To my knowledge the paratrooper knives that feature this method of opening don’t date from WWII, the US used a schrade brand switchblade and the Germans used a gravity knife from Solingen.
If you look at history you’ll notice they’re are far scarier secret societies than free masons. They’re very accessible to the public and their innermost beliefs have been known to the public for a long time, if you really looked into it or have met masons in real life you’ll know these guys aren’t a big deal especially compared to the skull and bones for example
I have that same knife. It's more of a letter opener. And the gears will get stuck every so often and the pins holding the gears in will break on you if you use it too much. Still fun to tinker with though.

OTFs, balis, and gravity knives are all cool, but that opening mechanism is just so cool (even if it is impractical) also eventually want a cold steel triple action because they are awesome

That is awesome i bought my brother on like 10 years ago when smith and Wesson made them and he lived it when wearing winter gloves but i did not buy one for myself and i always regreted it, the historic style ones end up with a small handle but that s&w knife was like this where the handle liner and scales stay the same length you end up with a really long handle compared to the blade

This knife would be too easy to drop when hanging from a tree. So they disigned a knife that could be opened with one hand so you always have a secure grip on it. Calling the pantograph a paratroopers knife was a marketing gimmic from American retailers. Now about the disign of this knife, why is it so weird? Well because German knife laws have always Been weird. In germany its illegal to carry a folding knife that can be opened with one hand. This was disigned to be as complicated as possible to stay legal.
