Mike, we absolutely need another whole video of you guys operating. Just straight video of you pounding out qsos and talking about running your rig. Fantastic stuff. 73 Paul KC0HST
Yes the CCC was a stop gap solution to put a whole lost generation to work, and for a useful cause. To build out or precious recreational areas, and state and national parks; but they did so much more.
The series starts with designing the system then building it. This is the last - well I do go out one final time to make sure that I spot correctly on POTA. But basically this is a last in the series.
Great work/play! Actually great play! I got up, saw you had a new vid, watched it, then went for the key.... nobody. Well, it's almost 11. 40's folded by now. I KNEW I shouldn't have slept in! GB es 73 W3IHM
👍Excellent Mike, thanks for sharing. Well done achieving a POTA activation with period equipment. CCC info very interesting. Grandpa doesn't need sidetone 😂.
What a beautiful set up. Its fantastic to see someone operating historical transmitters/recievers. Very interesting gear to say the least. Awesome history lesson, My Father enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1933 and was honorably discharged in 1945, Dad was a Radio operator, first class Chief petty officer and was also an avid amateur extra class ham, awesome stories dad had. Thank you for sharing this, I enjoyed the lesson.
Great series on the project. You have super Fall weather there. I have been building an RF pickup to trigger a small audio oscillator for use in monitoring my old separate TX and RX. Got sidetracked with my 1929 Hartley oscillator build. I can see that I will need it. Thanks for your channel. Sam AE4GX Aiken SC
The little monitor circuit from VK3YE is first principles. A diode detector turns on an NPN transistor that activate a PNP tp fire up a 555 Timer oscillator. Something must have come loose.
Again, Great Work! I've learned a lot about vacuum tube technology and antennas with this series . The history of the CCC was an educational bonus. Thank You!
Verry Cool, I love this old tube stuff. I have lots of tube Gear but nothing for "portable" . just a 705 for POTA. Been watching your video's for a long time. I have a 803 that I would like to make into something. again take this setup out many times VERY COOL and good luck
So cool you pulled this off, Mike. Big fun! What was your method to launch the antenna up into the trees? That would have been fun to watch, especially sped up. Loved the CCC story, too. Notice how fit and healthy those young men looked? No junk food back then. We have remnants of CCC activity around the Puget Sound but a lot of it has rotted away since I was a boy.
Great Effort! Great Historical Information. I'd like to know more about the Regen sending monitor project. I'm planning on building your R-29 Regenerative Receiver.
@@MIKROWAVE1 Ground wave, with all the power you were running. 🙂 You were down in the mud at times but readable. I did get a quick recording on my phone.
Super neat seeing how it was done in the past. That equipment is crude, but beautiful. There's innate beauty in its simplicity and robustness, yet utter effectiveness in establishing long range comms (not to mention just how gorgeous black wrinkle and bakelite is). Was looking at your keying of the J-38, and was wondering, do you always use a straight key with such a large contact gap? In this instance, I suppose it would help make the clicks louder, what not having a sidetone and all. I'm a student of straight keying form and technique. All the learning I've received on the topic tells me to NOT do it the way you do, but clearly it works for you. Do you fatigue quickly keying that way? Not criticizing at all, just curious. Keep up the cool projects. I could watch these radio archaeology videos all day long.
Heroic op without sidetone Mike. FB. I don't think I could do it. I once used the changing transformer hum on a DX-100 for sidetone! CCC built Skyline drive in the Shenandoah. Very FB. Bill N2CQR
On the one hand I like CW on the other hand this is also short, you give each other an S report and it is almost done, that is I think why I am more of a pirate, a piece of music, a chat, a piece of music and another chat friendly greetings end of QSO. POTA is a competition that gives folks little awards. Yes it is just a manufactured thing. But it has caused more activity and excitement for those who are not ragchewers.
I looked for you on the Reverse Beacon Network this morning, you were heard as far as 539 miles away in Ohio. Have you ever taken your PARASET portable?
@@MIKROWAVE1 Some jerk of a ham said 72 is I owe you one making it 73. I made 30 QRP contacts in the last 2 days and didn't sound like an ass saying 72. As far as "72" are you always monkey see, monkey do?
Fantastic video Mike. Love the history lesson and POTA follow-up. Radio as it was in the 30s 😊

Done - this week.
Great Job! It caprures the joy and excitement of portable operation. 73 de K4TO
The weather did not hurt!
Congratulations Mike, well put together sherries on a vintage transmitter with final in an historic setting.
Thanks for the video. I've never heard of the CCC until this video. Very interesting! I enjoy your take on history.

This is phenomenal!!!
👍Thank you sir.
Now THAT is how you POTA! A wonderful project and FB video.
Well I have a guest op who wants to help me do it again This Thursday Afternoon, this time actually spotting correctly!
Brilliant work
Wow! Great job, Mike. And thanks for the C.C.C. history lesson. That was a bonus.

Glad you enjoyed it Paul!
What an entertaining video! I’m very glad that a club member shared it with me.

Tomorrow same Bat Time.
This is so cool, thank you for the time and effort for this project
Now that is a stylish way to do POTA!
Wish it worked the other way. If you do not reply to a station within 100Hz, you are not heard. Hard to do with crystals!
Good show! Whatever it takes to get this old kit running, it won't suffer from, 'wrong version of software'! I like it!
But it can be a challenge as you will see in this weeks video where I introduce two hams to the gear and let them try.
👍Excellent Mike, thanks for sharing. Well done achieving a POTA activation with period equipment. CCC info very interesting. Grandpa doesn't need sidetone 😂.
Well grandpa got sidetone for the two hams who use it in this weeks video.

The regen is tricky and I no doubt missed a few. Plus I never spotted correctly. This weeks video shows another try.

I'm trying again tomorrow, this time spotting on POTA properly.
Great job Mike.

I was something all right. If you followed the series, there were no guarantees. Glad it worked!

Heard you here in northwest Vermont about a 339. Unfortunately I only have a receiver at work or I'd given you a call. Good job!
The antenna was oriented broadside SW and it was a bit too high for NVIS. I'm amazed you heard me!

No - I was horrified as it was loose and getting gapppppppeir as I keyed!
Fantastic!!!!!
When the audio gets distorted, that is when the regen is putting out too much audio for the LM380 Speaker Amplifier.
Great job on this wonderful series! I appreciate all of your efforts. 72- W1RMD

POTA is a competition that gives folks little awards. Yes it is just a manufactured thing. But it has caused more activity and excitement for those who are not ragchewers.
Mary Anne Hartley invented the Hartley oscillator, and Brad Pitt inverted the Colpitts oscillator.
John Williams, the Conductor? Warren Zevon invented the Zever Diode.

I actually used it Sunday night on the OMRN cw edition at 830 ET. I took it to a site in NC I was working at, and it did fine.
You said the magic word. POTA Now you are banned forever !

Jolly Good. I think you have to cheat a bit and 'pre-spot' yourself on the pota app. Also you don't appear to have been on the air that long. G7VFY
It was even simpler than that. The POLO App can do it. You do not even have to leave the app. I just did not PUSH THE BUTTON.
Have fun
