  • The clock was ticking down on the title hopes for the Wayzata boys soccer team. The Trojans trailed Woodbury 2-1 with less than two minutes remaining in the state class AAA championship game before their pressure paid off. Defender Joey Burica, who moved up front to add offense, buried a rebound with 1:42 left in regulation to send the game to overtime. That’s where the Trojans won it. Jackson Widman made a run up the left side and slipped a pass to Joe Highfield all alone at the top of the box. Highfield’s shot was blocked by the Royals’ goalkeeper with a foot save but it caromed off a defender and in for the winning goal for Highfield in a 3-2 Wayzata victory. It’s the fourth state championship in Wayzata boys soccer history. They also won in 1985, 2005, and 2017.
