After almost 2 years i can say this is the toughest hobby. There is no room for error.
I would disagree , there is lot of room for error and this hobby teaches you to learn from your mistakes.
Nothing goes wrong in a tank in a single day , there are clear indications about what is going wrong in a planted tank . We need to be observant and gain knowledge to rectify the issues and get the tank to balanced state
For example , if there is excess ammonia then fishes behaviour will change , if there is excess nutrients then certain type of algaes will start taking over , if there is excess light , different type of algaes will start taking over.
I believe we need to be patient and observant if we are serious in this hobby
every thing in life is tough, and human to error, yet simple understanding of nature and a bit of common sense makes this hobby the best and most enjoyable
And if you are doing it correctly, it's costly too..... And lot of maintenance
It looks deceptively easy, but it demands a lot of attention to detail- and to be honest that is what makes it fun!!
Had it not been so - may be - so many ppl would mot have been hooked to this.

Md fish tanks has been an inspiratiom to me , being an indian and a student he gives such a budget friendlu options to hobbyists , he never says not to do water change , he tells do what is best for you , and morover my 60cm planted tank is flourshing from 2 years now w all fish healthy and plants growing , i use a internal filter and a flood light and i do 20 perceng water change like once in a month
I would recommend everyone to watch md fish tanks he knows his hobby.

Hi,I am from Nairobi Kenya.
I am a very good fan of yours.
I have a 10 ft x 2.5ft x 2 ft tank which is filtered by a 5 ft x 1.5ft x 1.5 ft sump. The sump is divided into 3 compartments. The first compartment has a sponge under which I have put coral stones. In the second compartment, it is filled up with lots of bioball ceramic rings and lots and lots of plants and in the third compartment we have the sump and some coral stones.
I have 24 frontosas, 9 altolamprologus compresicceps and 9 leptosoma in the tank.
I used to feed the above fish once a day, but after realising the problem, I decided to feed once after every 2 days.
Now here's my problem....
My ph is 8
My ammonia is 0 ppm
My nitrite is 0ppm
My nitrate is always between 40 and 80.
One of the ways to reduce the nitrate is to do a water change.
Altolamprologus compresicceps are very sensitive to water changes. Whenever I do a water change, one or two die.
IN SHOT, MY NITRATE IS NOT GOING DOWN DESPITE THE PRESENCE OF LOTS OF PLANTS. WHY ARE THE PLANTS NOT CONSUMING THE NITRATE.
Your advice on the above situation will be greatly appreciated.

Not all plant ☘️🌵 consume equal nitrites... use more plants, better plants, Better Filter or multiple Filters. Reduce feed,reduce Fish 🐟 🐠 load, fewer fish
In the End 🔚 of 🚫 nothing work then Change Water

I really think you are correct...not all plants take up nitrate.
I guess had planted wrong plants in the sump...
1.Spider plants.
2. Peace lily.
3. Monsteria
4. Money plant.
About half an hour,I removed all the plants.
I noticed that about quarter stamp of the Monsteria was actually rotten. Maybe that would be the cause of the nitrate spike. Maybe, I honestly don't know.
So,after removing all the plants, I have decided to let the money plants and added some duckweed.
I honestly feel the choice of my plants was wrong.
I will go ahead and add some more money plants.
Now,as far as the water change is concerned, whenever I do it , 1 or 2 altolamprologus compresicceps die, since they are very sensitive to water condition.
Let's see what goes on,I'll try and keep you updated.

Your problem is the coral in the sump, remove it and you will see that the problem will be solved, better to use an effective bio media

I have removed ninety percent of the coral stones, I have added hornworth,added more duckweed.
I mean this is the best I could do.

I'm a big fan of MD Fish Tanks and have been following him since 3 years, his videos are NOT clickbait for sure. He is one of the best (for me) nature style aquascaper and he keeps his videos transparent. I'm following you too since 2 years sir and I love your videos and knowledge that you share. Also, I've Malawi Cichlids tank and it's been 6 months that I didn't change the water. The water is crystal clear and I've had no fish loss at all. They're healthy and very happy. Just that I keep the filter (I'm using big hang on back filter) clean and also do the top up. That's all I do and no other maintenance.
Point here is i have not mentioned any youtuber's name here so you are assuming,

I was waiting for this topic. I follow your channel and like every content. Same way I follow 'Father fish' channel. He always say no water change but the condition is planted tank with sand as substrate. He also say to add decaying leaves from river stream to add beneficial microorganisms
I have the Planted tank setup this way and no water change from last 1.5 yrs. Only top up the evaporated water. Excellent ecosystem I must say.
My point is to understand what he is saying fully and that is what is important
I also follow father fish, he will help you understand the biology and chemistry of your tank
Our hobby now a days is going downhill with this no water change - no co2 - no ferts policies.......had been in hobby since 2010, till date all my planted tanks gets pressurized CO2, weekly water chang and proper fertilizers .........thanks sir for bringing this video.....

I totally agree with you. Half knowledge is dangerous. Every tank is different. I have a 130ltr planted tank where I have not done water change for the past 6 months. I do top up Every 3-4days. It's a Walstad system with a filter.

I do agree with you in 90% of cases. In our Indian subcontinent biggest bane is the temperature, if the temperature is subtropical stays well below 26deg I think its a possibility to maintain a zero maintenance no filter tank. With lower temperature fish and plant metabolism is slow, plants have an upper hand over algae and thrive.
I've had several unintentional setups like that over the years. There are 2-3 60liter tubs in my backyard under shade of trees with a dense growth of egeria and floating plants, lilies, etc, these setups are my endless supplies for shrimps and guppies, like each one has 100s of them. That is without filter and water is only topped after evaporation.
I also had another tank recently, right under direct sunlight(again unintentional) had no room for this tank so put it out before 2021 winter. It had a few algae issues initially but the tank settled in smooth, it had a dozen melon barbs and eventually by the end of winter the tank had a full dense carpet plus jungle of HM. It was so thick that melon barbs completely disappeared in the thicket. Never seen such hm growth even in my high maintenance co2 setups. But this setup was fine till march of 22, and later it started growing all sorts of algae as temperature rose and I pulled it off. I fed this tank literally once or twice a week as fishes were being fed by bugs and mosquito larvae and had their bellies almost full all the time. There was no filter and water was only topped once two weeks or so...
So, it can be fairly said that its good for beginners to avoid such clickbaits as its a tricky unpredictable thing, but with experience and right conditions(which is tricky) its quite possible.

Please make a video telling what the hobbyist were doing in olden days for this hobby, relating to all the aspects of this hobby i.e. water change, good bacteria, fish food, removing chlorine, maintaining temperature and all that is related to this hobby as I know you are in this hobby since your child hood and at that time there were no such equipment’s as they are today. Why I wanted to know is because it may be helpful and interesting for some one like me to know the evolution of this hobby. I assure you that even if video becomes too lengthy I will watch the full video till end or make it in parts as you think best.

what I learn from this video is we should change the water specially if fake plants are there, secondly it depends on your tank size, when to change and how much to change, like my tank is little bigger so I still need to change it after 1 week, for a smaller tank means more mess so may be 2 times per week, and the water change should be 20% atleast not like 50% until there is an emergency (like fish death,its foul smell or any other infection spreading in the aquarium), may b my concept is wrong but this is what I learn from this video, one can slowly and gradually gain experience, it doesn't comes within night, hats off to sir for beautiful explanation and the water temperature must match the temperature of your aquarium, otherwise your fish are again going to be shocked, the same things happened to me. Hope I could save the fish from dying by following these tips

I have watched some of his videos and i believe he says and does what is correct for his country and situation, yet most of that may not apply for Indian conditions

He has grown a thick carpet of hairgrass and other plants without CO2 which tells about his water parameters

1 goldfish died after bullying by new fishes
After testing water by testing kit if ammonia or nitrite is low or high what to in that case . Or any other component comes low or high
Then try to understand why and reduce or increase as required by your aquarium or fish

is it required to clean fish detritus like poop, pee, food residues, etc in a well planted or heavily planted aquariums with soil in it? if yes, how often? because in terrestrial ecosystem faecal matters get decomposed and used by plants. well, shouldn't it be similar in aquatic ecosystem as well?

after water change regularly my fish started fin and tail rot, I added the conditioner but still water is polluted, so,before adding the water to aquarium, should we keep water in bucket for atleast 24hours after applying water conditioner, may be this solve the harmful bacterial problems, because adding water directly always cause something harmful to my fish, and if i don't change the water, then the ammonia build up occurs, so confused now that what should I do with my tap water

If you have a fish only aquarium, 4-5 hours of light during the day is enough for them and other times switch on the light if you wish to get a better lock or keep the light OFF

Ek page hai, FatherFish karke wo kaafi no water change promote karta hai. But I think we are inexperienced or moderately experienced and cannot manage no water change.
He uses pure walstad method. Have you read Walstads book Ecology of planted aquarium ? this techniques are very old when there was no filter available. if you upgrade some points of walstad method i think we can make good low tech tank in low budget. and according to me the tanks father fish makes are ecologically balanced but not as beautiful as an method aquascape.
As Mayur sir mentioned, watching detail video and understanding is important.
If you see Father fish's shop, he has setup his tanks such way.
I have one planted tank setup his way and no water change from last 1.5 yrs... Only top up evaporated water. Plants are growing healthy, shrimps are breading and fishes are happy. What else we need:)

Sir what about the filter? as you said water change depends on aquarium so mine one is decorated with fake plants so there no natural recycling, should we clean the filter like after 2 days or can we wait for at least 1 week to clean it because I have read that filter also contain beneficial bacteria, will cleaning filter after 2 days destroys the good bacteria or not?

No for complete water change. Important is to watch Mayur Sir's videos on new tank setup, beginner setup. And most importantly Tank cycling or nitrogen cycle videos.
For now, do a partially 20-30% water changes alternate days... And reduce the feeding by half.
Do this for atleast a week.
Also make sure filter is running 24x7.

No water change, no filter is perfectly possible for Walstad tanks. I have done this multiple times even kept Shrimp. I would go without water change for months. It's all about the balance, and the method, not all methods are same. Each method has a principle to work properly. Thanks
