Not sad, more so disappointed because I felt like with the incoming players and future looking bright, that we were building towards something. If a player or coach doesnt want to be with us then I will open the door.I feel like things are moving in a positive direction to eventually launch us towards annual playoff appearances and competivness versus the curb stomping we have received in recent appearances. Rees took the best opportunity for him and will definitely gain experience for his young career, good luck to him.
Tommy's offenses have been known to either come up flat, almost collapse, and sometimes collapse in the second half. FSU, Oklahoma State in 2021, Marshall, BYU, Stanford, and Navy this past season.
As a die hard Irish fan I understand that it's a business. Props to Reese for trying to boost up his resume so best of luck at Alabama. A new start is needed at the OC in order to get to elite levels. Let's Go Fighting Irish!☘☘☘
I could be wrong but I still feel that in the back of Reese mind he wanted that job but Freeman got it. And say what you will or may that little seed inward keeps you from flourishing outside . 🤔
Great perspective John! I agree. First, and let me be crystal clear because I've read this and heard people say that it was definitely not about the money. Apparently ND would have matched the Bama offer if TR wanted to stay. I think it's about a new environment to be in. Learning from Saban and adding to his resume for the future. 🍀
Change is not always bad. I have a honest question? What has Tommy Rees actually done in all serious. His quartback recruiting and quartback development has been horrible. So honestly what has he done. Not sour grapes just a honest question.
How do I feel about it? Best thing to happen to ND in 10 years.. Finally we have a chance to upgrade this position instead of paying 2 million a year to a little boy learning on the job.. Bama can win with a lamp post as their OC so Tommy makes no difference to Bama's ability to win..
The guy could frustrate the hell outta me, but I was actually looking forward to seeing him w/this year's roster. I guess I just find the timing is interesting. I don't know why the guy didn't want to see things thru at least this season, but his motivations are what they are. Anyway, there are some great OC's at other schools that would relish the chance to come to ND and take the reins. I trust that Marcus & crew will identify the best fit, make the offer & get the new guy in asap so he can get rollin'
@@Romenet310 For me, it frustrated the hell out of me that Tommy let Audric Estime (Jerome Bettis, Part 2) warm the bench while Rees was constantly was trying to make a power back out of Chris Tyree, who wasn't built for it. I also couldn't understand how Tommy didn't even have a passing acquaintance with running a slant to offset a pass rush. He did some things well and some things that caused the fans to pull their hair out. He also was not great at developing quarterbacks.
@@Romenet310 There were guys on the sidelines who, IMO, should have been on the field...guys talented enough where you just have to find ways to utilize them. Alabama, Georgia,Ohio state and Notre Dame so stop bullying your way around the comments and go back to your basement. Plus it would be cheating for Saben to reach out to players that are already in the program but I simply forget, you guys are use to cheating
I think you are being a bit harsh. As a player he was the best back up QB in ND history. During the 2012 undefeated regular season, he won a couple important games in relief. As the OC he had multiple top 10 teams and one playoff. Give him a little respect.
Regardless of how one might view Tommy Rees, his departure represents a major disruption in continuity. Alabama will go into 2023 with a new OC, a new DC, and an inexperienced QB; Georgia will go into the season with an inexperienced QB, as will Ohio State. Notre Dame's continuity going into 2023 is one of the things that advantage them over potential playoff teams. Regarding the possibility of Buchner leaving - sure he hasn't achieved anything yet - but he has shown his capabilities. If we lose him we lose the opportunity to have an elite QB room in 2023. Buchner coming off the bench to a Heisman candidate, with a five star freshman to boot.
This hire just shit in the face of everyone claiming that Tommy Rees can't call a game. I think it's validation that Notre Dame has been making the right moves. Alabama OC job is one step away from a college HC position or NFL OC position, which is where Rees wants to go. Hiring coaches who are able to move on to better things is a proven way to be able to hire good coaches.
The only thing Saban dictates is terminology. Look at every different OC he has. Also he will get on them when they call stupid plays. Saban is a master and doesn’t put up with mediocrity.
I've said it before ill say it again. I'm a rees fan both player and coach. I think about the timing of this to happen with the way the receiver position is coming together mixed with the oline te's rb's hartman etc... But this was a must career move for Tommy! Arguably the best coordinator position in the sport! With all that said, i think this was a brilliant hire by Saban. Think about it... They lose Bryce Young, so what does Saban do, bring in a guy to run that duo, guy is a genius! Six coordinators in 8 years and he always picks them to fit the next seasons team strengths. Bama will run the football next year and run it well. He could not of past up coaching under Saban. and i'm sure this decision is eating at him for everything i mentioned. He'll be one of the youngest head coaches in college football in 2-3 years. Give em hell down there Tom especially your protege. On the flip side of all of this.... 1. Excited to see what OC we'll get our hands on. 2. Excited to see Tommy beat up on Kellys Tigers. 3. The chances ND has to see familiar faces in the playoffs. I'll end this with a question for all, including you John. Who has the better offense next season ND LSU OR ALABAMA?
I’m upset and disappointed. His statements after making his decision to not go to lsu piss me off and I really wanted to see what he could do the next two years.

Take a hike Tommy finally gets his big shot after going senile Saban can't get his 1st choice. For ND fans who are heartbroken about this wipe those tears the future is brighter with Rees gone. Freeman gets to pick an OC of his choosing. He did well with the other coaching choices he'll do well with the next one. Bye bye Turnover Tommy please take Buchner with you. I'd love to watch Alabama with NDs recent offense and qb.
@Uncle Fred bud, we have a way higher blue chip percentage in the last 2 classes than Kelly had except one year, 2013. We are at 70%. Kelley AVERAGED 50% blue chip. We also got rid of an overhyped OC and now Freeman will go get someone who knows what the hell they are doing and how to utilize that talent. ND is on the rise, FINALLY after years of shitty, lazy, uninspired coaching hires.
It’s just a good career move overall. You can tell he has bigger dreams other than coaching at ND. You can’t do anything but respect it.
Wonderful news!
Glad to see him go!!!+

He made a great move for his career. We will be fine, have all the belief in Marcus Freeman. I wanted to see if Tommy improved. He now had talent.
Who do have in mind as a good option to be the new ND OC?. Anyone in mind for the position?. Great show.

I’m sad that Rees a Notre Dame grad thinks somewhere else (Alabama?!) is better than Notre Dame. He’ll be replaced with someone better.
I'm personally stoked. I sure hope Freeman gives Andy Ludwig of Utah strong consideration. He's my choice to replace Tommy.
