After UN vote: What a remembrance day for the Srebrenica genocide means | DW News

- The UN General Assembly has voted to establish an annual day to commemorate the Srebrenica genocide.
It has made July 11 the International Day of Remembrance of the Srebrenica Genocide, putting the crime on par with the Holocaust and the Rwandan genocide. On this day in 1995, the Bosnian Serb forces captured Srebrenica and over the following days, massacred eight thousand unarmed Bosnian Muslim men and teenagers.
The resolution has been adopted despite fierce opposition from Bosnian Serbs and Serbian leadership. Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic is at the United Nations. Ahead of the vote, he said the measure would deepen divisions in the region.
For the latest on this we are joined by DW Washington bureau chief Ines Pohl at the UN headquarters in New York and DW reporter Aida Salihbegović is in Bosnia and Herzegovina, in the city of Mostar.

Germany a genocide expert
Exactly, they know a genocide when they see it
So was is from them that Serbia learned?
@@soundscape26Also, by Croats in Jasenovac.
@@soundscape26an American is talking…..
@@soundscape26 Good question, not sure if they learned from Ottoman Empire or Third Reich, probably Americans (NATO)? According to the first estimates presented at the Paris Peace Conference of 1919, total Serbian casualties in the first world war were 1,250,000; and population was 4.6 millions. That was world genocide record of all times; 27% of the entire population killed, some historians say more - a third. Germans killed again more than a million Serbs in second world war. Meanwhile Serbia's neighbors were all fascists states that killed more Serbs than German fascists themselves.
Germany is lecturing somebody about genocide, them who killed millions of people...
Yes and they apologized for it, unlike
Serbia who still refuses to.
Accept the fact and move on, you cant hide from the truth
And why should the current generations pay for that? Germany has apologised for that countless times.
They should still still seat silently, and let other do the talking, they don't have moral ground. They should seat silently for another 200 years, that how big their genocide was. Apology wont unmake it.

@@ararune3734 Oh I am fully aware of Serbia's denial. That's a problem. Germany on the other hand is not in denial of what happened in the past.
I would argue that Germany is so deep down in the apology rabbit hole that it ends up making mistakes by trying to apologize for its past, blinded by the past to what is currently happening in the world.
Serbia on the other hand tries to play the victim. Claiming that they were attacked, when anyone with access to a google search knows what happened to the UN peacekeepers who were sent to protect the very people who the Serbian government made "disappear". It is a completely political resolution, as the results of the vote tell you, there were more against and abstentions, and whoever followed the session knows that everyone who came forward to speak saied that it is a political resolution.
Now that Pandora's box has been opened, my question is, when will we see a resolution on the genocide of the Germans against the Serbs in the First World War when 28% of the population of Serbia was killed by them?
Or a resolution on the genocide of the Serbs in the same Bosnia and Croatia where 720,000 Serbs were killed, or a resolution on the genocide of the Germans on For the Serbs during the Second World War, where the law "Shoot 50 Serbs for one wounded German, and 100 for one killed" was in effect, where children were taken out of school and from prisons, that's what concerns Serbia as well.
And can we also see a resolution on the genocide of the Indians by the USA or the genocide in the Congo by Belgium, or the genocide in Indonesia by the Dutch, or say 150 resolutions against the colonial genocides committed by the British and French?
Nobody says it is impossible to table and adopt any such resolutions. It would be interesting to see how the world assesses these historical events. Excavations in the area have come up with just a fraction of the 8,000 figure and many of those had died in combat, not by execution. Germany saying something….can’t be a bigger hypocrite than that.
The real truth (that is, if my comment doesn't get censored, since lies are usually preferred): Srebrenica was a military base from which attacks were launched on Serbian villages. Bosniak extremists tortured and killed at least 4000 Serbian kids, elderly and women in the villages around Srebrenica (just google Kravica massacre or Bratunac massacre). When the Serbs captured Srebrenica they killed these butchers and let Bosniak women, children and the elderly go. There were fewer than 5000 deats, and all were men, many of whom were war criminals as I described before. Following the end of the war the Bosniaks systematically inflated the number of deats by bringing bodies from the battlefield and putting tomb stones on empty graves - that is how they come up with this number of 8700+ victims. I personally know a couple of people who are very much alive and working in Germany and Austria who have their graves in Srebrenica.

Infact if people in Serbia had some political capability they should counter sue like 120 countries for their war crimes in the past and demand reparations, starting with Great Britain, France and Germany. 😂
“Lets remember Serbia so you stop talking about Gaza”
All good and normal people in this world should be able to understand what happened here.
Serbia does not deny the genocide. President Vučić himself has visited the memorial to it in Srebrenica to pay respect to the victims, and Serbia has donated buildings for schooling and other public good to the territory. Serbia is also the country which made most of the arrests of the perpetrators of the war crime, including the commanders responsible, and delivered them to the Hauge.
This resolution aims not condemn the people responsible, who have already been condemned and have been imprisoned. Its goal is to humiliate Serbia and its people and to push the narrative that Serbia is like those other nations which still deny their crimes.
Vucic need to be in prison

As a Serbian, to other Serbians: It's a logical fallacy to assume that just because Germany did bad things in the past, they cannot condemn others who try or did the same things.
(Quite the contrary - they are very well aware of the bad consequences of such actions!).
I hope one day we Serbs try to be a bit smarter than we are today, and get out of the bubble that we live in right now.
Cheers.
Update: I am not referring or implying anything about Srebrenica, just about the fact that Germany CAN condemn other countries for any bad actions.
Ridiculous that genocide against Armenians and in Jasenovac is not recognised. How about we acknowledge other genocides that occurred.
Agree, like Albanian genocide of 1913, when 120-300 000 Albanians were massacred by war criminal Radomir Putnik.
Serbs again always blame others

No one jailed also
It’s about recognizing the day. This isn’t against all Serbian people anyone can read the draft and see with their own eyes. Those who have done this and ordered this have been arrested and are already in jail. Those who have abstained if you all watched still said that “yes it was a Genocide” however most were afraid that this will cause tensions in the regions and didn’t want to do anything with it. That’s exactly what Serbian president wanted, he wanted to scare everyone when he was saying remarks such as the one that I mentioned. If you don’t believe me just google Milorad Dodik(Serb leader in Bosnia) and you will see how many times he threatened if this passes and he is Vucics puppet. There are petitions in Belgrade from young people who are writing to UN that support the resolution and that they don’t agree with what their president is doing. A lot of this isn’t out in the open. All Serbian people are not genocidal people and that’s not what this is about. It’s only a Remembrance Day and basically talks about that nobody can glorify those who have committed these acts, which today while this was happening a soccer team from Banja Luka (Serbian Entity of Bosnia) were chanting Ratko Mladić name and glorifying him. That’s what need to stop. We all need to live in peace.

When will you convict Naser Oric instead golrifying him?If its not about double standards?

There’s no double standards. Bosnians, croats and Kosovar Albanians protected themselves, Serbia attacked without reason. This is simple to understand, i don’t understand the noisemakers and crybabies. This resolution will help Serbia to face the truth, hopefully apologize for what’s happened and move on.
