Let's dive in and get started with your foam piece! This step doesn't require any cutting or shaping of the foam. To kick things off, Lorie is trimming her tulip quite short and positioning it at the very base of the foam to form the tip of the carrot. This is an excellent starting point for shaping. Simply apply hot glue to attach your first carrot at the bottom of the foam piece. Lorie has kept her tulip stem around five inches, but feel free to adjust the length to achieve your desired look.
Next, cut your tulips to various lengths and start hot gluing them in place, making sure to shape them as you go! Some stems should be shorter, while others can be longer. In Lorie's tutorial, she retains some greenery on her stems to add texture and fullness to the carrot, but be careful not to overdo it. As you shape, remember to widen the design as you work towards yourself.
Once all your tulips are glued in, it’s time to add the greenery. Typically, Lorie would trim these down, but this particular greenery was perfect for the project, so no prep work is needed. Simply insert it into the foam at the top of the carrot and secure it with hot glue for extra hold. After it dries, feel free to fluff and adjust the greenery to your liking.
You may notice a small gap between the carrots and tulips; this is ideal for placing your bow. Lorie handmade all her bows, but you can certainly use a bow maker if you prefer. For her bow, she begins with a base of white glitter mini leaf ribbon, layers with orange polka dots, and finishes with carrot-themed ribbon. If you'd like to see Lorie's technique in action, we have a video tutorial available on our RUclips channel. Secure your bow with either a zip tie or a chenille stem, and use hot glue or a floral pick to keep it in place.
Soon, you'll have an adorable tulip carrot swag that you can proudly showcase for Easter-or, if you're a crafter, perhaps even sell! All materials and supplies from TMI Gifts come to approximately $47.00.
