National Child Day message from Ontario Ombudsman Paul Dubé:
Hello, I’m Ontario Ombudsman Paul Dubé.
Every year, on November 20, my team and I participate in the celebration of National Child Day.
What is National Child Day?
It’s a day to raise awareness and promote the rights of all children and youth.
Young people have many rights, like those in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, which Canada ratified in 1991.
Here in Ontario, the rights of young people receiving certain government services are in the Child, Youth and Family Services Act.
This involves recognizing that young people
-have a voice that must be listened to;
-have basic needs that must be met;
-and have rights that must be protected.
And enables them to be active decision-makers in their own lives.
My Office works to do just that. We work to ensure the provincial government, and service providers giving care to young people, respect the rights that they have under the law.
My Office recognizes National Child Day to let everyone know that children and youth can turn to us for help. If they have a concern and feel like their rights are not being met or respected, we are here to help.
