it as turf, harvested off the top of the land & then rolled or compacted - I never realized it was so deep.
I am Romanian and I tell Jack one of the Irish worker , the heating bills is very high in Romania in winter, and he tell me why you don't cut peat , I tell him I don't know what is that and searching on the internet I discovered , god bless Ireland, uk and all countries provides serious working place for the Romanians
Great videos. Takes me back a logn time. My Uncle John James Rosborough cutting turf in Alla near Claudy Turf is one of the things that I can still remember the smell of when burning (been living in Italy since 1980). He had no tractors 2 Cyldesdales + all the machinery
I came here from watching a video about Sauron from Lord of the rings and what he looked like, how did this happen? And why am I still watching this? It's addictive.. I can't stop. Somebody help, do something, ANYBODY!!
No one acknowledges how oddly satisfying this is
Great knowledge to have. I ran across the term "peat bog" and just had to know what it was. Very interesting.
Yes, likewise here.
How in the hell did I end up here? Started by watching a man get arrested and somehow ended up watching a man cut turf?
You're not in the Weird Part of RUclips yet, you're in the Informational Side of RUclips! 😉
I actually searched for it
I got here from Liam the Mechanic engine vids! lol
John Smith lol 😂
I ended up here from watching a video about sauron from lords of the rings. What am I doing! 😂
Well done on getting a valuable historical resource onto RUclips and a wider audience.
Thanks for the historical education. 😊✌
I’ve wondered about this for AGES! Whenever I’d come across it in a novel, I couldn’t picture people digging and burning...dirt? Thanks for informing us it’s actually a fossil fuel. The video is mesmerizing. Oh and the bonus info about thatching! Thanks much!
Truly informative and enjoyable video!! Loved every minute of it!! Have learned more from this video than any visit to Ireland or any book on this subject would have provided me!!
i love this
I enjoy this moments when we gather the turf and take them home for heating
I remember doing this as a boy helping my friends dad back in the 1970s .
Great video. Thank you for sharing.
Great to see collection of turf. Still remember my friends Adrean and Connor was saying about the bog and turf cutting (county mayo) on weekends and saying about the body pain after that. Informative.
Thank you for this! Big mood improver.
6:50 they dabbed before it was cool.

Watched this in the 1970's whilst on holiday at my uncle's place in Kerry. Lovely summers. But it wasn't a tourist attraction. It was real life.

There is no better fragrance on God's earth that of a traditional peat fire...As an American, I delighted in rolling into a small Irish town and being greeted by the intoxicating and heavenly aroma wafting thru the nostrils... pity we can't get the real thing here...those briquettes they sell are just not the same...
Very interesting and informational video. Thanks for posting...
I remember working on the bog in the late sixties. it was a joy to meet up with the local people, have a chat about issues of the day, come together for tea prepared on site and enjoy beautiful home made sandwiches as the summer sun shone down. I would consider it a special holiday to relive those times again. I am so happy to have been part of the old Ireland that is no more.
Very interesting.
Well done good video.
Beautiful thatched roof
Very interesting watch, thanks
Very enjoyable video.

Thank you !
Prior to the really hot period of weather in late June 2018, we had the turf drying for three weeks. During the hot week, we turned (80 yards) the turf on Sunday and the following Saturday (6 days) we had the turf in, bone dry: almost too dry but great heat from it. In twenty years it was the only time that we had any comfort saving turf. Last year (2019) we had to take the turf home not fully saved. It didn't fully dry inside. It's very hard to start and not great heat. In recent times, it is becoming increasingly hard to save the turf.
Nice peat fire
Most young people today dont know what hard work is..
wish you had a video showing them making a thatched roof completely.
We cut peats down the way with tuskers which is much easier than across like this in Shetland Islands
You have to thatch with the reed a certain way because of the water, true
I like these videos..F:-india 🇮🇳
I found your video mate, really love the content. Subscribed straight away, We should connect!
that was interesting.
My ancestors are from Ireland Scotland Wales and England
I’m 37 and was in the bog in 1994 cutting and turning the turf too hahahah hod we hated it
Winter's Ocean wind in United kingdom was very cold temperature - 15 C. We need coal & peat & pellets fuel & briquettes biocoal burning to get warm without limited.
how do you find the terf?
Is this a blanket bog or a raised bog?
Imagine! We were an industrious species. And actually used our intelligence.. coupled with manual technique and labour.
Sadly now.. all of it is dwindling
And you got a big x from me
If you own a piece of land, you can build wherever you want.
Isn't that right/
@readyforthebattle: It is not spanking; it is stanking, also called breasting. The other method is dabbing or underfooting.
Karak Roshin
Maybe they call it spanking as you’d be sure to get a good spanking if dad couldn’t find your ass when it was time to harvest the peat?
Could also call it a Peat Gun!
Peat & Biofuels pellets fuel briquettes biocoal & coal was very stable getting warming in winter, which was unlimited. Weather was limited electricity generation on wind energy and solar panels, which was very unstable. Winter in United kingdom very cold. We need warming. Many people were death as cold weather. Wind energy and solar panels are poor energy to electricity generation.
In asia Peat moss Expensive.
As a beekeeper I`m very disappointed by the locals who destroied tens of hectars of heather around my apiary due to the turf cutting. My neighbour allways have tons of turf in his shed, no matter what the season is... Human greed is endless :((( And I need to feed my bees by the sugar with the goverment raised tax on it, from now on :((((((( I`m getting mad and desperate, seen so much desperate madness around...
:O :)
WHO NEEDS TO CUT TREES
turf is not fosil but decaying matter.
Ha Ha Spanking the turf
Now we know where the dabbing epidemic comes from!
peat becomes coal..eventually
aka not sustainable
Better than freezing and eating uncooked food, though, huh?
Wouter d.B. Human life isn’t sustainable. People know this already, on some level, but there’s this total denial that sets in to self-protect. Human life is just not sustainable.
It's the ratio of human life to planetary assets. We'll die off to manageable numbers eventually...
Dab on them haters.

Zzz. Dr
I can't believe people in the UK actually eat that stuff
Great video. Thank you for sharing
