What type of paint did you use to stencil and I'm going to be stenciling on fabric should I use fabric paint and if so do I need to add medium to it

Wow - thanks for this - a total lifesaver! I was ready to give up on stencils. I had MUCH better luck with the second method by the way -

I am here because I am trying to prevent bleeding when applying a stencil over already stained wood. I need to keep the paint through the stencil sharp without any bleeding and when removing the stencil I need to make sure any of the prestained surfaces don't get peeled up or damaged from any left over residue. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I was interested in painting with stencils after looking at a book called The Painted Bathroom by Henny Donovan. They used mylar to make stencils. But I was trying to find my other book on paint that showed various ways to texture your walls. Make some more videos, I find craft videos interesting.

Why not just use mod podge to seal it in?

Do vinyl decals work on art canvases?

Kate Dupre So sorry I had some hardships and wasn’t being present. Yes you can use it on canvas but vinyl just doesn’t stick very well on it. You will have to be patient getting the vinyl on the canvas.

how do you stop bleeding on stained wood? I tried applying mod podge and let it dry, then applied paint an let it semi dry and the paint piled off the wood in areas?

I would use paint that is less glossy using flat/matte acrylic paint is best. The Satin, semi-gloss, gloss all end up creating a film like texture and can be peeled off. I would completely skip the mod podge and just use light layers of paint to prevent the paint bleeding under.

After you lay your vinyl down, brush a thin layer of polycrylic over the letters, let it dry for a few minutes then paint and let it dry. Hope this helps! :) Mod podge never worked for me either!

I agree with Emmalee, but after polycrylic has dried, light sand over stencil with 320 grit to remove thick build up around the edges. Build up of polycrylic around edges will cause paint to peel off, espically if your board is stained
